Hosting overseas. Goodbye Malaysian hosts

After years of hosting my domains locally, from the cheapest to the best, here's my conclusion.

Enuff lah.

Even suffering clumsy and confusing control panel with evil godaddy is better than hosting with local companies for whatever reasons you may have. I think the belief that it is better to host locally to serve locals (and to support local companies) is nothing but a myth perpetuated by hosting companies themselves.

< Removed as of 2018 . I was harsh in 2011, and I'm sure these hosts could do with local support as well />

ADDENDUM

A few of my clients and friends are now serving from local hosting company and domain resellers ( .my <--- very necessary for local flavor) and VPSes. I've yet to have another hosting account locally but will probably get a few VPSes for smaller projects.

I do have a few domains with local domain resellers and a client on local shared hosting. The level of service & support has been great. Probably due to better cpanel support these days and no more blogspot/wordpress plugins/nulled theme abusers on local blogging scene (good riddance). Pricewise, it's still cheaper to host outside, but I think if you're looking for sub 10ms ping times, local is the way to go.

Hosting question. Where should I host?

I have a few clients website hosted on one of the major hosting company and so far, I'm satisfied with the performance and support.

One of my new client missed out on a promotion (by a day!), thinking the quotation should be valid when they pay later at the end of the month but it turned out the promotion ended a day before and the quotation is no longer valid. I wrote an email on their behalf asking if they could still pay the quoted price but it seems that they don't exactly personalize their email. I got a generic NO reply. I doubt they even realize that they spam me every other week for being a loyal customer .

The new client which printed the quotation with the promotional price is now asking me whether they should opt for another hosting company which is having a promotion now, and their annual price is cheaper.

I'm not concerned with performance of the current host, they've improved and and I've hosted with a few hosts before and their support is definitely slightly better than the others.

But when it comes to pricing, they're a few others offering a much better package.
Security wise, I have yet heard any issue with the current host. I really do not want clients on different hosts since it's a hassle later on (php setting etc)

What my clients need are basically wordpress (for blog), php/mysql, and roundcube ( my current host suspended roundcube sometime this year).

Any advice?

Thanks.
SD Card pins, replaceable?

I've tried recovering photos from my memory card (Kingston 2GB elite pro), but it seems that after recovering 100+ photos, the SD card went dead. It's detectable in Windows Explorer intermittently but never more than a few seconds

A friend who does data recovery told me that any of the 9 pins on the card is replaceable, so anyone with any knowledge on this, please chip in. Thank you in advance.

SD Card pinout
(http://www.technick.net/public/code/cp_dpage.php?aiocp_dp=pinconmem_sdcard_9)

COWON A2

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone has seen the player here in KL.
I'm very impressed from what I've read about it. Can record from any source, longer battery life, the best LCD, excellent audio/video etc. However, it's only available in 30GB which is a minus point.

http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/cowon/a2/

I use Creative ZV which imho is okay for xvid/divx and listening to mp3s but again, it's only 30GB, the battery life is negligible, and Creative hasn't yet release a firmware that truly maximise the player's potential. The player also lose out in most aspects to Cowon A2.

It's available online for around usd320 which is a bit steep for 30GB, but i think it's time someone bring the brand in (if it isn't already) or do a bulk (would be my first).

It's not exactly IPod Killer, but I guess if anything is taking my eyes & my hard-earned $$$ off the 80GB Ipod, it's the Cowon A2. I heard it might be cheaper in Korea too.

so what do audiophiliacs in here say?

To Creative and other brand MP3 player owners

There's a petition started on Creative mp3 players by a guy on Creative forum.

To: Creative Labs company

By this petition, users of Creative's portable media players (Zen Vision series) kindly asks for Creative to either release the firmware as open source code or update firmware for it's products on regular basis, since it's not doing updates as it should. By giving your vote, no matter you own Zen Vision player or not, you can change Creative's attitude towards it's users. By doing that other companies may follow with positive change in products support policy.

Here's the link to the petition.

http://www.petitiononline.com/zvision/petition.html

Let's begin a better products support policy! Stop companies treating the market like a garbage pile for their products. Companies have to to realize that their products support do not end once it's out of their warehouse.

Thank you.
Streamyx disconnects around 2 am

Does anyone else experience this? I normally leave my home pc on when i'm downloading windows update & stuffs (ok..porn), but it seems that in the last one week, it will disconnect around 2 am (when i'm waiting for wc) every night.

Why la?

Is this some kind of bandwidth capping practises they do or something wrong with my modem (ZTE831)?
