Checklist for setting up a home studio

The other day when I attended one of the studio lighting training courses.. this guy was telling me a little about setting up a home studio at home. Here is the 'checklist' he sent to me via email... thought I would share it with everyone.

Q1: What type of photography?
- Different types of photography such as portrait or product photography have different requirements on lighting equipments, probs, background system used.
- First, identify the size of your Shooting Area & selection of lenses

Q2: What Camera Systems to prepare?
- DSLR (full frame), DSLR (APS-H), DSLR (APS-C), Micro Four Third, Point & Shoot
- Lenses
- Different camera types can also affect results
- The cropping factor of DSLR also affect your decision of Shooting Area. This is because a DSLR with APS-C sensor need a larger area for a full body shoot than a Full Frame sensor (given a same focal length's lens)

Q3: What is my Shooting Area size?
- This assists you to decide the type of studio configuration (permenant or temporary)
- Adjust your shooting style to fit the limitation of space (if any)
- Do I have a space at home?

Q4: Hobby or business?
- This directly affects your selection of equipments & allocation of budget

Q5: If business, what type of business arrangement?
- If your client is often around during the shoot, you may want to consider a proper commercial studio than do it at home in which it will affect your own privacy
- It will also affect your selection of equipment & total investment

Q6: What is my budget?
- No matter what is your budget, I strongly advise to set an additional 30% - 50% for your budget aside (there are simply too many unexpected expenses during the setting up process)
- Do not setup a studio with tight cash-flow. With limited of funds, you are most probably not getting what you need. As a result, you are most probably need to compromise your shoot due to the constraint or ops for poor quality equipment.

Studio Photoshooting Event: 5 themes, 5 days, 4 models

The concept is simple - There will be 4 Makeup artists for 4 different model styling each day and 4 new inexperienced models will be presented to photographers for shooting. 4 photographers are limited to each session.

Everyday for 5 days, 4 photographers will take on a photography quest to photograph four (4) fully dressed models in cThree's photography studio in 2 - 2.5 hours. Each model will dress differently and each make up will be unique on its own.

Who should attend?

Photography enthusiasts, amateur photographers, semi-professional photographers (doing this freelance or as a part time) and professional photographers should attend these sessions.

There is a good reason to why we choose inexperienced models, and 1-on-1, photographer to model concept. This teaches photographers how to:

1. Communicate with the model better; or how to direct the model to pose correctly
2. Gain ideas from cThree's creative concepts director, Benjamin Koh
3. Learn the best way to capture a model's angle, without having to try many different angles
4. Properly idealize portrait photography compositions.

Each attending photographer during each session will be personally guided by cThree's creative director.

Why attend this photoshooting?

Shooting time starts from 7.30pm - 9.30pm each day.

How much does it cost?

An affordable price of RM60/photographer for each session only. There are 5 themes and 5 sessions for the entire event, so pick your session accordingly.

Each session requires a minimum of 4 photographers and maximum of 8, so if you have friends who wants to tag along for the whole day, you can book the entire night event at a discounted price.
