Robocop joins Dubai police to fight real crime

DUBAI: A robotic policeman which can help identify wanted criminals and collect evidence has joined Dubai's police force and will patrol busy areas in the city, as part of a government programme aimed at replacing some human crime-fighters with machines.

If the "Robocop" experiment is successful, Dubai Police says it wants the unarmed robots to make up 25% of its patrolling force by 2030.

Clad in the colours of the Dubai Police uniform, the life-size robot, which can shake hands and perform a military salute, is the lighter side of a government plan to use technology to improve services and security ahead of Dubai hosting Expo 2020.

"These kind of robots can work 24/7. They won't ask you for leave, sick leave or maternity leave. It can work around the clock," said Brigadier Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi, director general of the Smart Services Department at Dubai Police.

The first automated policeman in the Middle East, the robot on wheels is equipped with cameras and facial recognition software.

It can compare faces with a police database and flag matches to headquarters. It can read vehicle licence plates and its video feed can help police watch for risks such as unattended bags in popular areas of Dubai, a financial and tourism hub.

Members of the public can also talk to the robot to report a crime or communicate with it using a touch screen computer embedded in its chest. Built by Barcelona-based PAL Robotics, and programmed by Dubai Police, the cost of the robot has not been disclosed.

Most people are not nervous about talking to a robot and some even seem to prefer it, Razooqi said.

"We now see the new generations who are using smart devices - they love to use these kind of tools. A lot of them have seen the Robocop movie and they said: you guys, you have done it." — Reuters

Read more at http://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2...Smc5HtyWiXB8.99

Large venture-backed companies worth nearly $500b

SAN FRANCISCO: The total valuation of late-stage, venture-backed private companies in the United States and Europe has exploded from a few dozen startups worth a collective $40 billion in 2010 to hundreds of firms that together are now worth almost $500 billion, according to a report released Thursday.

The numbers show the magnitude of the recent trend in which the biggest Silicon Valley startups raise hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars from hedge funds, mutual funds and other private investors while delaying their entrance into public markets.

There are now 471 late-stage private companies - defined as firms that have raised at least $75 million through at least three rounds of financing - with an approximate valuation of $490 billion, according to the report from Scenic Advisement, a San Francisco-based investment bank that facilitates secondary stock transactions.

As recently as 2014, there were only 171 such companies collectively valued at $100 billion, according to the report. Late-stage companies include well-known consumer names like Uber Technologies Inc, Airbnb Inc, DropBox Inc, WeWork Companies Inc and Pinterest Inc as well scores of more obscure companies in fields such as cybersecurity, cloud computing and genomics.

Looking specifically at unicorns, which are defined as private companies that carry valuations of more than $1 billion, Scenic Advisement found that there are now more than 100 - up from just six in 2010. The data includes companies in the United States, Europe and Israel, but excludes the many late-stage companies in Asia.

The dramatic growth of high-valued private companies is mainly a consequence of a huge influx of money into what are seen as big opportunities in the tech sector, combined with regulatory changes that have made it easier for companies to stay private longer.

“We’re going to continue to see the majority of the value in private companies accrue while they’re private, not once they are public per the prior tech wave,” said Minal Hasan, general partner of K2 Global, a venture capital firm. “As a result, more money will continue to flow into private tech companies."

Hasan and others note that a lack of liquidity, paucity of financial information and uneven corporate governance at private companies can create a lot of risk. The largest of all the unicorns, Uber, currently faces a string of problems that have called its $68 billion valuation into question.

Yet there are few signs of a slowdown in the private tech markets. Just last month, Japanese tech entrepreneur Masayoshi Son announced he had raised more than $93 billion for the Softbank Vision Fund, making it the largest tech fund in history.

“We may see some moderating of some of the extreme valuations,” said Peter Christiansen, head of research at Scenic Advisement. “But as far as the trends driving this, I don’t see anything on the horizon that would mitigate what’s driven this asset class over the last few years." - Reuters

Read more at http://www.thestar.com.my/business/busines...pKzjcWKfGLJj.99

Germany will only deport Afghan criminals and

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany will now deport to Afghanistan only criminals and people it considers a threat, after a bombing in the Afghan capitol of Kabul killed at least 80 people, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday.

Merkel's government began mass deportations of Afghans in December, after taking in more than a million refugees since the summer of 2015. Human rights groups objected, saying the Afghans were being sent back to a dangerous country.

That argument gained strength after a truck bomb blew up in the diplomatic quarter of Kabul on Wednesday. Among the roughly 350 injured were two German embassy employees. An Afghan security guard at the embassy was killed and the embassy itself was badly damaged.

Merkel said deportations would now be considered case by case. Criminals and those deemed a threat - including people who refuse to reveal their identity - would be sent back. People who want to return to Afghanistan of their own free will be allowed to return.

"The (foreign and interior) ministers aim to submit this new assessment by July at the latest," Merkel told reporters.

Some 3,300 Afghans returned of their own volition last year. Sixty-seven people were deported to Afghanistan last year and more than 100 have been deported so far this year.

(Reporting by Thorsten Severin and Reuters TV; Writing by Paul Carrel; Editing by Larry King)

Read more at http://www.thestar.com.my/news/world/2017/...QWUGRVtLQEs2.99

There are some issues but we are confident that we have a strong scientific basis to show that palm oil is safe, healthy and nutritional,” he said.

MPOB will open a regional office in Tehran by the first quarter of next year, he added.

The Prime Minister expressed Malaysia’s interest in investing in the oil and gas sector, highway construction and automotive industry over there.

Both leaders also agreed to promote travel between their countries, noting that the number of visitors had declined.

Concerning the Muslim world, Najib and Rouhani affirmed co-operation between the two countries to work towards “greater stability and peace” despite belonging to different Islamic schools of thought.

“We both emphasise that Islam, whether Syiah or Sunni, have the same aims and objectives,” Rouhani said.

He said that in the post-sanctions era, there were big amounts of investment flowing into Iran, and that the republic was interested in attracting Malaysian investments.

The Iranian leader was on his first official visit to Malaysia since being elected president in 2013.

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2016...d-and-enhanced/
