(WTA) iPhone Memory Drain

Short version
-iPhone continuously loses memory even when not receiving/downloading or taking photos and auto update off
-delete 200-300mb but will lose all of that a few hours later
-back up, factory setting and then restore becomes 6gb
-had 21k photos/videos but end up with 3k only and now phone have 6gb
-4-5 days later finish my memory already while taking only less than 20 photos

I am using an iPhone 8 64gb and iPhone 11 Pro 64gb. The former is mainly for work which I use WhatsApp for and the latter for photos, social media and surfing the web. With the iPhone 8 I am using it to keep in touch with thousands of my customers so that phone is very crucial.

I am always out of storage. I can have 1gb today and the next morning when I wake up around 100mb where I will struggle to open WhatsApp for work.So I need to spend around an hour deleting and deleting stuffs almost on a daily basis. It is driving me crazy. It never adds up. I calculated all the memory that I am using and I should have at least 5gb free storage but I have none.

So I decided to back up and then update my phone. But in order to update phone I needed 5gb. So I spent days deleting photos and videos both from the camera roll + whatsapp media but as usual I never got back my memory.

I keep on deleting photos and videos both from the camera roll + whatsapp media. But I never got my memory storage back. So last resort was to delete all the apps (Waze, gMail & YouTube and some other small apps like parking apps). I just managed to get the 2.4gb needed to update. Granted I had 21k photos back then.

So I backed up my phone and then update to iOS16. But after a few failures I had to to restore it. Wasted 2-3 days of work just to solve this issue. I seem to have lost loads of photos from my album. I went from 21k to only 3k photos. At this point I don't care, I just want memory and WhatsApp back.

Media from 21k to 3k.
Phone storage from 100mb to 6gb.
I am a happy man.

Now 4-5 days later I am back to square ONE where I have no memory to even open WhatsApp.

It is absolutely ridiculous. Today I spent more than 2 hours clearing my WhatsApp media and I am supposed to have a few gigabytes back but I only got 500mb back. How I know is because when I delete something from WhatsApp it shows how many mb has been deleted from a file but on the WhatsApp memory storage counter the memory keeps on increasing instead of reducing.

1) Why is this happening? Why do I keep on losing memory? I have tons of screenshots (because I want to keep track) where I have 1gb and within a minute I've lost hundreds of mb's. And now the most crazy thing, I lost nearly 6gb with barely anything done to the phone. This is beyond ridiculous.

2) on iTunes it says that "other" (which all this while I assumed is WhatsApp) is 38gb but my WhatsApp is now at 28gb. So where did all the rest of the 10gb come from?

3) Documents & data is at 4.82gb (now 3.77gb only) so based on this alone I should have an additional 1gb storage right?

4) on iTunes it says that I have 2.99gb (after typing this message it went up to 3.38gb) free storage but on my phone barely anything. And if you top up from the additional 1gb from "documents & date" this doesn't add up.

5) Even when I add everything up based on my Itunes calculation, I have used 54gb max. So where is the rest?

Thank you

Is the price reasonable

Hi,

I would like to do this design. The best price quoted is RM7000 excluding mirror.
Is it reasonable?

*the drawings were all done by me. Not the kitchen cabinet/carpenters. I draw using ruler to scale them exactly.

My friend who is in a similar industry but not carpentry said the carpenters usually ask for RM160-200 for laminate which works out to RM3000+ for my work.
I understand shops/carpenters wanna earn more sometimes but I feel that the prices that I was quoted is quite a lot.
But my friend said he could be wrong as prices may have increased recently.
Hope I can get some insight here.

This is the story how I got to do this design;

This is my living room wall where I am going to place my tv (duh), cabinet and shoe cabinet.

Initially wanted to do a normal tv wall with acrylic, glass or melamine or laminate.
Then decided on a design to use porcelain slab for tv wall and the rest laminate.
Best prices quoted for melamine was RM7000 and RM10000 for laminate.
Paid 1000 deposit for the one with melamine. Decided not go through with melamine as the color options are very limited.
After getting their 3d design, I wasnt satisfied at all as it looked really cheap so decided to ask them for laminate which they quoted close to a ridiculous RM15k
Not sure if I can get my deposit back.

But the socket placement proved to be a challenge as it is starting from 2700mm and ends at 3500mm.
Laminate/porcelain slab is 2400mm. From there I will have balance of 180mm for a floating cabinet 530mm off the ground.
Tv is 680-710mm off the ground. Meaning there is only a balance of 180mm between the edge of the tv and edge of the laminate.

Another problem would be that the console cabinet would either be going over the socket or be on top of the socket which would be too high.
Spent weeks/months looking for a suitable design to get around this.

Another problem I have with this is that the tv wall will be bigger than the seating area meaning the tv will be off center (to the left) and that means that the sofa will have to be a bit to the left in order for it to be center with the tv.

After searching high and low online for inspiration I found this design that I love very much.

It is flushed. Everything is neat and tidy and tucked away. Everything is floating.
Plus there is space below the tv to tuck away extra chairs as my sofa is just a 2 seater.
My living room is quite small so it would be nice to have extra chairs available that can be tucked neatly nearby.

I thought I could follow the design above and put my decoder in the mirror cabinet.
I thought the issue would be opening a socket for the console.
Only later on I realized that I wouldn't be able to get signal from the remote to the decoder.

So back to having a decoder console hanging under the tv.
However like many designs that I see online, they are not practical (in our country) as we have astro decoder, tv box, etc.
They don't leave a space for decoders. I am guessing they leave it on top of the cabinet (floating or on the floor).

The other issue is that the prices for laminate wall is pretty expensive. Prices quoted ranges from RM7000-11000 for this job.
So I thought I could follow another of my favorite floating design that uses drywall I think.

Advantage of this design is that it should be much cheaper than laminate and also I am not limited by the size of the laminate which 2400mm.
With drywall I could have the hanging wall much longer and closer to the ground to perhaps 350-450mm.
Enough space for tv console compartment under the tv in 1 floating design.
However after 1 day I decided against it as I have a baby.
Drywall is very weak. If my baby decides to throw something against it or touch it, I will need to fix it and then repaint.
It will have some spots unless I paint the whole wall.
Too much work. Too much risk. So I decided against it.

So back to the drawing board with laminate.
One guy told me that he has a longer laminate of 3000mm which would be perfect as I can have it at my desired length anywhere between 2500-2600mm.
After meeting him, he said better to squeeze in the tv console/decoder in between the tv and end of the laminate. He said 150mm for decoder.

Why does Mac OS do this?

I have a question regarding Mac.

I am working on 3 files in Numbers app. I need them open at the same time.
I need to switch from Numbers spreadsheet 3 to Google and back for every data that I input.

So while in Numbers spreadsheet #3, I command + tab to go to Chrome then I I command + tab to go back into the spreadsheet that I was working on but it will for some reason always go back to another spreadsheet and not to the spreadsheet where I was originally from.

Why does it do this? It is driving me nuts.
I expanded all the files already but no difference.

I always need more steps to perform a task as compared with Windows.
2 years on and I still hate using Mac. It is really stressful.
WTA Panasonic AC feature claims

After months of researching and surveying for quite some time about aircons, last month I finally decided on Panasonic due to them having many features such as NanoG and shower cooling, both of which I think are really useful if it indeed works.

1) NanoG to kill germs so I wouldn't need to buy a separate air puirifier
2) Shower cooling is useful since I will be using 1 AC for a big space hence the coverage area is important
3) Price is more or less the same compared to its competitors (Mitsubishi, Daikin, York) even though Panasonic has way more bells and whistles.

Are those claims by Panasonic really true?

Nanoe G - It removes microorganism and dust particles as small as PM2.5 from the air.

Does the NanoG really work? Or would a standalone purifier work better?

Shower cooling - It has a sub flap and bigger flap with 2 independent motors for the 2 flaps. It supposedly helps to deliver airflow better.

But we can just set the flap in a certain direction in this case horizontally. And how can we tell this flap really does have a longer airflow? Is there a way to compare this with other AC's from the specs?

My living room and dining room and kitchen are more or less in one space. The AC will be on the main wall so that it can hit the living room and kitchen and lastly dining room on the smaller wall.

Therefore the aircon would need to cover a large area so it would be really great if this shower cooling works in concentrating a certain area and can have a more efficient airflow.

EcoNavi - it detects where energy is wasted and adjusts cooling power accordingly.
I mean it is cool but we can set the temperature and direction ourselves no? Not really necessary to me. But it is cool.

And with all these extra features; NanoG, EcoNavi), 2 motors for independent flaps, would there it be more prone to breakdown since there are more parts and sensors?

I was still 80% sure of Panasonic as I do think they would be useful if the claims are true.

However 2 shops that I went to recently said;
- Panasonic compressor is noisy. Mitsubishi is better as it is quieter and has a longer warranty of 7 years compared to 5 years Panasonic
- Panasonic has a high complain rate so they don't carry Panasonic anymore (could be an excuse to promote his other brands)

I don't mind Mitsubishi at all. It is in fact along with Daikin/York my 2nd option.
But is there any truth in the claims above?
I think the first one is the only claim that has any basis as the 2nd one could be just due to marketing.

I am looking at non inverter units btw since we only use aircon sparingly, 3-4 hours at night (timer) in the bedroom. In the living room, it would be really rare, perhaps when it is really hot during the day or when we have guests over.

I'm leaning 80%-20% to Mitsubishi now. 20% is to get the shower cooling feature for the living room only and the bedrooms go for a simple Mitsubishi. Shower cooling sounds really useful due to my layout.

Hope anyone can give any advice. Thanks

WTA Is it safe ducting hose over plaster ceiling

My house is a small condo unit. There is no window anywhere near the kitchen. The other side of the wall is the corridor from the lift to my unit and the unit next to mine. So I wouldn't be able to do ducting type of kitchen hood.
Therefore my only option would be the recycle type of kitchen hood. However everyone said it won't really efficient.

During handover thought the person in charge said can do ducting, from the kitchen to the balcony where the AC compressor already is. The hose will be pulled from the kitchen hood over the plaster ceiling to the balcony. The same was suggested by an owner of an electrical store.

The distance from the kitchen hood to the balcony would be 22 feet.

I know it will cost me to buy a longer hose and to open up a hole on the balcony but if it means that the small and grease will be eliminated much better, I wouldn't mind.

I do have some doubts;

1) Is this safe?
2) Will this affect the lighting points in the plaster ceiling or vice versa?
3) Will this affect the AC compressor in the balcony and vice versa?

Many thanks in advance

Pole System Wardrobe

Hi,

I am getting the keys to my new house next week hence already starting to source for items.
For wardrobe I was planning to do pole system as I thought it would be cheaper and less bulky compared to a traditional wooden wardrobe.

The prices for a wardrobe costs between 3-5k.
However the prices for a pole system costs RM7-8k from the 2 companies that quoted me.
That is quite significantly higher and both were without sliding door (which I think is a must otherwise it'll be dusty).

Now why I think it would be cheaper was because it consists of a few pole, hanging rods and planks for folded clothes. Much less items compared to a wooden wardrobe.
But since that the prices are much more expensive I don't think I would want to proceed.

Is it possible to DIY this? Buy the pole, rods and planks myself. Either custom made from factories or sourcing them from China?
I tried googling it but couldn't find anyone DIYing it.

Best regards

Buy new camera or just lens?

Hi,

I have a Canon 500D. I am using the camera for my real estate photos which is mostly for indoor shooting.
I would like to buy a new camera either Nikon D3400 or Nikon D5600.
My main objective is to buy a wide angle lens actually so that I can capture more when indoor.

Would my old Canon 500D serve my need if I buy a wide angle lens to pair with it?
Or it is worth it to go all out and get a new camera?

I just point, align and shoot automatically. I don't have much time usually. It has to be fast as the owners usually don't give me much time.
One gripe that I have with the 500D is the recording. It just can't record much. It only takes about 30 seconds to 1m each video until it ends abruptly.
Other than that, if the performance isn't much better than the newer cameras for my needs (indoor shooting), I will just remain with the Canon 500D and get a wide angle lens and record videos using iPhone 8.

New question.
I fancy Sony A6000 since it is small and lightweight. Very practical.
However, I can't find ultra wide angle lenses for this camera.

Thanks

Price list
Nikon D3400
RM2268 at Harvey Norman
RM1800 body only and RM2150 with lens and bag and memory card at Shashinki.

Nikon D5600
RM3677 with 18-55mm lens at Harvey Norman

Sony A6000
Ranges from RM2000-3000.

Lenses
Tokina 11-16mm lens costs RM1750.
Canon EF-S 10-18mm costs RM1030

Hi,

I own a MBP13 2017. It will be extremely costly to but so many of the Apple adapter which can only be used for 1 wall socket for only 1 device as opposed to the normal adapters which comes with USB ports as well where I can charge phones at the same time.

My concern with the normal adapters are whether it will damage my MBP due to the voltage difference.
My concern with the Apple adapter is that there might not be enough wall sockets to charge multiple devices and it is costly of course.

Many thanks in advance

Not able to transfer iPhone photos directly to

I've gone through dozens of threads via Google on how to do a simple task of transfer photos from iPhone directly to my ext. hdd using a Mac.
After reading through many suggestions such as transferring to
a) iCloud and then picking it from there or
b) transfer to the laptop and then take it from there

Both options is not what I want.
Then I found someone suggesting Image Capture. That worked to transfer to the laptop (pictures) but not directly to my ext hdd even after I chose to import there.
What is the problem?

I notice that I have a problem with editing files in my ext hdd as well which I use for my Windows based laptop.

Why can't it just be as simple as it is on Windows where it's click and drop by using Explorer only?

I've always read and heard that Apple is user friendly but from my experience it is more troublesome.
The other problem that I have is viewing scrolling through photos.
Why couldn't they just let us open and scroll through the photos right away?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WTA Working on a MacBook

Hi,

I have a question on the ease of use of a Macbook.

I am very eager to purchase a MBP13 as I've heard great things about it. Durable, no lag issue even after many years, quick boot up. I've gone through many laptops myself and everyone in my household has forever been using a Windows laptop. We all face the same issue. It will lag no matter what after just a few weeks. I make sure not to download any songs or videos (especially Torrent or mp3) on my current laptop but no matter what it will lag after a while.

So I've really had enough and want to jump to MBP. I waste so much time waiting for my laptop. It lags so much. I have been using an iPhone for the past 4 years and love it.

Thankfully my gf uses a Macbook Air so I get to use her laptop to test it out. I love how everything is so smooth even though it is not even a new laptop. Whatever I open it will just open up immediately. I open multiple apps just for the sake of it, lots of youtube videos, Spotify in the background. It is still doesn't kick up a fuss.

But when I start working on it, doing stuff that I actually intent to use the laptop for, it kinda disappoints me. I've tested it for nearly 20 times but I still am not comfortable with it.

This is what I use it for.

I take a lot of property photos as I am a property agent. For each house I will take a few shots for 1 angle. Therefore for one house there will be tons of photos. Really depends on the size of the house.

When I get back I need to select the best photos and put a number to them as I like to sort the photos in order. That is just how I do it. I want the prospects who are viewing my listing to have the best idea on how the house looks like.

So when I work on my Windows laptop it is a pretty straight forward work. I press alt + tab, click on the photo file, press Fn+F2 (for my laptop) and there I am. Rename the file.

But with the Mac, it is not as easy as that. First of all, I can't flip through the photos. In Windows, I open one photo and can just scroll the whole album with a single button. And when I like a photo hence wanna rename it, I'll just press alt + tab, click on the photo file, press Fn+F2 and voila. It is done.

With the Mac, I'll have to Command + A and then Command + O to open the files. But when I like a photo and want to rename it, I'll have to press alt+tab and then to rename I have to click on the file and choose rename.

The other option is to open the files using spacebar. That way I can press down button to scroll the pics. But if I would like to go back to the folder to rename the pic, I will have to close the photo viewer, rename it. Then the file will fly elsewhere and I will have to scroll up and start all over again.

There is no shortcut like F2 or even Fn+F2. After I rename the file, I'll have to start over again. The whole process just takes so much more time. Even though it is only a few seconds but I go through hundreds of photos. It is kinda draining.

Why is there no option to just scroll the pics and renaming the files as simple as in Windows?

Next up which is a worse issue is when I am using Excel file. My excel files contains hundreds of names and numbers. It takes ages to open up and when I want to search for a particular name or number, it will literally take minutes. I've tried using excel more than 10 times. Doesn't matter the size of the excel file. Some of them contain much less data but it still lags like nobody's business.

So now I am really confused. I really want a new laptop, a MBP. I really am sick and tired of wasting my time with my Window laptops lagging. I just want a laptop that runs fast at all times like my 4 year old iPhone. I want my productivity to be high all the time. No time to waste. The Mac does run fast but when I want to use it for work, it really fails me. I don't want to waste time but when I am using Excel especially, it wastes so much of my time. It is supposed to be user friendly as the iPhone is but from my short experience with it, working with it (at least for my use) suggests otherwise. Other than that it is exceptional though, just what I need it for it seems to be slower and more steps needed than I do on a Windows laptop.

I've looked at other alternatives such as Dell XPS and HP but the former is around the same price and the latter is slightly lower so I rather just go all the way and use a premium laptop that I am happy with for the next 4-5 years.

Does anyone here uses MBP for the same purpose as me especially Excel. Do you face the same issue?

When is the best time to purchase a Macbook Pro?

Hi,

I am to purchase a Macbook Pro 13.
When is the best time to purchase it from a physical store such as Switch, Machinese, Mac City, Harvey Norman, etc.?
When will these items usually go on sale at those shops?

Also, is it better to buy a 2016 model MBP 13 or a used 2015 MBP 15?
I have always been using 15 inch laptops so going down to 13inch feels rather strange.
I spend a lot of hours behind the laptop for work thus I feel a bit uncomfortable at the thought of staring at a small screen for hours.

Not really looking for portability as I mainly work from home.
I use the laptop for surfing the web, watching videos and work which comprises of Excel spreadsheets, PDF files and also to store a lot of photos and videos taken on a DSLR.

Thanks

Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Hi,

I am currently using BPA free plastic water bottles. My job requires me to drive around a lot therefore the water bottle is in the car most of the time. It really annoys me that the water gets warm after a while.

I am on the look out for a stainless steel bottle. The price varies massively.
Are there really huge differences in quality to justify the price differences or is it really just the "branding"?
There are others that are even more expensive than Thermos such as Tiger and Zojirushi.

Thermos with 5 years warranty RM205
http://thermosmalaysia.com/product/hydrati...uch-ffz-series/

ThermoCafe RM100 with 5 years warranty
http://www.lazada.com.my/genuine-thermos-1...a-12787958.html

Relax (China) RM61
https://potskitchenware.com/drinkware/relax...with-free-pouch

Relax (China) RM83
http://aino.com.my/products/eating-enterta...ask-1000ml.html

Zebra (Thailand) RM93
http://www.lazada.com.my/zebra-vacuum-flas...91.html?rb=1574

No name from Lazada RM63
http://www.lazada.com.my/1000ml-stainless-...ck-4227142.html

iTunes didn't restore my WhatsApp

Hi,

I need some help.

Phone: 5s
iOS: 8.4
Last back up on iTunes: 4/8/2015
Phone problem: 27/8/2015
Phone restore: 29/8/2015
WhatsApp last back up: 20/8/2015

On the 27th, my WhatsApp kept on crashing whenever I tried to share location with my client for an appointment. Usually when my WhatsApp crashes, I just restart the phone. However this time around, it didn't want to restart. It was stuck on the white screen with iPhone logo.

I sent to the shop hoping that it's just a battery issue. But it wasn't. Even after replacing the battery the phone didn't want to boot. The shop said I need to do a restore. Really frustrating as almost a month worth of data will be gone. Sigh.

So I went home and connected it to the laptop but it couldn't read my phone. I tried DFU mode and restored it with tons of hiccups along the way (all kinds of errors as per usual whenever I try to backup). After 3-4 hours finally it's done. I had to upgrade to 8.4.1.

To my surprise all the apps are missing. I don't really mind as I can always download them again. I downloaded the most important app to me, WhatsApp, because I have thousands of messages with my clients from Feb' 2015 till August. Those messages are important as they contain the dates of availability, size, prices, etc. of their properties.

I installed the app and it asked me to restore from the last back up which is on the 20th of August, size 700mb. I restored it but it was just blank!! Deleted it again and again it restored 700mb and empty. Reinstalled it again and to my surprise it only restores 400mb (fine) but still empty!!

What's going on? First of all I thought iTunes will back WhatsApp up. On 4th of August when I finally upgraded to iOS 8, something went wrong with my back up and restore 3 times, surprise surprise, it did restore every single thing from my previous back up. I haven't done any upgrade since I first got the phone in March 2014 because I always worry for things to go wrong as many of my friends complained of losing data while doing back up/upgrade. And the experience while backing up on 4th of August was really terrible. And again on the 29th of August. I don't understand why there are so many errors from iTunes.

So
1) why are my apps and most importantly WhatsApp not restored?
2) why is my chat history blank even after restoring via WhatsApp itself (via iCloud)?
3) is there a way for me to rectify this?

I would appreciate any kind of input. I'm really stressed already for losing nearly a month worth of data (photos, videos, audio, WhatsApp messages for 1 week). I really hope I can at least get my WhatsApp chat history back. Thank you.

Create new iCloud account

Hi,

I would like to create a new iCloud account but I want to keep my WhatsApp chat history at all cost.
I am currently using my little brother's iCloud account.
The reason why I'm using his account is because he said it's better so that we can share same apps.

I noticed that the chat history can't be backed up as it needs iCloud but the iCloud is full and my brother doesn't even remember the login or password so he can't even login to make space.

For the past 4-5 months, I've lost my chat history 3x already.
Today it happened again for no apparent reason.
Asked me to make 250mb space which I did but it only recovered up until end of April.
I've had close to 500 conversations in that time until now.

Why my chat history is so important is that I have thousands of clients that I interact with and in May alone, WhatsApp history is essential for my work. I don't have time to manually note down on paper or write it out on the laptop anymore since last year. So I really hope my WhatsApp will stop f*cking up.

Now, is it possible for me to create a new account so that I get my own iCloud account with a lot of storage for me to back up my WhatsApp chat history.
