Nazri admits he was wrong about protection for Datuk T

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz has admitted he was wrong in his earlier statement about the protection offered to the "Datuk T trio" under the Whistleblower Protection Act.

"It was a mistake and that is why I am making a correction here," he said when replying to a question raised by Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) during the committee stage of the Supplementry Supply Bill in Parliament Tuesday.

He clarified that he had said the three personalities may be protected under the Act, when initially questioned by the media on the issue at a press conference here Monday, without knowing the full extent of the case.

"It is clear that the Act cannot be used and they are not protected if there is an investigation that leads to court action against them.

"The Act does not afford them protection as they had revealed their identities and made their revelation to the media and public," he added.

Meanwhile, earlier Tuesday, Opposition MP Yusmadi Yusoff (PKR-Balik Pulau) said Datuk T cannot be protected under Act as the trio did not meet the requirements in the law.

He said Nazri's statement Monday that Datuk T can be protected under the Act contradicted what deputy minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong had said in Parliament last year.

"On April 20 last year, Liew told the Dewan Rakyat that a person cannot be protected under the Act if he or she gives information on misconduct to the media," he said in a press conference at the Parliament lobby.

"Liew said this is because it does not comply with Section 7 (1) of the Act, which states that a whistleblower is entitled to protection when the disclosure of misconduct is received by any enforcement agency.

"The media is not included in the definition of an enforcement agency under this Act," Yusmadi added.

The Datuk T trio, comprising businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, Perkasa treasurer-general Datuk Shuaib Lazim and former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik, had exposed the existence of the sex video on March 21.

The next day, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim lodged a police report saying he was not the man in the sex video.

SINGAPORE: The December issue of Forbes Asia magazine on Friday named Tony Fernandes, the pioneering chief executive officer of AirAsia Group, as its 2010 Businessman of the Year, reported China's Xinhua news agency.

The 46-year-old charismatic Malaysian entrepreneur and the founder of Tune Air Sdn. Bhd., introduced the first budget no-frills airline, AirAsia, to Malaysians with the tagline "Now everyone can fly".

AirAsia has now become the region largest low-cost carrier, with nearly 8,000 employees, 100 planes and 140 routes including 40 that no airline had served before.

Its Malaysia-listed parent company, AirAsia Bhd., saw first-half revenue grow 18 percent year-on-year to US$562mil (RM1.77bil).

Fernandes describes his vision as "serving the underserved."

Any avid streetballers out there? I've been told that if I wanted to play streetball with some serious ballers I should goto Bukit Jelutong or Balakong near Mines. Anywhere else?
