Malicious staff

I'm asking this question to seek some opinion from the experts.

My fren has a company which their corp application was written by one of their staff namely A.

The company wants the source code from A, but after some time A is still reluctant to pass the codes to the company.

My fren has a tracer which traced conversation logs of A with other ppl, he threatens to (or already had) plug a backdoor to this corp application if he finds that the company wants to sack him. A is aware that this corp application is very specifically designed and hard to take over by someone out of the business field.

Now my fren is a IT-ediot, he is unable to afford to build a seperate DR system as it is costly.

NDA agreements seems useless if you know that the person isn't going to play nice. And any damages made would cripple the business.

If you are my fren, how would you deal with this situation?
