HSBC Foreign Currency Time Deposit

Hi everyone, I'm considering shifting a portion of my cash portfolio into foreign currency and I am surveying multiple banks.

I found this from HSBC (https://www.hsbc.com.my/accounts/products/f...y/time-deposit/) where the rates are so high (5% p.a. for USD).

Did anyone have any experience with this? How does the FD work? I have also read that upon maturity it will be withdrawn back into MYR (which makes no sense since the bank charges about 2% above market rate in currency exchange - in which the interest gained are all spent on offsetting currency charges).

Besides that, I am also looking at this foreign currency account (https://www.hsbc.com.my/accounts/products/foreign-currency/) where foreign currency account maintenance fee will be applied for any month that aggregate balance of RM20,000 equivalent is not met. Does this threshold takes into account the amount in Foreign FD? If yes, then the 20k will have to be idle to avoid RM10/month which is pretty high.

Rental income tax deduction

Hi there, not sure if this is the right forum to ask. I’m reading up on https://phl.hasil.gov.my/pdf/pdfam/PR_12_2018.pdf for rental income deduction.

Scenario:
[Tax under individual, not corporate]
I have 2 property, 1 is renting out @ RM1500 a month, 1 is not renting out. Both property are currently under mortgage loan with a RM900 bank interest/month.

Under example 15 whereby I can only deduct my taxable income if I’m renting the property out, meaning that I will get taxed @ RM1500-900=600 a month for 12 months. I am not allowed to deduct my tax for my property 2 because I’m not renting it out.

However, as long as my property 2 is rented out then the interest can be aggregated as an expense. What if I rent out the second property to my parent @ RM1 a month? Wouldn’t it make my income RM1501 and deduction of RM1800 which leads to 0 tax.

Is this going to be something that will flag the LHDN? Besides that, I will need to get my property 2 stamped right?

Is there any lawyer/accountant/tax agent that can provide any advice?

Japan to release radioactive water back into ocean

TOKYO — Japan plans to release more than 1 million metric tons of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean, a process set to begin this summer and continue for three decades or more.

For years, the contaminated water — equivalent to more than 500 Olympic-size swimming pools — has been stored in large metal tanks near the plant, the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. But Japan is running out of space to build more tanks to accommodate the contaminated groundwater and rainwater that continues to enter the site.

The pending release has become highly politicized by neighboring countries, including South Korea and China. Fukushima’s fishing and agricultural industries are also worried about potential reputational harm on their products, which still carry the stigma of radioactive exposure.

The Japanese public is split on the plan, and many remain distrustful of the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), which has been criticized for playing down bad news about the severity of the disaster in the early days.

SOS: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/0...-nuclear-plant/

Need to reduce intake on seafood and sea salt soon

Anwar don’t need BN

Imagine this:

1. Anwar starts a press conference
2. Publicly announce whoever side with BN is supportive of corruption
3. PN now cannot join forces with BN because they associate with corruption if they do
4. Without BN, they cannot control more than 111 seats, hence lose control of parliament
5. Biggest coalition now is the leader of unity government
6. ???
7. PROFIT!!!!

Let’s be honest, PH+BN will never last more than a year. Non confidence vote will only drag down Anwar as a non performing PM, and PH will be associated with corruption forever. Why not just go for a unity government instead?

Unity government means politician have to actually work to show result to get vote for next round. Politician only want power and money, not more work, hence nobody is talking about this. PH got strong people, why not abuse this strategy.

bersatu+pas+GPS+BN you think they can last? Everyone want their own piece of pie, no way muhyiddin can fulfill everyone. It will crack itself as it doesn’t have proper leadership.

BN IS A TRAP CARD, NOT A SUPPORT CARD

Edit: https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...o-sarawak/41008
Haven’t even become govt already start demanding stuff.
Over half of Malaysians blame women for rape

Our country is really turning into third world shithole

SOS

————————————————————————————————

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 — Malaysians have a fairly good understanding of what violence against women (VAW) is but less than half of the respondents support gender equality, a recent study by rights group Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) has shown.

The report from the study launched today found that just 46.3 per cent of Malaysians polled support gender equality while 52.7 per cent of respondents opposed to violence-endorsing attitudes.

Worryingly, the survey found that 53.3 per cent of respondents believed that domestic violence is a “normal” reaction of stress or frustration, and 43 per cent believed that a woman can make a man so angry that he hits her when he does not mean to.

Additionally, 30 per cent believed that women who flirt often are to blame for causing their partners to hit them out of jealousy, while 26.5 per cent believed that domestic violence is “forgivable” if the perpetrator is so angry that they lose control.

“These suggest that there are still circumstances for which VAW is acceptable such as when perceived as an emotional gesture, or in the event the victim has behaved in a way that triggers the abuse.

“Malaysians also tend to underestimate the complexity of abuse, with 37.1 per cent of the survey population believing that it is not as hard to leave an abusive relationship, and 44.9 per cent who believe that women who stay with their abusive partners, are also responsible for the ongoing abuse,” the group said in a statement.

Other findings showed that while 83.4 per cent of respondents believed that rape happens when a man cannot control his desires, 51.3 per cent felt such sexual crimes happen due to the way a woman dresses.

Malaysians however showed less knowledge pertaining to cyber harassment, stalking and controlling behaviour with 11 per cent of them considering controlling behaviour as not a form of domestic violence.

On the bright side, 70.3 per cent of respondents were strongly opposed to child marriages which is still allowed under Shariah law, civil and customary laws in Malaysia where girls aged 16 and 17 are allowed to marry under certain circumstances.

In response, WAO listed nine recommendations to tackle VAW, which included increasing public understanding, actively challenge underlying violence-endorsing attitudes that help to sustain VAW, and political will to combat child marriages and female genital mutilations.

The study included 1,000 participants from the Malaysian population administered via an online survey company, Ipsos.

It was done with support from the Global Fund for Women, Yayasan Sime Darby, contributions from a panel of five Malaysian academic experts, and sixteen VAW survivors.

Lebanese currency crashed > 90%

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Restaurant owner Antoine Haddad has been in business for over 35 years but says he is running out of hope as Lebanon struggles with one of the deepest financial crises of modern times.

The Lebanese pound lost around 90% of its value in the past two years, propelling three quarters of the population into poverty.

For Haddad, the difference between this and other crises that Lebanon has experienced, including the 1975-1990 civil war, is that it feels like there is no end in sight.

"Previously, you had hope that: 'tomorrow the war will end, we do this and that and go back to where we were', but this time there is no hope," he said.

"They (those in power) promised us we would have plenty of money in our hands, and we indeed have a lot of it to play with," he said sarcastically referring to the growing stacks of banknotes needed for even basic purchases after the currency drop.

Haddad, whose small restaurant has been in business since 1984, said he can only buy 10% of the olive oil he used to buy with the same money.

The government, facing an election in March as it tries to secure an IMF recovery plan, has tripled transport allowance for employees to alleviate some of the pain but most salaries, including the minimum wage, have not been adjusted.

Pub-owner Moussa Yaakoub is also taken aback by the amount of cash he needs to run his business.

"I have never before held in my hands this amount of money," he said as he counted some 10 million pounds, worth $6,600 at the pre-crisis rate but now less than $500 at the market rate.

That much money used to cover a pub's operation for months, but now only pays a couple of bills, he said.

Grocery store owner Roni Bou Rached has changed the way he stores money in his cash drawer now that smaller notes are used less, and coins are almost non-existent.

"I am hesitant how much to carry in my pocket when I leave.
Bose QC 35 II earpad replacement

Hi. I am using my Bose QC 35 ii for quite some time and the earpad is starting to crack. I want to buy a new one to replace but I found only cheap one with reviews saying that the cushion is not as soft on Lazada.

Does anyone know where can I get some original earpad or high quality OEM replacement? Online or offline shop around KL suggestion will be helpful. Thanks.

Harman Kardon Soundsticks 4 vs Aura Studio 3

Hi. I’m looking to get a Bluetooth/WiFi speaker to play some jazz music in my studio (few hundred sqft only).

I am looking at HK Soundsticks 4 and Aura Studio 3 but couldn’t find much comparison online. Saw some Reddit post talking about HK producing low quality speaker.

I tested out Sonos one and Aura studio 3 earlier in the mall but personally I felt like aura studio 3 sounds better. Unfortunately I don’t have any chance to test for soundsticks 4.

Does anyone have any opinion/review on these product?

My priority of the speaker is not on loudness nor explosive sound - prefer clarify and soothing sound as I will be playing more jazzy, lo-fi and classical music.

Tax Amendment

Hi. I submitted my tax today and only realized that the parents tax relief claim can only be claimed if parents is > 60 years old as well as the tourism relief is only limited to the limited amount of hotels.

I would like to submit an e-BE amendment form to LHDN (http://www.hasil.gov.my/bt_goindex.php?bt_kump=5&bt_skum=1&bt_posi=2&bt_unit=5000&bt_sequ=6&bt_lgv=2). How do I check which branch that my file is at?

Anyone done this before?

Update:

Went to Jalan Duta Branch but they say need to go back to original branch.

They gave me a form/letter template to fill. Need to print out all the supporting documents (receipts, EA form and etc.) and submit it back to the original registration branch.

TLDR: The steps is to prepare all the supporting documents first, go to your registration branch and fill up the form on the spot and process.
