In need of help: Bedridden Har on life support at the Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Baru.

JOHOR BARU: At just 17 years old, Har Li Jun is bedridden and fighting for her life.

Diagnosed with a condition called tetraplegia post cervical spinal cyst removal, Har’s nightmare started 97 days ago.

Tetraplegia, also known as quadriplegia, is paralysis caused by illness or injury that results in partial or total loss of use of all four limbs and torso.

Har, who worked as an assistant at a pet shop here, woke up one morning and was not able to move her body from the waist down.

She was rushed to Hospital Sultan Ismail by her 22-year-old half-brother.

After several medical tests, she was transferred to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for an urgent surgery to remove a cyst.

Yayasan Kebajikan Suria Kawasan Permas Johor Baru secretary James Ho, who has taken up Har’s case, said in an interview that the girl has been left bedridden due to her condition and doctors were still trying to identify the cause.

“The girl’s mother, who lives in Bahau, Negri Sembilan, has been in touch with us in hopes of getting help,” said Ho.

Har, who dropped out of school to support her family, is in need of a portable ventilator as she is currently on life support at the hospital, he said.

Ho said the foundation aims to help Har’s family raise RM100,000 to purchase a portable ventilator and for other expenses for the girl.

He added that with the machine, Har could be eventually discharged and placed in a nursing home where she would get full-time care.

“Her mother is unable to look after her round the clock as she holds a job and has two other sons to care for, one of whom is a special needs child,” said Ho.

HI, can RHB online users help me? This past two days, when i access the page, the left side menu is no longer "clickable" and blocked by a "up-down" white stroller. Refer to above pic. I cannot select any of the icon on the left side menu.

At first, I thought my browser firefox settings caused this problem. So i switched to chrome, and the problem persist. Can other RHB users test and let me know?

The news came as a huge blow to him, who was unable to accept that he would have to undergo dialysis to live.

Shaun said:

“My father thought for a while and told the family afterwards that he did not wish to for dialysis to affect his quality of life.

"He chose to give up on treatment.”

At this point, Shuan knew that there were only two options for his father.

The first was dialysis, which he had rejected, leaving the only solution to be a kidney transplant.

However, after the family persuaded the elderly man to go for a transplant, they were told that he would be placed on a waiting list, and he would have to wait at least eight years.

To offer him a chance at life, Shaun decided to donate one of his kidneys to his father.

After a two to three-month intensive check, it was concluded that Shaun’s kidney would be suitable for the transplant.

On July 2017, the father-and-son duo underwent a six-hour-long operation for the transplant.

Both resumed their normal lives after.

Shaun added:

“To commemorate this meaningful event, I decided to keep the titanium stitchings left from my father’s operation.

“I initially intended just to keep it by my side, but later had the idea to forge them into a wedding ring which I wear every day.

They say nothing is stronger than the bond between a mother and her daughter.

When Madam Chee found out that she could save her daughter's life by donating a kidney to her, she did not think twice.

She said: "It's my kidney, it's my daughter, who can stop me? Once I've decided, no one can stop me."

46-year-old Shirley Lau suffered from end-stage kidney failure and needed a kidney transplant to lead a normal life. Even so, she had reservations about her mother's sacrifice.

She said: "The feeling is quite complicated because in a way I'm worried, but in a way it is a solution for me. They (the doctors) went through a lot of tests. So based on that fact, we were more assured."

Months after the surgery at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in July, both mother and daughter are doing well.

Doctors say being too old to donate is a common misconception about organ donation. Evidence suggests that older healthy donors are not at a higher risk of surgical complications compared to younger donors.

So more older living donors above the age of 60 could be considered for surgery, if they are found to be mentally and psychologically suitable.

Doctors say that on average, the age difference between an older living donor and the recipient should be 10 to 20 years. But in Madam Chee and Shirley's case, their age difference of nearly 30 years is an exception.

Dr Terence Kee, a consultant at SGH's Department of Renal Medicine, said: "There was special consideration, based on the fact that Shirley's mum's kidney function is far beyond average expectation and also the fact that Shirley is a much smaller person who would benefit from receiving her mother's kidney, which is ... bigger in size."

Studies have shown that the survival rate of up to five years is the same for all patients who receive kidneys from living donors, irrespective of whether the donors are young or old. In contrast, kidney patients who are on dialysis have a lower survival rate.

About 1,000 people in Singapore suffer from kidney failure every year. At present, over 500 people are on the waiting list for a kidney.

SGH carried out 10 living kidney transplants last year.
