Law student falls to her death from 18th floor

GEORGE TOWN: A young law student plunged to her death from the 21-storey Menara Umno building in Jalan Macalister here.

Tieu Hooi Theng ( pic), 21, was believed to have fallen from the 18th floor, where investigators found a pair of shoes, a handphone and a car key that purportedly belonged to her.

They also found a note in Mandarin in her parked Perodua Viva in nearby Jalan Zainal Abidin, which read: “Mother.. father.. please take care. Eldest and second brother, please take care of our parents. I am sorry for being useless. I am sorry that I have to be ‘ naughty’ this time. I love you all.”

A security guard at Menara Umno, where her college was located, found Hooi Theng’s body sprawled on the floor of an adjacent empty storage building at about 7.40am yesterday.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the police did not find any evidence to indicate foul play.

Hooi Theng was a first year Bachelor of Law student.

ACP Mior Faridalatrash said the victim, from Taman Mesra Permai in Butterworth, was supposed to have sat for an examination yesterday and she had allegedly refused to do so.
“We understand her father had insisted that she sit for the examination,” he said.

A forensic officer at the Penang Hospital mortuary said Hooi Theng’s death was due to multiple injuries caused by the fall.

She was the youngest of three siblings.

A family member, who declined to be named, said since she was young, examinations had always made Hooi Theng nervous.

At the mortuary yesterday was Hooi Theng’s eldest brother as well as an uncle and an aunt.

They were too distraught to talk to the media.
