Journalist issued LOD as Azam begins legal action

A journalist has been issued a letter of demand on behalf of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki in what is believed to be the first legal move against those involved in claims regarding his ownership of shares from certain companies some six years ago.

Lalitha Kunaratnam, a journalist at Independent News Service or INS, said she was issued the letter earlier today.

“Thanks,” she added in a Twitter post tagging MACC.

According to a screenshot of the letter shared in the same post, the demand to cease and desist concerned two articles written by Lalitha in December last year, titled “Business ties among MACC leadership: How deep does it go? (Part 1)” and “Business ties among MACC leadership: How deep does it go? (Part 2)”.

Azam said yesterday that he would take legal action against those who had levelled accusations at him, calling the moves an attempt to tarnish his image and to erode public trust in the anti-graft agency.

He also said no wrongdoing was committed in allowing his brother, Nasir Baki, to conduct business using his account to buy shares on the open market.

His comments came as MACC’s Anti-Corruption Advisory Board said no conflict of interest had occurred in his purchase of the shares.

However the Securities Commission Malaysia said today that Azam had gone against the law in sharing central depositories accounts.

It said that every securities account opened with a central depository must be in the name of the beneficial owner of the deposited securities or the name of an authorised nominee.

It also said that it would be in touch with the parties involved, including Azam, for an explanation and to verify the statements made, as well as to gather any relevant evidence.

https://www.malaysianow.com/news/2022/01/06...s-legal-action/

A group of 17 prisoners in Singapore sentenced to death for various drug offences is seeking a court declaration that the government had acted with discrimination and bias in their prosecution due to their Malay ethnicity, in a historic suit that appears set to renew debate on the treatment of Malays in the city-state.

The convicts, all Singaporeans with the exception of one Malaysian, are represented by M Ravi, a prominent Singaporean lawyer known for handling high-profile cases that frequently ruffle the government’s feathers.

They have named the attorney-general as the defendant, accusing him of breaching a constitutional guarantee on equal treatment under the law, adding that their investigations, trials and convictions under the draconian Misuse of Drugs Act had been arbitrary and based on the “irrelevant factor of our ethnicity”.

A pre-trial conference, or case management, will be held tomorrow to set the trial date.

The prisoners in their suit furnished statistics and graphs on the trend of prosecution for drug offences in Singapore to show how Malays are less likely to have their death sentence quashed or commuted to a jail term upon appeal.

In their joint affidavit sighted by MalaysiaNow, spanning close to 100 pages, they said that Malays sentenced to death are “significantly overrepresented” compared to their share in the population of Singapore.

They said while Singapore’s racial proportion has remained more or less the same over the decades, the same is not the case when it comes to people who are sentenced to death.

“While the ethnic composition of the population has remained very stable, the disparity between the proportion of Malays in the ordinary population and the proportion of Malays who make up those sentenced to death for drug offences has increased over the last decade.

“At the same time, the number of persons of Chinese ethnicity sentenced to death for drug offences has decreased by almost an equivalent amount,” said the plaintiffs in their affidavit issued on Aug 13, which includes extensive official data and statistics.

Malays make up 13.5% of the population in the city-state, where 74.3% are Chinese and 9% are Indians, based on official statistics up to June last year.

Singapore does not release any official numbers on its death row prisoners.

But giving an ethnic breakdown, the plaintiffs said 50 out of 77 people sentenced to death between 2010 and 2021 were Malays, 15 Indians, 10 Chinese and two from other races.

They added that out of the 28 who have had their death sentences commuted, 12 were Chinese and nine were Malays.

They also said that within the same 11-year period, Malays made up 66 of the 120 prosecutions for capital drug offences, where some 76% ended up being handed the death sentence. They said this pointed to a systematic targeting of Malays by the Central Narcotics Bureau of Singapore (CNB).

“The plaintiffs claim that the sheer number of prosecutions of Malays for death eligible offences when compared to persons of other ethnicities shows that CNB investigatory practices are targeted towards intercepting offenders from the Malay community, and less towards detecting offenders from other communities, or that a disproportionate number of prosecutions are proceeded with against Malay suspects as opposed to suspects of other ethnicities,” they said.

Sos https://www.malaysianow.com/news/2021/08/31...of-racial-bias/

Businessman paid RM3.8mil to secure RM3.6mil loan

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2021...e-rm36mil-funds

JOHOR BARU: A 74-year-old businessman whose printing business was badly affected due to the movement control order since last year thought he could reverse his fortunes by taking up a loan from an international body.

However, the “friend” he met via Facebook who offered to help him secure a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) turned out to be a scammer.

Promising the businessman IMF loans totalling US$900,000 (RM3.6mil), the swindler managed to con the businessman out of RM3.8mil as upfront payments.

It is learnt that between July and December last year, the businessman banked in a total of 64 transactions in the hope of securing the IMF loan.

The victim is believed to have deposited RM12,800 as initial payment but the fraudster kept asking for more, convincing the businessman that all the money he paid was for advance payments to secure the IMF loan.

Unable to take the constant harassment for additional payments and having depleted all his savings, the victim finally decided that he had had “enough” and lodged a report at the Tampoi police station several days ago.

Johor commercial crime investigations department chief Asst Comm Mohd Salleh Abdullah said the police were investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

He urged the public not to be duped by people whom they meet via social media and to always verify issues related to loans with Bank Negara.

Those with information are advised to contact the CCID hotline at 013-211 1222.
Woman kills lover for impregnating another woman

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/02/woman-a...-another-woman/

By Paul Olayemi— SAPELE
The death of two lovers, Ufuoma and Mathilda, at the Amukpe area of Sapele in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta state has been blamed on jealousy.

On Friday morning, the bodies of Ufuoma and Mathilda were discovered, with reports alleging that the live-in lovers had died from food poisoning or probably generator fumes, since they were said to have put on their generator after returning from a party late on Thursday night.

However, sources close to them revealed to Vanguard that Mathilda poisoned Ufuoma because she learned another woman was pregnant for him.

“Ufuoma impregnated another woman and when Mathilda found out, she could not hold back ”

Mathilda is the jealous type. And let me tell you, there are injuries on Ufuoma’s wrist and body.

”Morever she has repeatedly said she will kill the guy and kill herself if she finds out he is dating another girl. That is what happened,” a source who simply wants to be addressed as Bobos said.

Another source, who craved anonymity, and described Ufuoma as a jovial transporter who plies Sapele-Warri route said relatives and friends had called the deceased line all through Thursday without response.

He alleged that Mathilda was still alive on Friday morning. “It was Mathilda who actually opened the door on Friday morning, and came out with her younger one who was living with them.

”People saw her and I think it was after then that she drank the poison. The story of poisoning by fish or generator fumes is not truth.” Delta State Police spokesperson, Onome Onowakpoyeya, on Friday, confirmed the death of the two persons.

Onome added: “When the police visited the scene, they prevented us from going in, so the case was not officially reported.”

Meanwhile, the bodies of the lovers was on Friday committed to Mother Earth. A family source said Mathilda was buried at her family home in Amukpe, while Ufuoma’s corpse was committed to mother earth somewhere unknown.

Malaysian journals top ‘fraudulent’ publications

https://www.malaysianow.com/news/2021/02/14...demic-database/

Malaysian scholarly journals form a large chunk of more than 300 “fraudulent journals” found in a respectable global citation database used to gauge tertiary institutions worldwide in annual rankings.

Fraudulent journals, also known as “predatory journals”, are publications lacking in research quality and with questionable content, which are often liberal in accepting articles without scrutiny, and in most cases, for a fee.

A total of 324 such journals published from across the world have been found to have infiltrated Scopus, a Netherlands-based global citation database made up of more than 30,000 journals covering life sciences, social sciences, physical sciences and health sciences.

The revelation, besides renewing a debate on the quality of research work by Malaysian universities, could also call into question the annual global rankings of universities.

At least two major organisations, Times Higher Education and QS, rely heavily on data from Scopus in publishing their annual rankings of universities worldwide. With more citations of its academics’ works in Scopus, a university stands a greater chance of boosting its global rankings.

The revelation is based on the work of two economists from the Czech Republic, Vit Machacek and Martin Srholec, who provided a country analysis of questionable journals found in Scopus covering the period between 2015 and 2017.

While the hotbed of predatory journals comes from countries with large populations such as India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Egypt, Malaysia’s listing among the top countries of origin for such journals may reflect badly on the quality of local academic work.

Among Scopus’ criteria for academic journals indexed in its database is the quality of their editorial board members as well as consistency in publication.

By 2014, it was said that there were more Malaysian academic articles indexed by Scopus – some 47,000 – than from Thailand and Singapore.

Machacek and Srholec’s study ranks Malaysia fifth among 20 countries considered as the biggest offenders in terms of predatory journals.

At the top of the list is Kazakhstan with 17% of such articles, followed by Indonesia (16.7%), Iraq (13%), Albania (12%) and Malaysia (11.6%).

Malaysia also appears in the top 20 lists for fraudulent work in three fields: health sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences, occupying the second place in the latter two.

Machacek and Srholec’s study ranks Malaysia fifth among 20 countries considered as the biggest offenders in terms of predatory journals.
“In these countries, predatory publication practices have apparently become a systemic problem at the national level, not limited to particular clusters,” Machacek and Srholec said about their findings.

The findings are likely to highlight a long debated issue on academic fraud in Malaysian universities.

MalaysiaNow understands that this time, some within the academic community have been unsettled by the possibility that many of the questionable research works published in these predatory journals were financed by public funds through research grants from the government.

The government recognises five universities as research-based: Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Successive governments have allocated hundreds of millions of ringgit to these universities in research and development grants.

The latest revelations might lend credence to critics’ argument that Scopus – and world university rankings – should not be the benchmark for institutions to measure their research.

“But with the obsession for better world rankings, many universities in Malaysia are left with little choice but to make Scopus a key indicator,” a senior academic leading a local public university told MalaysiaNow.

Earlier this year, a cleric at the religious school he faithfully attended took him into a washroom and tried to rape him.

In this Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020 photo, Pakistani villagers gather outside the home of student Muhimman, who was allegedly abused by a cleric, in Pakpattan, Pakistan. Earlier this year, a cleric at the religious school he faithfully attended raped him.

In this Feb. 5, 2020 photo, Mohammad Iqbal talks to her daughter Misbah, center, who was allegedly abused by her religious teacher in Leiyah, Pakistan.

PAKPATTAN, Pakistan (AP) — Muhimman proudly writes his name slowly, carefully, one letter at a time, grinning broadly as he finishes. He’s just 11 years old and was a good student who had dreams of being a doctor.

School frightens him now. Earlier this year, a cleric at the religious school he faithfully attended in the southern Punjab town of Pakpattan took him into a washroom and tried to rape him. Muhimman’s aunt, Shazia, who wanted only her first name used, said she believes the abuse of young children is endemic in Pakistan’s religious schools. She said she has known the cleric, Moeed Shah, since she was a little girl and describes him as an habitual abuser who used to ask little girls to pull up their shirts.

“He has done wrong with boys and also with two or three girls,” Shazia said, recalling one girl the cleric brutalized so badly he broke her back.

An investigation by The Associated Press found dozens of police reports, known here as First Information Reports, alleging sexual harassment, rape and physical abuse by Islamic clerics teaching in madrassas or religious schools throughout Pakistan, where many of the country’s poorest study. The AP also documented cases of abuse through interviews with law enforcement officials, abuse victims and their parents. The alleged victims who spoke for this story did so with the understanding only their first names would be used.

There are more than 22,000 registered madrassas in Pakistan, teaching more than 2 million children. But there are many more religious schools that are unregistered. They are typically started by a local cleric in a poor neighborhood, attracting students with a promise of a meal and free lodging. There is no central body of clerics that governs madrassas. Nor is there a central authority that can investigate or respond to allegations of abuse by clerics, unlike the Catholic Church, which has a clear hierarchy topped by the Vatican.

The government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has promised to modernize the curriculum and make the madrassas more accountable, but there is little oversight.

Police say the problem of sexual abuse of children by clerics is pervasive and the scores of police reports they have received are just the tip of the iceberg. Yet despite the dozens of reports, none have resulted in the conviction of a cleric. Religious clerics are a powerful group in Pakistan and they close ranks when allegations of abuse are brought against one of them. They have been able to hide the widespread abuse by accusing victims of blasphemy or defamation of Islam.

Families in Pakistan are often coerced into “forgiving” clerics, said Deputy Police Superintendent Sadiq Baloch, speaking in his office in the country’s northwest, toward the border with Afghanistan.

Overcome by shame and fear that the stigma of being sexually abused will follow a child into adulthood, families choose instead to drop the charges, he said. Most often, when a family forgives the cleric the investigation ends because the charges are dropped.

“It is the hypocrisy of some of these mullahs, who wear the long beard and take on the cloak of piety only to do these horrible acts behind closed doors, while openly they criticize those who are clean shaven, who are liberal and open minded,” Baloch said. “In our society so many of these men, who say they are religious, are involved in these immoral activities.”

‘I WANT THIS MULLAH HANGED’

Police officials say they have no idea how many children are abused by religious clerics in Pakistan. The officials said clerics often target young boys who have not yet reached puberty in part because of the restrictive nature of Pakistan’s still mostly conservative society, where male interaction with girls and women is unacceptable. The clerics for the most part had access to and trust with boys, who are less likely to report a sexual assault.

Eight-year-old Yaous from Pakistan’s remote northern Kohistan region is one of those boys.

Yaous’ father was a poor laborer who had no education and spoke only the local language of his area, yet he wanted to educate his son. He had heard of a religious school in Mansehra, several hundred kilometers (miles) south of his village, where other boys from the area had gone. Too poor to even own a phone, his father went for months without speaking to his son.

Yaous is small for his eight years. His features are slight. In an interview with the AP, with his uncle interpreting, Yaous’ tiny body shivered as he told of his ordeal.

It was near the end of December last year — a holiday at the madrassa. Most of the students had left. Only Yaous and a handful of students had stayed behind. His village was hours away, and the cost of transportation home was too much for his parents.

The other students had gone to wash their clothes and Yaous said he was alone inside the mosque with Qari Shamsuddin, the cleric. The sexual assault was unexpected and brutal. The boy said Shamsuddin grabbed his hand, dragged him into a room and locked the door.

“It was so cold. I didn’t understand why he was taking my warm clothes off,” Yaous said, his voice was barely a whisper.

As Yaous remembered what happened, he buried his head deeper into his jacket. The cleric grabbed a stick, he said. It was small, maybe about 12 inches. The first few sharp slaps stung.

“The pain made me scream and cry, but he wouldn’t stop,” Yaous said. The boy was held prisoner for two days, raped repeatedly until he was so sick the cleric feared he would die and took him to the hospital.

At the hospital, Dr. Faisal Manan Salarzai said Yaous screamed each time he tried to approach him. Yaous was so small and frail looking, Salarzai called him the “baby.”

“The baby was having a lot of bruises on his body — on his head, on his chest, on his legs, so many bruises on other parts of his body,” Salarzai said.

Suspicious, Salarzai ordered Yaous moved to the isolation ward where he examined him, suspecting he had been sexually assaulted. The examination revealed brutal and repetitive assaults.

But Solarzai said Yaous’ uncle refused to believe his nephew was sexually assaulted, instead he said the boy had fallen down. “He said the uncle finally said: ‘If news spreads in our area that he has been sexually assaulted it will be very difficult for him to survive in our area.’”

“He was not willing to talk about it or even think that he was sexually assaulted,” said Solarzai. But the evidence was overwhelming and the doctor contacted the police.

The cleric was arrested and is now in jail. Police have matched his DNA samples to those found on Yaous. But despite the arrest, fellow clerics and worshippers at the Madrassah-e-Taleem-ul-Quran mosque located in a remote region of northwest Pakistan dispute the charges. They say Shamsuddin is innocent, the victim of anti-Islamic elements in the country. The clerics and worshippers also say the accusation is part of a conspiracy to discredit Pakistan’s religious leaders and challenge the supremacy of Islam, a rallying cry often used by right-wing religious clerics seeking to enrage mobs to assert their power.

Yaous’ father, Abdul Qayyum, said he was ashamed he had not spoken to his son in more than three months before the attack happened.

“I want this mullah hanged. Nothing else will do,” Qayyum said.

‘FORGIVE ME’

Young boys are not the only victims of sexual abuse by religious clerics. Many young girls like Misbah, who is from a deeply conservative south Punjab village of Basti Qasi, have also been targeted by religious leaders.

Her father, Mohammad Iqbal, isn’t exactly sure how old Misbah is. He thinks she is 11 because in rural Pakistan many births are not registered or are registered much later, and it is just a guess when children are born. They share their small cinderblock structures with several goats and an extended family made up it seems of mostly children who play tag and run around the dirt compound. Misbah, who struggled for words, said she was raped in the mosque next door, where she had been studying the Quran for three years.

The assault happened one morning after she stayed behind to sweep the mosque. The other children had been sent home and the cleric, someone she trusted, asked Misbah to help.

“I had just began to clean when he slammed shut the mosque door,” she said in her native Saraiki language. “I didn’t know why and then he suddenly grabbed me and pulled me into a nearby room. I was screaming and shouting and crying. She couldn’t say how long the assault went on. All she could remember was screaming for her father to help her but he wouldn’t stop, he wouldn’t stop, she repeated.

It was her uncle, Mohammed Tanvir, who rescued her. He had been on his way to college but stopped at the mosque to use the washroom. He noticed a pair of child’s shoes outside the door.

“Then I heard screaming from inside, she was screaming for her father,” Tanvir said. He smashed the door down saw his niece sprawled and naked on the floor. “It looked as if she had fainted,” he said. Her blood-stained pants were in a corner. The cleric knelt at his feet.

“‘Forgive me’ he kept saying to me,’” Tanvir recalled. The cleric was arrested but freed on bail.

‘SUCH A BEAST SHOULD NOT NE SPARED’

In the wake of the attempted rape of Muhimman, the young boy who had proudly showed his writing skills, his aunt said there has been a concerted attempt to silence the family.

“The village people say these are our spiritual leaders and the imams of our religious places, and refuse to kick him out,” Shazia said

After the attack on her nephew, she said, the villagers came to their home and pleaded with them to forgive the cleric, Moeed Shah, who had fled the area.

“They all came to our home and they know we are poor and he is an imam and they said we should forgive him but we won’t,” Shazia said. She said her father, Muhimman’s grandfather, refused.

Shah has yet to be arrested, even though the assault was filmed by several village boys who broke down the door to the washroom and frightened Shah away as he tired to rape Muhimman.

Police say they are investigating and a charge has been filed, but Shah is a fugitive. Some of the neighbors near the mosque said police are not searching vigorously for him. They seemed angry but also resigned to the fact that he would not be jailed.

Muhimman’s aunt was inconsolable.

“Such a beast should not be spared at all,” Shazia said.

Source : https://apnews.com/8fe530dc76beb1893b3b52af88cf99dd

An intoxicated 18-year-old girl agreed to go home with a 22-year-old man she met at a nightclub, unaware that he then "offered" her to an 18-year-old as an
incentive to let them have sex in his flat.

After he had consensual sex with the girl, Muhammad Nurul Huzaifah Raimy gestured to the youth, a childhood friend of the victim, to have his turn with the oblivious teenager.

Huzaifah then kept silent as two other youths in the flat raped and sexually assaulted her.

On Thursday (Feb 20), Huzaifah, now 23, was sentenced to seven years' jail and six strokes of the cane for abetment of sexual assault.

He admitted he had instigated the girl's friend, now 20, to violate the victim in the early hours of July 20, 2018.

The friend, who is charged with sexual assault by penetration, cannot be named under a gag order to protect the victim's identity.

The cases against him and the other two youths are pending.

Muhammad Danial Sharuddin Muhamad Noor, now 18, is charged with sexual assault by penetration, while Nur Irsyad Danial Mohamad Isa, now 19, is charged with rape, sexual assault by penetration and abetting Sharuddin.

The High Court heard on Thursday that the victim, a part-time waitress, smoked methamphetamine before she went clubbing on the night of July 19, 2018.

By the time the club closed at 3am, she was exhausted and drowsy after spending the night drinking and dancing. Huzaifah asked if she wanted to return to his place and she agreed.

The three other youths were with Huzaifah as he helped the girl walk to a nearby taxi stand.

Huzaifah, who lived with his grandparents, knew that the girl's friend, then a full-time national serviceman, lived alone in a one-room flat. Huzaifah offered to let him have sex with the girl in return for the youth allowing him to use his flat.

The friend had reservations initially as he did not want the girl to see his face, but agreed eventually.

At the flat, the three youths looked on while Huzaifah had sex with the girl, who was drifting in and out of sleep.

Huzaifah then called out to the friend to indicate it was his turn.

After allegedlly carrying out a sexual act on her, the youth left the flat.

The other two then allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, who was jolted awake when one of them pulled her hair.

After the duo fled the scene, the girl rebuked Huzaifah for allowing his friends to take advantage of her. He left after she said she was going to call the police.

When her friend returned later, she told him what the others had done to her, unaware of his role in the episode.

All four were eventually arrested. Huzaifah tried to persuade the victim not to implicate him and even offered to pay for her silence.

She refused, telling him in a text message: "I'm sorry. All of you played with my dignity."

She was a bright and wacky kid but that's all changed.

She kept it buried for 22 years. She tried to report an incident in 1997 but she was disbelieved and felt let down by them.

'She had to cope with feelings of self-loathing and shame. The feelings never left her and haunt her on a daily basis.

'She knows now they were using, grooming and manipulating her for their own purposes and she has to live with that for the rest of her life.'

The other woman suffers from PTSD, depression and bulimia.

Speaking after the predators were jailed, Judge Geoffrey Marson described their actions as disgusting and degrading and said the sentences were severe to discourage other potential groomers.

He also described how the men convicted by Operation Tendersea targeted girls because of their vulnerability and created a relationship of trust that allowed 'predatory men to perpetrate gross sexual abuse for their own perverted gratification'.

He said: 'They were planned offences by a large group of Asian men.

'It is likely many of these girls will never recover from the abuse they suffered.'

Judge Marson described the grooming of the girls as 'insiduous and persistent'.

He said the girls were controlled by violence, or the threat of violence against themselves and their families.

He said the jury in this trial heard evidence of one of the victims going missing and returning home 'heavily under the influence of alcohol or drugs', sometimes naked on her lower half and with injuries.

She was raped by every defendant in this case, often when she was too drunk to be capable of consenting to sexual activity and sometimes with other people present.

The judge said she was raped by Usman Ali in his car, who was 'rough and aggressive' and left her in tears, while Abdul Majid raped her numerous times, often threatening to not take her home unless she had sex with him.

Judge Marson told Majid: 'You raped her as the price for taking her home. You repeatedly abused her for your own sexual gratification.'

The judge said the second victim was regularly plied with drugs and alcohol 'in order to facilitate the gross sexual abuse by the older men'.

Judge Marson said she was indecently assaulted and raped by Gul Riaz, who plied her with vodka at her father's flat.

The victims told the court how they continue to be affected by the actions of the men.

Ali, 34, of Huddersfield, was jailed for eight years after being found guilty of two offences of rape against one victim.

Riaz, 43, also of Huddersfield, was sentenced to 15 years after being found guilty of rape and two indecent assaults against one girl and rape against the other.

Banaras Hussain, 39, of Shipley, was jailed for nine and a half years after being found guilty of raping one of the schoolgirls.

Abdul Majid, 36, of Huddersfield, was sentenced to 11 years after being found guilty of raping one victim twice.

A 36-year-old Huddersfield man was sentenced to eight years after being found guilty of rape, while a sixth, 30 and also from Huddersfield, was jailed for four years for raping one of the girls.

Meanwhile, a seventh man, a 37-year-old from Huddersfield, will be sentenced tomorrow after he was found guilty of raping one girl.

DCI Richard McNamara of Kirklees District, West Yorkshire Police said after the verdict: 'The sentences handed down to these men today reflect the depravity of their actions and I hope it will bring some comfort to their victims to see them jailed.

'Their actions in targeting and sexually abusing these very young and vulnerable girls were utterly despicable and I am very pleased the courts have recognised this and put them behind bars for a number of years.

'Operation Tendersea should send a very clear message that the Police and our Partners at Kirklees will not hesitate to pursue those who sexually abuse children and we will do all we can to seek justice for the victims, no matter when, or how long ago the abuse took place.

'I would urge anyone who may have been the victim of child sexual abuse in Kirklees or elsewhere who has not contacted us to come forwards.'

An NSPCC spokesperson said: 'These men groomed and preyed on vulnerable teenagers, treating these young girls as nothing more than objects during sexual abuse offences which took place over a number of years.

'Each of them caused untold damage to the lives of their victims, who suffered horrendous experiences at their hands.

'We hope the girls are all receiving all the support they need, and we urge anyone who has experienced sexual abuse to speak out and seek support.'

On Tuesday, the court heard from prosecutor Kate Batty who stated that the victims were deliberately targeted by older men and had been made to feel special when they gave them alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.

It was said that the abuse often took place in cars, hotels and flats, including in a flat belonging to a man who was 'involved with drugs and had a gun'.

Mrs Batty said the girls would 'regularly be out of it' with drink and drugs and added that the first victim had been introduced to older men by a school friend.

'She didn't know their names half of the time or she would know only their nickname. She was threatened, she was spoken down to, she was intimidated and she was assaulted.

'She was frightened and she saw absolutely no way out of this life.'

She added that the youngster had been 'utterly corrupted' and that she had been 'made to believe she had no choice' but to continue with the lifestyle she had found herself in.

The victim's family had tried hard to keep her safe and had sought help from both police and social services on multiple occasions.

Mrs Batty added: Back then, perhaps the authorities didn't have the understanding that they now have about grooming and child sexual exploitation.

'Social services eventually told [the girl's] family that [she] must love it if she keeps going back.'

'The final straw for her was when she was thrown out of a car with her trousers round her ankles, having had sex with two or three of the men in the car - she can't remember[how many].

'She was drunk and drugged. She was 15 years old', Mrs Batty said.

Michael Quinn, from the CPS, said: 'At the heart of this case are the two victims. They have suffered immensely as a result of their childhood abuse.

We would like to acknowledge their great courage in coming forward to assist the investigation and then to support the prosecution.

'I sincerely hope the convictions of their abusers will go some way to helping these young women to rebuild their lives. Our thoughts remain with them.'

After the rape, the two accused left their phone number with the woman, which helped the police trace the culprits.

The incident took place on Sunday at Karnal when the woman and her husband were travelling in a bus while returning from Panipat, reported the Indian Express.

After receiving a call from a relative who wanted to give them something, the two got off the bus near the toll plaza to wait. The woman then went to the washroom while her husband waited outside.

As she came out of the washroom, she found the two men standing outside. According to the FIR lodged with Karnal Police, one of the men threatened her with a knife while the two took her to a nearby underpass and raped her.

According to the report, two men have been arrested so far and have been identified as one who sold snacks at a shop near the toll plaza and another who is a security guard at the checking point.

The couple hails from Punjab and were visiting relatives in Panipat when they got off the bus around 11 pm on Sunday night.

https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/2-men...7837-2020-02-19

SINGAPORE - A man reoffended barely five months after serving 14 years behind bars when he tried to rape a tourist in her room at Hilton Singapore hotel.

After fleeing from the hotel in Orchard Road, Isa Ahmad followed a second female tourist into a lift at the nearby Tang Plaza later that day and robbed her of her mobile phone.

The 54-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty on Wednesday (Oct 23) to one count each of robbery and attempted aggravated rape.

The court heard that Isa had earlier been convicted of multiple counts of robbery.

In June 1994, he was sentenced to eight years' corrective training (CT) and 12 strokes of the cane for the offences.

CT is a prison regime for repeat offenders without the usual one-third remission for good behaviour. The maximum period is 14 years.

He continued committing robbery after his release and was last sentenced in October 2002 to 14 years of preventive detention (PD) with the maximum 24 strokes of the cane.

PD is only for repeat offenders who are above 30 years old. Compared to CT, PD involves a longer period of incarceration, lasting up to 20 years.

He did not learn his lesson when he was finally released in 2016, and targeted the two women on March 12, 2017.

Isa, who worked as a housekeeper at Orchard Hotel Singapore, found the first victim, a 27-year-old woman, attractive and followed her into Hilton Singapore hotel.

They entered the same lift and by using her key card, the woman gained access to the 16th storey, where her room was located.

Just as she entered her room at around 11.30am, Isa grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth with his towel.

The pair struggled and he dragged the woman by her hair to the bed.

He then used his free hand to press a pillow against her face until she could not breathe momentarily.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Gregory Gan said the woman managed to kick Isa and when she was able to speak, told him someone was returning to the room although she was staying there alone.

Alarmed, Isa got out of the room when he heard this and the woman alerted hotel security. But before they could arrive, he knocked on her door and asked her for his towel when she opened it.

She immediately closed the door, called security again and the police were alerted at 12.50pm. She went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where she was found with injuries including a bruised right elbow.

Later that day at around 5.30pm, Isa followed a 48-year-old woman into a lift at Tang Plaza before using a second towel to try restrain her by covering her neck and mouth.

She struggled and he managed to take her mobile phone worth about $700. The woman dashed out when the lift doors opened and called the police soon after.

Officers managed to trace Isa's identity and arrested him outside Orchard Hotel Singapore the next day.

On Wednesday, DPP Gan urged District Judge Victor Yeo to call for a report to assess Isa's suitability for a second PD, stressing that he "is a danger to society".

Defence lawyer K.V. Sudeep Kumar asked for Isa not to be given PD and pleaded for his client to be given 12 years' jail instead. He also said that Isa has erectile dysfunction.

Judge Yeo called for a report on the suitability of PD for Isa, who is now in remand and expected to be sentenced on Nov 12.

In a statement, Hilton Singapore told The Straits Times: "The safety, security and well-being of our guests are of paramount importance and we continue to make every effort to ensure all practices and standards are in line with strict safety and security regulations."

Offenders convicted of attempted aggravated rape can be jailed for up to 10 years and caned.

Isa cannot be caned, as he is over 50 years old.
