Weaker Yen against RM, cheaper recon cars?

Hi guys, I'm writing this to spark an intellectual discussion among consumers amid an environment of exorbitant imported car prices. I do have an eye on the automotive industry as a whole but yet I fail to understand why hasn't imported recon cars from Japan specifically seen the right momentum of downward adjustments in prices?

This query came about during my recent visits to recon car dealers to gauge the impact on car prices due to weakness in our RM vs USD which I assumed to be the standard forex incurred in all imports of cars to Malaysia but to my surprise, I found out that it's not so. Transactional currency is often against the country that we import from [i.e. Japanese recon cars are transacted in Yen, mind you, new cars may not as importers such as UMW Holdings (Toyota) and Tan Chong Motor (Nissan) can choose to import in USD or Yen]. This begs the question, has imported recon cars from Japan come down in value?

Take a look at the following chart.

It took us about RM4.02 to get 100 Yen back in 2012 and now it only takes us RM3.01 to get 100 Yen, representing a bout a 25% discount.. Now let's do some math..

Say we import a Japanese recon car in Yen at market value of RM10k in 2012, technically the same car of similar spec should cost 25% lower to RM7.5k but that's not all. Let's not forget about duties and taxes.

Now, now.. Importing a car includes paying for AP, import duty, excise duty and sales tax which has now been replaced by GST.

So let's compare the calculation:

A simple scenario as follows suggest a similar quantum of reduction in car prices as Yen become cheaper but the % changes as pricier cars are being imported to maximise the standard RM10k AP. Has prices of Japanese recon cars fall by at least 15%-20% since 2012?

If not, then this begs the question:

Is our recon car market governed by the invisible hand (demand & supply) or are the consumers being patronised by a cartel of profiteering importers?

Let me know your thoughts, I'm just writing from a point of a consumer.. Appreciate any correction to my thoughts or calculation which might be wrong. Cheers
