RM2,500 fine for keris intimidation

MIRI: A foreign labourer who threatened a security guard using a keris was fined RM2,500 in default two years’ jail by a magistrate’s court here yesterday.

The sentence was passed by Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie after considering several factors including the accused guilty plea and appeal, facts of the case, the seriousness of the offence as well as public interest.

Kadek Buky Indra Kusuma, 25, from Indonesia was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term up to seven years or fine or both upon conviction.

According to facts of the case, the accused criminally intimidated security officer Augustin Sujang Seli, 24, by threatening to kill him with a keris.

He committed the offence at 5.05am on September 6 at the security post of a plywood factory in Kuala Baram.

Kadek who was not represented pleaded for leniency, saying that this was his first offence and the matter was due to a misunderstanding between him and the complainant.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted.

Oxford University professor says aliens

Aliens are already here on Earth, breeding with us and spawning new generations of alien-human hybrids to tackle climate change and nuclear weapons, an Oxford University professor claims.

Oxford Oriental Institute professor, Dr Young-hae Chi initially outlined his theory at a 2012 Ammach Conference in a lecture he called "Alien Abduction and the Environmental Crisis".

He elaborated on his comments in an interview with The Oxford Student last week.

Ammach is a British group founded to help people who claim to have had some kind of alien encounter.

The Oxford Student website reported that Chi's presentation cited American "abduction researcher" Dr David Jacobs, who has argued that aliens are colonising the Earth by producing the hybrids.

Jacobs says second-generation hybrids are now living among us, we just haven't noticed them.
They walk among us

Chi said the arrival of the aliens comes as a response to the big problems humanity is facing, "climate change and nuclear weapons in particular".

He has since written a book in Korean called Alien Visitations and the End of Humanity.

He said they come in four different types, with insect-like aliens at the top of the hierarchy, ruling over small aliens, tall and bold aliens and even aliens with scales and snake eyes.
We have them worried

Where they come from, he is not able to say, but Chi belives their sudden enthusiasm for getting closer and breeding with us, comes from the fact they share the same biosphere and are concerned at the effect human existence is having on the habitat.

“If they are far, they shouldn’t be concerned about us. I don’t think they are from far away, they are just next to us, we can’t see them," Chi said.

'Our perception of the world is limited.'

"We can use an analogy of fish, which can think and perceive things only in the way they can and humans also perceive only in the way we can, so our perception of the world is limited by our organs.”

Chi said the aliens may want to breed with us because they find our DNA valuable in the preservation their own species and to also help create a new kind of species that can cope with future climate conditions.

He also said the hybrids were apparently "of a very high intelligence" so may be future leaders of the new species that will be living on the planet.

“They come not for the sake of us, but for the sake of them, their survival, (but their survival is actually our survival as well) the survival of the entire biosphere. That is where I progressed in developing my theory and I’m still looking for more evidence to support my view,” he said.

MIRI: A total of 407 natives have been rendered homeless from the Uma Bawang longhouse fire in the resettlement scheme near Bakun Dam.

The fire started at about 6pm on Monday (April 15) in the longhouse located in the Sungai Asap Resettlement Scheme some 50km from the Bakun Dam in central Sarawak.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said 42 households had been affected, but added that there were no fatalities.

"There was an elderly woman who suffered burns on her body," it said in an update Tuesday (April 16).

The victims are seeking temporary shelter in neighbouring longhouses and in the Sungai Asap community hall.

They are awaiting further help from the state authorities.

The longhouse is one of 15 resettlement longhouses built in 1996 to house the natives uprooted by the Bakun Dam construction.

Sarawak Bomba firefighters from the nearest town of Bintulu needed two hours to reach the site due to the distance. Bintulu is 250km away from Sungai Asap.

Sarawak Bomba said the exact amount of losses has not been determined, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Uma Bawang has some 120 families living adjacent to each other.

SIBU: The central business district (CBD) area here is now equipped with 74 close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor criminal activities.

According to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain, the facilities are linked to the police’s control room.

Asked if there are plans to make use of the existing cctvs to curb littering, she replied: “Not yet for the time being due to CCTVs limitation.

Meanwhile, Rogayah encouraged the people to complement the council’s effort on recycling to help green up the town.

She said the council has set up recycle centres for the public to dump their recyclable items.

“By recycling, we can reduce the volume of wastes going to our landfill, thus prolonging the life-span of the landfills,” she explained.

“The council will continue with its effort to heighten awareness of the importance of recycling.

“We will continue to engage with the local communities such as Taman Seduan, Pulau Li Hua, Taman Belatok, Taman Apollo, Kolej Laila Taib to facilitate the collection of recycleable items from house to house every first and 15th day of the month.”

Meanwhile, based on a 2010 survey carried out in major towns in Sarawak, the composition of waste included food perishables (35 per cent), paper (19 per cent), soft plastic (11 per cent), hard plastic (five per cent), garden waste (five per cent), disposable diapers (five per cent), glass (three per cent) and wood (two per cent), while the rest comprise metal and construction wastes.
