Questions on upgrading Acer Aspire 5500
I have an Acer Aspire 5500 series laptop. To be exact is the Aspire 5502NWXMi.

Specs are:

Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache)
14.1" LCD
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCI Express/64MB VRAM
80GB HDD
Slot-loading DVD-Dual (Support DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+-RW)
512MB DDR2 (support dual-channel)
802.11b/d wireless LAN

The laptop has been very slow during startup for quite some time. Instead of reformatting, i have done a full scan and defragmentation on the drive with XP O/S installed. These steps did not help much.

I am thinking of adding a 2GB RAM, upgrading drivers (if there are any, currently using the ones from acer website) and reformatting.

Is adding the RAM a worthy move or should i just get a new laptop? The reason i ask is because of the dual-core processors.

I probably will use this for some light gaming, watching movies, recording audio/video (webcam). The main use would be for research work that uses various kinds of engineering softwares.

Please do share some opinions here.
