Changing normal light switch to dimmer

Got a question to ask.

I would like to install a chandelier at my new living room. I told my contractor to change the lighting switch to dimmer so that i can control the brightness of the chandelier.

To my surprise the contractor told me additional wiring is required for the dimmer. Is it true? The last time i did the dimmer no additional wiring requied at my old house.

Anyone here can share you experience and knowledge? Thanks
