Currently looking for a live band to perform at UUM(Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah) for our event "EON D'Unforgotten Cultural Night 2013 - Shadow Of The Moon 月 · 影夜" .
The event date is on October 1st and venue is in DEWAN MAS(biggest hall in UUM).
And the event theme is the mooncake festival.

UNFAIR DISTRIBUTION amongst Malays: Mara loan withdrawn from 17-yr-old son of PKR leader

The withdrawal of a Mara study loan from the son of a PKR leader proves that even among Malays, not all are treated fairly, let alone equally.

Syed Hamid Ali, the Batu Pahat PKR chief, told the press that Mara had cancelled the overseas study loan extended to his 17-year-old son Akmal Hakim because Syed was registered as an 'Arab' at birth.

But that may be because the 69-year-old Syed Hamid was born before the country's independence from British rule in 1957 and the definition of what a Malay is had not yet been inserted into the Federal Constitution.

Mara or Majilis Amanah Rakyat is a government agency, formed in 1966 under the Rural and National Development Ministry to aid, train, and guide Bumiputra (Malays and other indigenous Malaysians) in the areas of business and industry. It operates several colleges and provides both local and overseas study loans.

Targeting opposition leaders

Even so, Syed said that would be mere formality as his son's birth certificate clearly states that his father is Malay. The PKR leader smells a rat and suspects political persecution.

"Our neighbour registered my birth so he must have assumed that since my name is Syed, I am an Arab. I registered my son's birth myself and in his birth certificate, it states that his father is Malay," said Syed.

Syed points out that if his 'Malay' credentials were not proper, how could he qualify for Amanah Saham Bumiputera units, which are only available to Malay and the indigenous groups.

“I wasn't so encouraging when my son wanted to apply for a Mara scholarship, but he's just a kid so I didn't want to weigh him down with political matters. Now this happens," said Syed, whose brother is Syed Husin Ali, the reowed author and former PKR deputy president.

“He feels persecuted and is distressed. They are victimising a child. He has done nothing wrong. He is qualified. Why should his future be jeopardised over this bureaucratic matter?"

Offer made in May, cancelled in June

According to Syed, his son received the cancellation letter via courier on June 23. The letter states that one or both parents of a Mara study loan recipient must be Malay or bumiputera.

"As such, the offer made to you for the overseas study programme is cancelled as you do not meet the requirement," said the letter.

The offer was made in May under the special convertible study loan programme open to 2011 SPM graduates, whereby loans can be converted into scholarships if the recipients do well in their studies.

According to the terms, Akmal Hakim was to get a loan to take up a business degree at an Ivy League university or any American university of the same standard.

Mara had asked him to register at INTI International University in Nilai, Negri Sembilan, for the preparatory course on June 28.

“If he is not qualified, why did they even call him in for an interview?” Syed Hamid asked.

Appeal but no sound yet from Mara

Syed Hamid also revealed that he had gone to the Mara office in Kuala Lumpur to appeal the matter on June 25, and spoke to deputy director, Nor Azwa Hassan.

“I asked her, 'Don't I sound and look Malay?'. She asked me to write an appeal letter and that they will be in touch. She said Mara will send someone to the house. Maybe to check if we eat with chopsticks,” he said.

Akmal has since emailed Nor Azwa to make a personal appeal, but till now, Mara has not replied.

“I've put the letter up on my Facebook to seek opinion and advice, and will take action either legally or in other forms based on the advice,” warned Syed Hamid.

Hey guys...i need some advice here...preferably from seniors or people working in these two fields

u see, i hav two different offers...1 is matriks accounting and another is utm civil engineering diploma...

i want to ask.... if matriks accounting high chance to get into um or usm?

what are the problems faced by accountants today? i heard that fresh graduates have to work until the wee hours in the morning auditing?
hows the life of the accountant? how to work the way to the top?

and for civil engineering
hows the job like? whats the everyday work faced by a civil engineer? i know almost everything is civil engineering...building bridges, houses, tunnels, buildings etc...how does civil engineering fare among other engineering courses in terms of popularity, job prospects, reputation?

and any civil engineering graduates from utm can explain to me the course in detail? pls thx

ps: i'm under jpa pidn...i'm bonded when i graduate...where does accountants and engineers work under jpa? do we sometimes get a unrelated job?

sry for the wall of questions...but i really can't decide

although i got good results for my 3 science subjects in spm...i did not really enjoyed studying them...sometimes i think a lot about the physics concept and took a long time to digest the facts.....whereas for accounting i find it slightly easier to understand than physics...

so how?? advice needed seniors, accountants and engineers i need your say on this matter
