Religious figure jailed for insulting minorities

COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan court on Thursday (March 28) sentenced an influential Buddhist monk to four years' hard labour for fanning sectarian hatred against the island's minority Muslim population.

The Colombo High Court found Galagodaatte Gnanasara had hurt Muslims by making disparaging remarks about Islam at a 2016 press conference.

"The monk was sentenced to four years of hard labour and fined 100,000 rupees (US$330)," a court official said. "He was sent to prison to start serving his sentence."

Gnanasara has been accused of instigating violence against Muslims in the Buddhist-majority country, where roughly 10 per cent of the 22 million people follow Islam.

He has close ties with Wirathu, an extremist monk based in Myanmar.

This is not the first time that Gnanasara, who once enjoyed powerful political ties, has been in jail.

In 2018, he was sentenced to six years for intimidating the wife of a missing cartoonist and contempt of court but was freed nine months later after former president Maithripala Sirisena pardoned him.

Ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa later made Gnanasara the head of a panel to recommend legal reforms to ensure religious harmony.

At the time, opposition lawmaker Shanakiyan Rasamanickam described Gnanasara's committee as "the definition of irony".

Many Health Ministry purchases did not follow SOP during Covid-19 pandemic, admits Dr Adham

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba says he will cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission over claims of corruption involving the procurement of medical equipment and medicine during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to a Sinar Harian report, the former health minister admitted that he received complaints about the matter, indicating that the act was committed at administration level.

During the pandemic, Dr Adham said there were many processes for procurement that were not going through standard procedure and there was confusion when implementing this.

"We used emergency procurement procedures when there was an immediate need to complete many things and to accelerate the work – there are things that need to be ordered first and there are things that need deposit payments.

"All of this was done without going through normal processes and there are things that I know of while I was minister at that time advising them.

"As minister, I took care of the policy and its implementation which was conducted by the administration, and I listed down all the implementation needs that they wanted.

"I am ready to cooperate with MACC. There is no doubt as that was for emergency use for the first time," he said to reporters after witnessing the exchange of a memorandum of understanding between National Institute of Biotechnology Malaysia, Solution Biologics Sdn Bhd and Cansino Biologics Inc.

On Tuesday (May 24) MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki had said that there were elements of corruption uncovered involving the procurement of medical equipment and medicine during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said among instances of abuse of power in diverting relief aid, fraud related to falsified medical protective equipment and the bribery of enforcement officers when enforcing the movement control order.

KUALA LUMPUR: No action will be taken against shot putter Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli and his coach, Mohd Faizol Harun, for reporting late to the call room at the Tokyo Paralympic Games last August leading to their disqualification.

The incident cost Ziyad the gold medal and a possible new world record.

The Malaysian Para Athletics Association (POPM) said today it had no intention of pursuing the matter against both men.

Instead, it said, it stood in high esteem of Ziyad and his coach’s sense of accountability, and expressed the hope that they be given the opportunity to compete in other future events.

“We will always remind the team management, including the coaches and athletes, to take note of the date and registration time, either before a championship begins or when the championship has begun,” it said in a statement.

On Friday, the youth and sports ministry said the internal investigation committee formed to investigate the incident and provide closure to the duo’s punctuality controversy, had concluded that they failed to show proof that they had arrived at the call room on time.

Ziyad, 31, the Rio 2016 gold medallist, was classified as “Did not start” (DNS) although he was allowed to proceed with his throws, which included a new world mark of 17.94m in the F20 ((intellectual disability) event.

However, he was stripped of the gold medal following an objection from the Ukrainian team, whose athlete Maksym Koval was declared the winner with a throw of 17.34m, erasing the world record of 17.29m set by Ziyad at the London World Para Athletics Championship in 2017.
