Porn and Online Gambling Sites Blocked by MCMC

While officially blocking sites with content deemed to be politically damaging to the current government such as Sarawak Report or The Malaysian Insider is a new policy, Malaysia's Commission and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued blocking directives for porn and gambling sites in the past.

Running tests with TOR Open Observatory Network Interference (OONI) Probes against Citizen Lab test lists provide interesting insights backed by test data to reveal which sites are blocked due to DNS blocking or redirection.

So far it seems that it is quite a limited list, and hundreds of porn and gambling sites are still accessible on TMNet networks. MCMC here has probably done the right thing here, as consumers needing better control over adult and gambling sites are better off with dedicated software and services such as TMNet's own iShield

The following sites were detected as blocked by daily OONI web connectivity tests run for a few days. Some additional checks were done, to make sure that they were redirecting to MCMC's notice on TMNet network.

Porn
That major porn sites are blocked by ISPs has been known for some time, the tests also show that a few obscure ones are also blocked, now it's confirmed with OONI web connectivity tests.

http://adultfriendfinder.com
http://www.ashemaletube.com
http://www.hustler.com
http://www.livejasmin.com
http://www.sex.com
http://www.worldsex.com
http://xhamster.com
http://xvideos.com
http://youjizz.com

Online Gambling
Only a few gambling sites on the tests-lists were blocked, but the following were detected to redirect to MCMC's standard censorship notice.

http://www.belmont.ag
http://www.betfair.com
http://www.carnivalcasino.com
http://www.spinpalace.com
US Airforce, doesn't resolve on Unifi
An interesting observation on TMNet network was that DNS lookup fails with the ISP DNS service for US Air Force sites. This could simply be a configuration error, but worth checking against data on other networks.

http://www.af.mil
http://www.usafa.af.mil

If there any other sites that you know that are blocked not on that list, let us at Sinar Project team know here, so we can add them to the tests lists for Malaysia.

We need more people to help run probes on different networks and also test lists.

Learn more about running probes in Malaysia at Sinar Project site.

Using Python & Open Data to expose 1MDB

Here's how you can learn to make a difference with your code. You can learn and use your skills for the public good, or commonly known as civic tech.

Sinar Project has a public API as well as open data on politically exposed persons and organizations in Malaysia, that can be accessed to do mundane things finding out the twitter or email account of your elected representative or more interesting things such as mapping network of persons of interests.

In this ipython notebook example, we learn a few useful libraries that are practical for a lot of web applications to uncover who is 1MDB Official 2 as described in the US Department of Justice filings.

* requests a module to make http requests to get data from websites and REST APIs
* Working with JSON data
* dateutil a really useful library for working with dates

For those working with data, ipython or jupyter notebooks is an awesome tool used by data scientists to work with and visualize data with code in research paper/document style which is more familiar to most people than code editors

ipython notebook example on github

If you're interested to chat on civic tech and learning to code python, do join our friendly on-line communities on Slack (send an email to team@sinarproject.org for an invite) or on FreeNode IRC at #sinar

I'll try answer here as well any questions on civic tech or how the code works in the examples.

Will share more, notebook examples, including doing graph visualizations of Malaysian MPs.

44.5% of sexual crimes are against children

In light of the UK pedophile news, here are some worrying statistics to show that it is not an isolated case.

This averages out to about 5 cases every day of sexual crimes against minors.

This was from 2014 sexual crimes statistics, which means likely that up to 2,000 more kids were reported for sexual abuse last year.

The reason many are not aware of this is that since 2009, PDRM gave directive that crime statistics such as this should only be provided for specific academic and research use only and not to be published publicly such as on websites.

Source: Parliamentary Question

March 2016 Parliamentary Replies Now Online

Over 1000 more parliamentary replies for oral and written questions from March 2016 Parliamentary Session are now on-line and searchable at pardocs.sinarproject.org

This is a public repository of thousands of official replies by government to MPs, containing information often not available to public. The information was available before but only as hard copy to parliamentarians.

If it hasn't been asked, and you want to know answer from gov, you can actually email your MPs to ask in parliament, they are your representatives after all.

The data is scanned and the splitting isn't always perfect, if you would like to help tag the documents for research, better descriptions or identify wrongly scanned/split documents, please email us at team@sinarproject.org for an editor account.

http://pardocs.sinarproject.org/search#c7-...1&c5=2016-03-31

Credits:

Documents made available thanks to scans made available by the team at the office of MP Serdang Ong Kian Ming.

Source code for the PDF split
https://github.com/leowmjw/parliamentMY-QA-blast

Source for document hosting platform:
https://github.com/Sinar/documents.buildout/

#NetMerdeka: Techies-CMA amendment YouTube on Air

Malaysia could soon approve several outrageous bills that would impose criminal penalties for everyday use of the internet. Over the course of the next week, our parliament will consider amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Sedition Act, among other laws. These amendments would grant wide new powers to the telecoms regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and could also restrict the use of bail under the criminal code. The amended laws could make Internet Service Providers criminally liable for content passing over their networks and could lead to some websites getting permanently blocked. Users with websites & blogs deemed to be news or political may also be required to register their sites with provisions possibly similar to Singapore’s restrictive on-line media laws.

Listen to, interact, ask questions and share your opinions and concerns to our on-line panel of local and regional tech practitioners this Wednesday 9pm on-line on Youtube on Air.

Watch the recorded session on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a933g7N8KJA

* Would the new rule will have impact on investment?
* Do you believe that more liabilities on intermediary will have impact on operations of companies?
* What would be the implication to the end users when these rules is implemented?
* Will it be possible to enforce registration of bloggers and publishers if they are using VPN’s or other proxies to publish content anonymously?
* If a site is outside of Malaysia can the Malaysian government request a take down?

Moderator: Ng Swee Meng - civic tech developer, Sinar Project

Panelists:

Shawn Tan, Chip Engineer, Aeste
A.
Mugged in SS17, Subang Jaya

Just a few hours ago, while walking home from work from SS15 to SS17 (just 10 min walk), 3 young guys looked like college kids, one was Chinese looking, but didn't get clear look at the others after getting out of a white Myvi. Police told me, that it's like this now. No longer guys on motorbikes, but could be any type of car and different ethnicities.

They picked me clean, bag with laptop, wallet, keys.. everything. They were heading to Shah Alam on Federal Highway, heading to Klang which was last report from the phone before they turned it off.

My bag is unique, it's a black Chrome Messenger, it should be easy to spot, not sold locally and unfamiliar brand.

The logo on the bag:

The bag and my laptop:

The laptop shouldn't be that common either, it's a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon.

I'm not hurt, but wanted to share with everybody that it's not safe to walk in suburbs, and that snatch thieves can be from different ethnicities and are now using cars, not just motorbikes.

The most frustrating thing about this is that, it's no exaggeration. Our streets are unsafe. The police even told me that you shouldn't walk, but take car. Earlier today, the police told me that somebody else also had their car windows smashed in SS15.

It really sucks to be working 70-80hr weeks with no weekends and then get mugged, even more so when my work is actually for NGOs including anti-corruption work. I was walking because like others, I can't afford a second car. The laptop was from funds in support of my work http://sinarproject.org so I could do more, including crunching data while travelling. Not for personal use.

If you see, know or hear anybody with this bag or items trying to sell them off, please report it to Subang Jaya police station 03 56332222. I'd really like to see these bastards caught.
LPI Level 1 Training in July

http://www.iosn.net/asean-3/countries/mala...ux-tot-malaysia

It's partially supported by IOSN ASEAN+3 and Open University Malaysia, so the rates are quite low for a 2 week training with an experienced trainer.

This training is based using the open content (free to copy) materials including slides and manuals. If you're looking to provide your own low cost internal or external training this course is quite good, as you are encouraged to copy and reuse the materials.

Why people still using Red Hat 9?

This question has been bugging me lately.

Why does there seem to be a lot of people still using and posting questions regarding RH9?

Are they new installs? If so why was RH9 chosen?

Are they legacy servers that you were told to look after and maintain?

Is it because there is some proprietary software that only runs on RH9?
