Travel to Vancouver, USA - Pacific NW

Hello all,

There are 7 of us. My families + my 10 months old son (by then) will be traveling to the Canada & US or to the West (Ang Mo country, some people like to call it that way) for the first time. I am a bit worry, not exactly because of my son, but what to expect there. I think, the culture is somewhat difference from the countries we had visited in Asia. Plus, it is indeed our first time in Ang Mo country. Haha. I'd never to been to Europe.

1- We will be traveling with ANA and United Airlines throughout the flight itinerary. Mostly, ANA only the local US flight is UA.
2- We will be visiting Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco for about 2 weeks time.
3- Our first flight arrived Vancouver
4- We decided to take Amtraks from Vancouver to Seattle
5- Then we take flight from Seattle to San Francisco
6- Our return flight is from San Francisco.
7- Each destination, we allocated at least 3 to 4 days.
8- I really find the Tipping very bothersome in US. I hate tipping because I find it is a complicated. Tip less, kena hitam muka. Tip more, I felt I rugi. Haha. Of course, in some scenario, tipping is required when one felt the service being offered touched one's heart. This, I could understand. But not the US Tipping style.
9- We don't intend to drive.
10- I really need advice on Malaysian's Perspective on Accommodation in Seattle and San Francisco. I had checked out AirBnB and I really find the space and price acceptable, compare to Hotel. Yet, AirBnB listing usually at neighborhood than downtown. What you guys think?
11- Trip is on mid February 2018. A few days before CNY

I couldn't be sure right now, whether I had poured out all my questions here. I will continue to add at later time, after each discussion.
I welcome any constructive tips and your experience. Feel free to pitch in, as long as they are related.

Thanks you.

NOTE: I had read up [WTA] Travel to Las Vegas, USA, Need tips and advices (Travel) by @kapalterbang_737.

Hello all,

I need your experience and expertise for my issue.

I am trying to flash my Used D-Link (TMNet) DIR-615 G2 with OpenWRT as I wish to access to VLAN Features which I couldn't with DD-WRT. According to DD-WRT Documentation, DIR-615 G2 has no VLAN Features. Hence, I wish to try my luck with OpenWRT.

I follow the OpenWRT Guide at KLSeet.com.

However, right after I completed the first flash of DIR-615 D, I couldn't access the Router Web. Also, the Power button of my router appeared Orange in colour, than normal Yellow. I believe the Flash had bricked the Router so I re-flashed back the Router Manufacture Software through the Emergency technique. Again, I tried to flash the first step through the 'Operator' web feature of DIR-615's Web GUI.

No luck, either.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks you,

Bandwidth Limit & VLan

Hello all,

I am very much appreciate your time and effort to read my dilemma with my home networking issue.

I wish to create a separate Network with limited (speed) and shared Internet from my exiting Home Network. Some sort of Guest Network. In my case, Guest Wi-Fi Network at Location C with illustration below.

Location A, B and C are connected with Cat5E Cable and all situated within well below 100m length.
Yellow Line suggested how Location A and B connect.
Red Line suggest 2 Way to connect, either Directly to Main A or Location B.

Location A sited the Main Modem+Router which it connected to phone line.
Location B hosted the second AP Wifi Router, which it was routed through a Gigabit Switch.
Location C is the new Location, in question or dilemma on how to connect effectively with less-cost for a controlled "Guest" Wi-Fi environment - Firewalled Network (VLAN) and Limited Speed.

I consider myself new to this Network Concept, LAN within LAN.
If I am not wrong, in my case, it is known as VLAN. Creating a Virtual LAN inside the main LAN, to ensure limited access and to protect Main LAN from external forces.

Topic: VLAN and Limited Speed at Location C

Before I go through my solution, I had both search at Lowyat and googled for a cost-effective solution.
Some articles/forums adviced for Managed Switch or Related Hardware, Software Solution for a PC-Always-On. Also, I stumbled across this (below) Lowyat Forum Article and lucky, I did.

QUOTE

Topic: Bandwidth limiting, Which router to get? (Router Configuration)
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3079838
-> Mostly discussed with QoS feature of a Router, found in TP-Link and Asus Router.

Solution B (indicate at the Illustration)
Replaced the Red-Circled Giga Switch (Location B) with Asus Router, with VLAN Capability and Bandwidth Control.
At the same time, remove the WIFI G-Router.
Question:
1/ My existing G-Router disable DHCP Server. Devices connected through G-Router, its IP Address are allocated by Main Router at Location A. Shall with new Router Replacement and with VLAN (for Location C), would there be any implication? I want Location B as free as Location A, no limit or VLan. Only at Location C.
2/ My budget for the new Router is around RM300.

Solution A
The Main Router at Location A has no IP-QoS or similar to allow Bandwidth Control, also its VLan is somewhat useless.

What you all think?

Personally, I felt Solution B is logical and also, Location B is nearer to C as it is located in the middle of A and C.
Nevertheless, I was worried about the complication and I wouldn't want to waste my Ringgit - at the end it did not work.

Please share your opinion. Thanks you.

EDIT:
17/02 12:55PM Updated the Illustration to better illustrate Main LAN and VLAN (Lan2).

Plan to Buy Dell from USA

Hello all,

I have plan to purchase Dell Precision M4600, to replace my aging (yet lovely) M1530 this coming months.
In case you wonder why I want to go for M4600. I am looking for a reliable desktop replacement system that play decent in Gaming, yet does not warm my hands. Its double compartment for HDD allows me to install SSD for OS & Quick App, while HDD for Media Storage - no more need to bring external HDD.

The reason I plan to get it from USA is due to its price difference. With similar specs, I could save up to RM1,500 or at least RM1,000, even after I included a USD100 Shipping Cost.

Okay, here is the question I wish to ask.
- Does Dell Laptop purchased from USA are covered (Limited/Accidental) if I imported to Malaysia?
- How much to expect from Custom Duty & Fee?

Thanks in advance, for all your comments/opinions/experience.
Hello all,

I need your suggestion/view with my desktop configuration and planning to make purchase end of this month.

Budget: <1.4K
Purpose: Internet, Video and Gaming (Mostly Online Game: Dungeon Defender, Minecraft and perhaps, Low Mode for BF3, Deus Ex)
Re-use Parts: WD Green 500GB HDD, ATI HD5450 (Bought 5 months ago, for its Dual-Monitor features. Now no use anymore)

Asus P8H67-M (4-Dimm) 16X U-ATX+SATA3.0+S+GL RM329
Pentium G620 RM195
Coolermaster 500W RM169
Kingston PC1333 D3 RM80 (2GBx2)

Total MYR: 773

Plus additional: MYR200 for Casing (Estimate)
And additional: MYR300 for 18.5" or 20" LCD

For now, I may not wish to invest on a decent GC as I just need a replacement desktop for my brother to play some newer multiplayer games. Also, I choose that motherboard as I had plan to upgrade the processor in the future with Ivy Bridge.

Raise Disrepancy with CC Bank?

Hello all,

I had posted an inquiry in the main post but did not get any response so I am trying my luck here.

I made an online purchase (something like a planner) on early Dec 2010. HK E-Tracking confirm the registered parcel had been shipped since 13 December. So far until today, I had yet to receive the parcel.

I had called up the Main Post Office and managed to chat with the Officer In Charged. The officer confirmed that they had not receive the parcel and they said the parcel may lost in transit. I called every 2 days. Until today, still no.

I had contacted the merchant. They had checked with their HK Post but there is not much they can do in terms of tracking the whereabout of the parcel. They asked me to wait for 2 months for the HK Post to fully investigate this matter. 2 months!!!

Bcuz I am paying via CC. Do you think I should raise disrepancy with my Bank?

Hello all,

I am planning to take some course in Database Programming. But I am not really sure which platform I should take.

In terms of any IT/Programming Background, I completed my Degree in E-Commerce and Marketing last year - where I learn SQL Basic and Visual Basic. Few months ago, I started self-study Ms Access - more familiar with Form Design and VB than before. I know it is not much.

Currently, I am working in my family company which is not related to IT.

Any advise on career opportunities for this IT Database Field. Any other advise such as courses I should take and ... are welcome.

Netload.in

Hey,

In case anyone of you guys wondering what is Netload.in?

It is direct-download service that allows user to upload files (up to max 400mb per file) and of course, download files too. The best things about this netload.in compare to rapidshare is that its maximum file size per file. Netload.in clearly allows 400mb (both premium and free user) while Rapidshare only allows <100mb per file (free user, while premium user can download larger file size which hardly to be found). Therefore, less files to copy and paste.

Okay, my question is do anyone of you guys are premium user of Netload.in? If yes, how is your satisfaction or comment towards their service?
