Stray dogs put to sleep after being caught

I came across this article from The Star today, 3 May 2010. Metro Section page M10.

Strays are put to sleep within hours they got caught. It is sad how dogs are being treated like that. If you read the article below, not only stray dogs are put to sleep, even your dog, if they were to be found by the dog-catcher, and no one claim them in a week time, they too will be put to sleep.

Is there any thing we can do to prevent this from happening?

Read the article below (copy paste from The Star):

Anguish over dog’s killing
CYBER CORRIDOR
By OH ING YEEN
ingyeen@thestar.com.my

WHEN dog-catchers took away her 12-year-old dog, Bavani Nadarajah never imagined that it would be the last time she would see her pet.

According to Bavani, the incident happened on Feb 18 in Taman Desa Kenanga, Semenyih, at noon. “Six men came in a white van and caught my dog named Puppy, which I let out of the house for only five minutes so it could ease itself. It does not have a licence.

“The van did not bear any MPKj logo and the dog-catchers did not have any identification.

“The dog-catchers ignored our pleas and told my mum to go to the council to pay the summons if we wanted our dog back,” she said.

However, the worse has yet to come.

Bavani and her father went to the council the same day at about 3.30pm to get their dog.

“We were first told that our dog was not in MPKj and that the person-in-charge was not in.

“An officer told us that the council is giving the dog-catching contract to a new contractor,” she said.

“The officer also said MPKj did not keep any dogs that were caught,” she said.

Five minutes later, another officer delivered her the bad news — her dog had been put to sleep.

“How could they kill my dog without informing us or giving us any notice?

“The officer said there is nothing she could do as the contractors have buried it at a landfill in Sepang,” she said.

“I called the officer-in-charge and related my story to her and asked if I could claim the body of my dog. She replied sarcastically how could I claim my dog when it has been buried at the landfill.

“I also questioned her about the failure to notify us before our dog was put to sleep, to which she replied: ‘If there were 10 dogs, should I have to call 10 people (dog-owners)?’

“At the end of the conversation, she told me angrily that I could go to Sepang and dig out the body of my dog if I wanted to.”

Bavani said the incident caused her family great pain and anguish. “Whenever we see a dog, we would be reminded of the incident and think of Puppy.

“We are sad and angry. We want to know the guidelines for dog-catching. Do they put the dogs to sleep the very day they are caught?”

Council president Datuk Hassan Nawawi Abdul Rahman said they had terminated the contract of the previous contractor.

“It is our mistake,” he said.

He said an average of 30 stray dogs were caught every month.

“Stray dogs are given a jab to be put to sleep. Those we suspect to have owners are sent to SPCA.

“The state government has proposed for a centralised dog pound in Sepang.,” he said, adding that it was important for the dog pound to be far from residential areas so that residents will not be disturbed by the barking.

Currently, there are no dog pounds in the municipal councils of Kajang and Sepang. In comparison, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council has a pound in Puchong.

According to MPSJ officer Azfarizal Abdul Rashid, all the strays and abandoned dogs will be placed in the animal pound in Puchong Utama.

“The strays and those infected with diseases will be put to sleep within three days while pets which had owners will be put to sleep if their owners fail to claim them within a week.

According to Azfarizal, dog-catching operations are carried out three to four times a week.

“It is carried out by MPSJ staff and private companies. The private company is paid for each dog caught.

“Almost all the employees of MPSJ and the company that is involved in dog-catching in Subang Jaya municipality have gone through dog-catching courses,” he said.
Bootcamp VS Fitness Centers

Guys,

Ever heard of Bootcamp? They originated from Australia, its getting big now in Malaysia. They do all outdoor work out, lifting huge tyres, crazy push ups and etc.. Basically like army training style but not so hardcore. And their price is not cheap, >RM230. Check out: www.bootcamp.com.my

As for other Fitness Centers like Fitness First, monthly fee >RM190. You got all equipments there and classes provided as well, but one thing FF doesn't have compare to Bootcamp is teamwork between trainees and members. And their personal trainer is so expensive.

Which one do you guys think its more worth it??
