Should I become a Chemical Engineer?

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Brian Ong, just finished STPM Science (dropped Physics), did quite well if I do say so myself.

Well, my story is just a series of unfortunate events with a pinch of fortune. After STPM, I applied to Universiti Malaya to pursue either Genetics and Molecular Biology or Law. Sadly, I got turned down. No doubt it was devastating, truly heart wrenching honestly but I treated it as a hurdle that will somehow make me stronger.

After that, I managed to land myself a full scholarship to read Law (University of London External Programme) in a local private university. Three weeks into it, I got an email from UM stating that there are openings in the Faculty of Engineering for Chemical Engineering. Now I am here, in a dilemma, a question that I believe haunts many prospective undergraduates, should I give up what I have now and take up the offer from UM?

In my journey to find the answer, I have consulted a few people. Veterans and seniors, none of them engineers. So here I am now, writing this text, hoping that any chemical engineer would shed some light to a lost kid. I will try to keep my questions short. My questions are:

1. I didn't take Physics in STPM, will that impede me from excelling in Chemical Engineering? Also, is Chemical Engineering very technical? Do you have to deal with a lot of machinery?

2. I am well aware that the oil and gas industry is booming in Malaysia, however I also know that the competition in the field is stiff and landing oneself a job in the industry is no easy task. What are the other fields that a Chemical Engineering graduate can strive in? In a pragmatic sense, is the money good?

3. This question bears no offence or disrespect, perhaps I just have some doubts due to my young age, I am still unrefined and raw. Is the quality of education in UM good? I believe you and I both have heard about how low has the level of education in Malaysia stooped.

Before I end this rather lengthy post, I sincerely apologise if I have in any way at all, offended you. Please do understand that I do not carry any intention to displease you. As a closure, I thank you for taking time to read this message of mine.

Local University Admission

Hi, I am a STPM graduate. I studied science stream and managed to get myself a CGPA of 3.86 and a Band 5 in MUET. UPU result just came out and I got offered a place in UMP for chemical engineering. However I wish to enter UM, the course that I wish to pursue in UM requires 3.00 CGPA and at least Band 2 MUET. I went for the interview in UM, everything went really well but I still got turned down.

I want to appeal but UPU policy does not allow me to because I am already offered a place. What should I do? Should I turn to politicians?

Is Biology looked down versus other sciences?

Well, I am not sure if it is a fact or not but based on my personal experience, even at STPM level, Physics is regarded superior compared to Biology.

Job for Genetics and Molecular Biology

Hi, I am not yet a graduate but intend to pursue the degree mentioned above in UM. If things work out well, I could finish it within 4 years and I will be 24 years old by that time.

I do know that this degree is useless if I don't go for Masters and later on PhD. I am aiming for this course because I love to do research and could stay in a lab a whole day just to study one problem. I don't mind working in a university.

Just want to ask any senior here who is familiar with this field.

1. How much is the salary?
2. Do universities expect a lot from you if you do work in a university?

Hi, I just finished STPM and got a CGPA of 3.92. I applied for NUS Law and Life Science DDP and got rejected. At the same time, I have a place at UM for Genetics and Molecular Biology.

I am in a dilemma now, should I appeal for NUS or go for UM? I admit that my results aren't perfect, but I had no idea the standard in Singapore is so high, even 3.92 can't get you a place. Anyone facing the same situation? Please give me some advice.

I have always wanted to enter NUS. I can see future in NUS, I just can't see any future staying here in Malaysia as one of the minorities (no offence). I am lost now, to seniors, please advise me. Thanks.
