Hi, been subbed for more than a year I believe, now back for

I have been looking to make my 24/7 home server dead silent, the old PSU is quite annoying now it's running for more than 12 years, a slight bulging caps but you know, they still alive, darn tough dude.
Now I want my server to runs a bit better, serving me 24/7 of goodness and I planned to retire the PSU for quite sometimes already.

So, I have been searching in the market for fanless PSU, its very hard to see low powered fanless nowadays? Or is there no market for them?
I only need less than 100W for my system, so a 300W to 450W (top) would be a good options.
Any recommendation for local stock availability?

VGA to DP converter

Dear All,

I know that going more pixels means more advance port (DP, HDMIv2, etc) but some of my device still stuck at VGA so I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced VGA to DP or even HDMI converter?

Free to discuss this further.

My situation is I have an old trusty KVM still working fine but only VGA interface, and some of my hardware still running off VGA so I am hesitate to upgrade to higher-end monitor due to this factor.
After my last purchase (Dell P2414H), I figure it is probably going to be the last tech that going to last for the next 3 to 5 years before VGA become obsolete.
I am very interested in the Ultra-wide screen that is been "hot" recently, extra work space instead of extending my laptop to another screen which feels awkward with different screen size and resolution, so my next couple of years planning is to switch to ultra-wide and have my laptop's screen off (lid close).

Now, it comes to me that HDMI also has limited compatibility in the ultra-wide arena, and does HDMI output from laptop has HDMI limitation as such the monitor? (HDMI v1.1, 1.4a, v2.0, etc)
Because if the graphics card output has a HDMI version limitation, does it means I have to buy a new system? (Desktop with newer graphics card or new Laptop)
I have seen lots of review on monitors but rarely do discussion on the source output so I was wonder if source will matter which version of port (DP v1.1, DP v1.2, HDMI v1.4a, HDMI v2.0) the system is using in order to be compatible with the monitor?

Keep the thread alive if this is relevant to some people like me.

p/s: This is not about just ultra-wide discussion, it's about "old-to-new-converter" discussion.

Hi All,

I am in a dilemma to choose new monitor as all those new monitors has no VGA port, most of the models that I wishes to have only has HDMI and DP.

I want to ask those experienced users with KVM (VGA only) who successfully convert VGA to either HDMI or DP (I think DP is asking a little too much) can help me to find one that actually works.

I am looking at several models from Dell.

Unless of course there's U2412M that I can still purchase without paying hefty postage to Kuching, Sarawak (I know it's darn heavy).

[WTA] Weird booting up issue

Hi, before I begin, below is my desktop's spec:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Team Xtreme 4GB RAM (2x 2GB)
Gigabyte EP35-DS3 mainbaord
Gigabyte nVidia GTX560
Gigabyte Odin Pro 550W
WDC 1TB Blue
WDC 1TB Black
WDC 3TB Green (2 units unplugged, not powered)
3 units of 120 mm fans
1 units of 200 mm fan
1 units of 230 mm fan
Windows 8 Pro
Age of all items (except GPU): ~5 years+
Age of GPU: 1 year+
Note: No O.C.

When booting from cold boot, the PC will eventually hit corrupted screen (distorted lines slides downward) few times before it finally got BSOD and restart itself.
This happen much often when I got back my GTX560 from RMA, I myself does not know what really the issue.

But, this will not happen if I stall a bit at the BIOS setup, I enter the BIOS setup after I press the power button, stall there for couples of minute before I restart it again, and it will enter Windows normally, and weirdly, quite fast. This though if I forgot or skipped the step above, it will eventually hit the BSOD and restart itself, this will drag the booting up time double or even triple (from 15~40 seconds, normal startup within 15 seconds only).

Firstly I thought it was the PSU, since the machine is quite aged, but I can play games for up to 7 hours straight, full power without any issue.

Kindly provide useful comments, well, suggest anything if possible, but I'll consider if it involve... $$$ Poor kid end up with strange hobby... ha..ha...ha...

90 degree bend elbow USB

Just want to know if anyone has or know anywhere I can buy such port, I need to DIY a bit due to the specific length that I'll be using it for.

I need it for Standard A to A, if possible the elbow part can be adjust so it could left or right.

My situation is to connect laptop USB port to cooling pad, a very short 4~5 inches of length.
Using normal USB cable has always not so convenient as the wire bend it tends to break after certain times, it also distract my mouse usage since I'm a right-handed, and that's exactly where the ports connected. Also the USB port is located quite far down to the palm rest area unlike some of the older laptops which nearer to the screen's hinge.

USB ports at the left is always occupied so.... anyway I can find the elbow USB A to A? Or perhaps you have better suggestion?

DSL-520b & MRU

Hi,

I have an Internet issue here where I just couldn't figure it out, Google just can't do the help any more so I'm posting seeking network expertise help.

The Internet went crazy just recently, just few weeks ago this symptom started, I'm able to connect to Internet (able to get good Ping reply) but unable to surf at all, only manage to get connected to the web server but can't even get pass the header (Has title and keeps on loading forever...).
I'm not sure what's the cause but I have been changing modem (got a same modem from my boss), adapter to no avail, but sometimes turn off the router for few moment and turn it back on does the trick, now it works for few days and the symptom come back.
I look into the system log of my router (DSL-520b) and found this strange error that I have never encounter.

I hit a dead end trying to figure it out through uncle Google, couldn't even find a setting inside the router that's able to set the MRU, so I'm stuck with it, now I can't even gets it to work with cool boot (turn off for few minutes and turn back on).
I'm currently using my mobile phone limited data to goes online to post this, hopefully there's hope for me.

Can TM help me with this? Cause the modem can totally connected through the PPP server, everything seems fine, except I have hard time getting any data through.

Edit: As I was posting this, err... what can I say, the data just back online again, what could be wrong? Is it TM fault? Please enlighten me, well you can post technical stuff, I want to learn more about this make-me-going-crazy thing.

Ok, I know this is silly but I want confirmation on this Lenovo latest laptop G400S.
Also I want to know if it's really IDE, can it be changed to AHCI mode.

I need to confirm this due to the AHCI mode on SSD of which I'll be install on to enable TRIM.

I need G400S owner to verify this for me, some camera snap on the BIOS/UEFI settings will do, so I can go ahead with my SSD purchase.

Note: I have yet to purchase the laptop... I'm just a little impatient, if there're no owner can help then I'll need to head over to the shop to have the salesperson to shows it to me, it's going to be quite troublesome so I want to save all those trouble. Google does not help...

Sound Dampening.

I wonder how many of you would actually use sound dampening material to lower the overall noise coming from the casing?

I have a casing of which all the fans already at their minimal spindle speed but still generate noise when the environment is quiet, well it's at my bed room and only couple of meters away from my bed so it could get annoying if I turn off my desk fan (yes, my desk fan actually louder) when the weather getting cold.

I was thinking of purchasing those acoustic foam but it's quite expensive.

Anyone using other material? Cheap and practical, I'm a serious cheap-stake
Will polyfoam works the same? I kinda have plenty of them around, even the compressed one

Network suddenly stopped working...

I'm recently upgrade my home server from this spec:

Intel Atom N230
2GB RAM
500GB HDD
2TB HDD
DLink GbE network card
Cap Kambing PSU

to this spec:

Intel C2D E8400
Gigabyte G41M-Combo
2x 2TB HDD

Use back following item:
2GB RAM
500GB HDD
2TB HDD
Cap Kambing PSU

OS: Windows 2008

I was impressed by the network performance, able to reach up to 110MB/s.
Was smooth until somehow when I access the server, it'll disconnect without any error at all.
Checked the server side the network seems fine except the transmit and receive were halt, re-enable (disable and enable) the network adapter does not work, and ONLY works when I reboot the whole system.
I already exchanged with another same main-board (1-on-1 exchange), boot up fine, and only to face this same issue again after 1 day of use.

FYI I didn't re-install the Windows (laziness ) but just start it up, install all necessary drivers. All drivers is Windows 7 drivers btw, website does not has Windows 2008 option so I thought it should works, installed fine and working properly until that issue happened.

Has anyone ever encountered such headache? It troubles me when I access remotely and suddenly disconnect, just to find out it's the dang issue again.

RM1,000 to upgrade or save up for a new laptop?

Ok, I just need opinion so I can be clearer to myself, sometimes people just like that.
So I may be (just may be) able to spend around RM1k to upgrade my laptop.
My Laptop specifications:
Intel C2D T6500 @ 2.1GHz
3GB RAM (2GB + 1GB)
320GB Scorpio Black (7,200rpm, fastest at the time I bought)
AMD Mobile HD4570

Ok, my target of upgrades is the RAM, probably 2 sticks of DDR2-800 4GB to make it 8GB.
And the rest maybe a 240GB SSD (porbably need to top up slightly).

What do you all think? Does it worth that RM1k to upgrade?

Or.... Just save the hell up for a new faster laptop? Probably need to save up to RM3k+ to get a decent one (SSD included)
