Singapore to double its rail network by 2030

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/photos/singapore-...2030-slideshow/

Singapore will double its rail network by 2030 in a major expansion announced on Thursday.

As part of the Land Transport Masterplan 2013, two new MRT lines will be built and three existing lines will be extended. This will double the current rail network from 178 km to about 360 km.

LTA said in a statement that it will build the 50-km Cross Island Line (CRL), which will start from Changi and pass through Loyang, Pasir Ris, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio before reaching Sin Ming.

[SEE SLIDESHOW: SINGAPORE'S MRT NETWORK IN 2030]

Continuing westwards, it will serve areas such as Bukit Timah, Clementi, West Coast, and end at Jurong Industrial Estate.

Targeted to be completed by 2030, it will also provide commuters with another alternative for East-West travel to the current East-West Line.

In addition, it will connect to all the other major lines, complementing the existing Circle Line.

Another 20-km Jurong Region Line (JRL) will serve residents of Choa Chu Kang, Boon Lay and future developments in the Tengah area.

It will connect commuters to Jurong West areas and places such as NTU, the Jurong Industrial estate including Jurong Island, and the future Jurong Gateway.

Expected to be completed by 2025, JRL will connect the Jurong region with the rest of Singapore. Commuters in the north will be also able to enter the Jurong area directly via the JRL, without having to interchange at the heavily-used Jurong East interchange.

Expansion to existing lines

Three existing lines -- the Circle Line (CCL), Downtown Line (DTL) and North-East Line (NEL) -- will also be extended.

The CCL will close the link between HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations and save commuters the hassle of making multiple transfers. The extension, which will also pass through Keppel, is expected to be completed by 2025.

The NEL will be extended northwards by one station to serve Punggol North including the new Punggol Downtown.

The DTL will be two km longer by 2025 -- to run through the East Coast area. It will be connected to the East West Line and the Eastern Region Line, which will be ready by 2020, so that commuters can transfer between the Downtown Line and Eastern Region Line in the east.

As for the NEL, two kilometres will be added by 2030 -- in tandem with new developments in Punggol -- to serve Punggol North, including the new Punggol Downtown.

The Downtown Line, which now ends at Expo station, will be extended to the Eastern Region Line by 2025.

The LTA is also studying the addition on the North-South Line between Yishun and Sembawang stations in anticipation of future developments in the area.

LTA said it expects that by 2030, 8 in 10 households in Singapore will be within a 10-minute walk of a rail station.

Jurong resident Shawn Anboo, 23, welcomed the news of the upcoming Jurong Line.

"Jurong will also be a mini-CBD in future so having this line will help many workers working here. Now there’s a hospital and two more shopping centers coming up so the new will definitely be very practical in future," he said.

He also said it would benefit army service personnel in future.

"As an NSF, I was at Tengah Airbase and I had to take a bus from my place to Jurong East station and take a train to Boon Lay and then another bus to Tengah Airbase. So it will be very useful to the future NSF who will be posted to camps like Tengah Airbase, Sungei Gedong and Keat Hong camp. Most NSFs don't have their own transport," he said.

"The only thing is that SMRT should fix their current problems first but I believe that will be done in time," he added.

Fellow Jurong resident Nicole Yeo, 21, said the new JRL line would complement the bus service in the area.

"SBS buses already go in loops like bus 99, 98, 185. A lot of buses already take people through Jurong West. But SMRT should focus on their current problems. If they haven't fixed their current problems, I don't think they should move on to bigger ideas," she said.

Should Singapore firm invest in one of Malaysia telecoms (Maxis, Celcom, Digi).

Can increase competition and make price cheaper for all? In the quarter, it secured licenses to operate 2G and 3G mobile services in Rwanda, one of the fastest growing telecom markets across Africa, expanding its footprint in Africa to 17 countries.

Telkomsel added 1.9 million mobile customers from a quarter ago. Its total mobile customer base grew 12% or 11 million from a year ago and stood at 104 million as at 30 September 2011.

Telkomsel continued to enhance its network, deploying 1,400 base stations in the quarter. In October 2011, it also forged a partnership with Skype, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, to offer its mobile customers exclusive access to Skype applications on selected smartphones.

Optus postpaid base reaches 5 million

Optus continued its customer growth momentum with net postpaid additions of 116,000 from a quarter ago and the total postpaid customer base exceeded 5 million. Postpaid customers comprised 54% of the total base, up 4 per cent from a year ago.

Prepaid customers returned to growth this quarter with net additions of 15,000 as sales lifted and the churn rates on 'International Calls for Less' plans improved.

The number of 3G customers increased to 5.96 million, a 13% increase from a quarter ago. This included a base of 1.46 million wireless broadband customers, an increase of approximately 94,000 customers from a quarter ago.

Total mobile customers grew by 131,000 to 9.23 million, up 4% from a year ago.

SingTel Singapore continues to grow market share

SingTel added 71,000 mobile customers from a quarter ago. Its total mobile customer base grew 10% or 321,000 from a year ago to 3.49 million as at 30 September 2011.

It achieved another quarter of market share gains. Market share increased to 45.5% from 44.1% a year ago.

In the postpaid segment, 40,000 customers were added this quarter, bringing the total postpaid customer base to 1.87 million, and up from 1.68 million a year ago. The 11% year-on-year growth was driven by strong demand for smartphones and the increased take-up of data SIMs for integrated mobile broadband bundles and tablets.

SingTel added 31,000 prepaid customers this quarter, led by positive customer response to successful 3G prepaid offerings such as the 3G SIM card, as well as data and Blackberry value added services. Its total prepaid customer base grew 8.9% from a year ago and reached 1.62 million as at 30 September 2011.

More information on the performance of the SingTel Group will be released tomorrow.

First Time to KL

/k/, I'm from SG and I'm planning a trip to KL from 29 July to 1 August (tentatively). I will be backpacking around on my own free and easy.

My main objective during this trip is to get to know the KLCC, bukit bintang and the surrounding area well. Visit places where locals go, not touristy places. I would want to cover the entire Bukit Bintang, Golden Triangle, commercial prime areas (KLCC), yes mainly city area. I also want to visit a few suburbs like PJ provided I have time.

I also hope to travel by foot, LRT and buses so as to save some money, see more things and know where the locals like to go. I don't mind cheap budget hotels.

I will most likely be taking bus from SG to Larkin, Johor Bahru and then transfer to another bus to KL on 28th July, Thursday night and will reach KL on Friday Morning. Just like what some /K/ have mentioned, travelling at night will save me a day's time and hotel charges.

However, getting to know the place on my own is not enough, I am actually hoping to find people from /k/ who would be kind enough to take me around the city, advice me which cheap budget hotel to choose that is near to the city centre and LRT station. That will save me plenty of time and to know this big city in a few days and know from the locals point of view, which areas are worth checking out.

Will anyone here be free on those days (actually i can change the dates to suit whoever is kind enough, but preferably over the weekends) to take me around?

Genting Singapore's Resorts World at Sentosa opened in February last year, while Las Vegas Sands' Marina Bay Sands started operations in April.

Wynn will have to wait till March 2017 to open a property in the Southeast Asian city as Singapore has granted the two incumbents exclusivity for the period. And the banks themselves, they give themselves an even bigger buffer on top of MAS requirements. So all three banks are very well capitalised. "

While the achievements of the Singapore banks may reflect their capital strength and prudent risk management, analysts said that the metrics in the ranking may have favoured Singapore banks.

The bulk of the weightage in the rankings comprised Tier 1 capital ratios against risk-weighted assets, which analysts said is the most useful indicator in analysing the safety of banks.

And OCBC Bank also had a higher Tier 1 capital ratio, edging out its two other competitors.

Kenneth Ng, head of Singapore research at CIMB, said: "...DBS bank had a problem with shipping loans, Middle Eastern loans which they had to grapple with. UOB had its port of investment securities which declined in value. But OCBC did not have anything that affected them."

Analysts said that a drawback of the strength of the three banks is that they employ less leverage than foreign banks.

This creates trade-offs in terms of generating higher returns.

All three banks currently operate in the Asian region beyond Singapore.

A DBS Spokesperson said: "It is gratifying that the overall strength of Singapore banks is being recognised globally. Singapore banks are indeed strongly capitalised and well placed to meet Basel III standards, benefiting from the discipline of operating under a more stringent regulatory regime.

"The study reaffirms the evaluation of the rating agencies, of which Standard and Poor's rates DBS as the only AA- bank in Singapore.'

David Conner, CEO of OCBC Bank, said in a press statement: "We are delighted to be recognised as the World's Strongest Bank by Bloomberg. It is an honour, not just for all of us in the OCBC Group, but also for Singapore as a leading financial centre."

- CNA/cc/ms

GIC’s annual return last 30 years comparable to equities’ 10.2pc

GIC manages around US$300 billion.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/busines...equities-10.2pc

SINGAPORE, May 9 – The Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC) has achieved returns comparable to equities since its inception 30 years ago, but with less risk, chairman Lee Kuan Yew said today.

“Compared with the popular high-return asset class of equities, which returned 10.2 per cent per annum in US dollar terms since 1981, the GIC portfolio made comparable returns with lesser risk, Lee (picture) said at a dinner to mark the sovereign wealth fund’s 30th anniversary.

He added the returns outpaced global inflation by a comfortable margin.

“The next 30 years looks challenging (and) the investment outlook could be less benign,” said Lee, Singapore’s first prime minister and the father of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

GIC, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, manages around US$300 billion (RM896.67 billion). Its investments include stakes in UBS and Citigroup , which it helped rescue in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

GIC said in September last year it managed an average return of 7.1 per cent a year in US dollar terms in the 20 years to March 2010, up from 5.7 per cent per annum for the two decades ended March 2009.

Lee said the global economic environment appeared “unusually uncertain”.

“It will take time to work through the full consequences of the crisis, such as the huge amount of debt the developed world has taken on,” Lee said, adding the turmoil in the Middle East has elevated geopolitical risks.

Lee said GIC must be prepared to take decisions that may appear unconventional to perform better than its peers.

“As GIC grows larger and more established, the impetus to follow conventional practices will grow stronger. This could lead to mediocrity.” – Reuter

This is all too common in Johor though things are getting better. As a frequent SG traveller to JB, I hope things will continue to improve.

Malaysian road bullies smashed S'pore car in JB -- because driver didn't give way

http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...because_of.html

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

STOMPer angry's car was badly smashed by a group of men in Johor Bahru at about 3am last Sunday (Apr 17), all because he failed to give way to a Malaysia-registered car.

Said the STOMPer:

"I went to JB for drinks, petrol, car wash and food. This happened at Stulang Laut (the ZON), which is popular among Singaporean drivers for its seafood.

"The attack is believed to have started from a misunderstanding due to my failure to give way to a red Malaysian car that emerged from a small lane.

"I had proceeded following behind the car in front of me and shortly, trouble came. My car was stopped by another man at the gate of the ZON.

"The passengers in this red car rushed to my door and smashed the window with their fists and I can clearly see one man with a steering wheel lock.

"I quickly drove off and soon, I saw more people chasing after my car. These were people on motorcycles and everything turned chaotic.

"This attack happened all the way from Stulang Laut to the JB customs. I drove into the customs to sought protection from the police and surprisingly, these attackers followed me all the way into the customs and carried on smashing the car.

"There were just a few police officers and they got us (there were two other friends with me) out of the car. But after we were out of the car, they carried on with the attack and even jumped on the roof of my car."

According to the STOMPer, about 20 men attacked his car that night. He found out from Malaysian police later that only nine people were arrested, and among them were three 15-year-old minors.

He added:

"I had been chased by two Malaysian cars and at least 10 motorcycles that night.

"I had numerous helmets being thrown at my car and several attempts by the two cars to corner my car. I am a frequent visitor to JB for the cheap food and petrol.

"I am writing this to inform fellow drivers, that JB is totally not safe at all and we are always the vulnerable victims."

Emerging from Marina Bay and enclosed in the distinctive glass crystal pavilion, Pangaea and Avalon, two of the hottest nightclub brands in the U.S. and Europe, will captivate partygoers in Singapore and from around the world with its innovative concepts, music and premium service.

Pangaea, the ultra-lounge bottle club that swiftly attracted celebrity followers in New York, Miami and London, has hosted A-listers including Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Moss and Will Smith. Occupying 6,000 square feet, Pangaea is on the first level of the southern Crystal Pavilion. Patrons can access the club through the underwater tunnel connected to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. The ultra-lounge will be able to host up to 400 partygoers at one time or over a thousand a night.

Pangaea operator Michael Ault said, "When we first announced our plans to open this club, the structure was not even built. We only had our imagination and a few wild ideas. Today, piercing the waters of Marina Bay, the crystal pavilion is one of the most stunning and perhaps the best venues in Singapore. We said from day one that we will create something the world has never seen and with the formulae of great architecture and our experience in successfully operating the best clubs in leading international cities, we simply cannot wait to open our doors and put Singapore on the global party map."

The second and with a completely distinct concept from Pangaea will be Avalon. Across two levels and over 12,000 square feet, entertainment at Marina Bay Sands will reach a whole new high with Avalon. The club will feature an exciting line-up of leading international DJ's, live concerts and high profile events.

Avalon co-founder and club guru Steven Adelman said, "Avalon has hosted virtually every celebrity - The Black Eyed Peas, Ashton Kutcher, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Pink, to name a few. Parties at our club in L.A have included the annual Grammy after-party hosted by Justin Timberlake. Here in Singapore, we are building the most ambitious and state-of-the-art visual, sound and light system we're aware of anywhere. The combination of Avalon's star power and Marina Bay Sands' iconic structure will set the stage for the biggest party in Asia," said Steven.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Executive Director, Mr. John Postle, said, "We have discovered two of the most leading and sought-after club operators in the world. With the creative genius of both Michael Ault and Steven Adelman, we are creating an entertainment hotspot like no other in Asia. Floating on Marina Bay and set in the stunning crystal pavilion, Marina Bay Sands will be home to every guest looking for the best energy in town."

About Pangaea

Pangaea, the "Ultra Lounge" that literally invented the term and dominated New York City, London, Spain, and Miami is slated to open later this year. Pulsating from within the remarkable, floating Crystal Pavilion, at the Marina Bay Sands, Pangaea will set a new standard for luxury, excitement, fantasy, and escape.

About Avalon

Following much anticipation, nightclub Avalon will soon rise from the Singapore bay in the southern Crystal Pavilion. Helmed by nightlife veteran Steven Adelman, Avalon aims to bring a new level of musical adventure to its patrons. Combining performances from the world's leading DJs with live music in a multi-sensory interactive environment, Avalon is set to redefine the nightclub experience.
