Leica M6 vs Nikon FM2

Leica fans may scorn at this comparison. Seriously? Leica vs Nikon? But please hear me out.

I own a Hasselblad 500cm (80mm 2.8), Nikon FM2 (50mm 1.8) and recently just added a Leica (Voiglander 35mm 1.4).

I bought the Nikon about a month earlier than the Leica. I took it out for a couple of shoots and it was a good experience. Very snappy operation, light and solid. Then I got my hands on a Leica M6 and used it as my main camera when I travelled to US for almost a month. While the experience wasn't bad, it doesn't seem to justify the price difference compared to Nikon FM2. It's light and solid, but wasn't as snappy as the FM2. Photo wise they were quite comparable too.

So I've been wondering what am I missing with the Leica. Maybe I need more time to warm up to it? Maybe I need to get a better lens? Or it's just not for everybody?

If the two are very similar, I'm actually considering to sell off my Leica and get a Pentax 645n. Thought it would be nice to add an auto-f camera to my arsenal. Can't afford Contax 645.

I mainly do street photography, but would love to explore outdoor portraiture shoots. I don't do studio shoots.

I own an old LC-A but recently when I tried shooting with it, whenever i turn the dial for next shot, the counter doesn't follow. Not sure if the film is not moving or the film moved but the counter didn't. Anyone faced this problem too?

Only 350 units in the world, all sold out. The camera has a metal body and a snake-style patterned leather coat. Includes 90mm Lens and 58mm Wide-angle Lens.

3 Shooting Formats

The expansive 6 x 12 format allows you to capture a vast space that makes for jaw-dropping photos; whether landscape, portrait or anything else you feel like shooting. And wait there’s more; the Belair X 6-12 can also shoot in both square 6 x 6 and regular 6 x 9 formats. So whatever shape you’re in, the Belair X 6-12 is ready to match you!
6 x 6 Square (12 photos per film roll)
6 x 9 Standard (8 photos per film roll)
6 x 12 Panoramic (6 photos per film roll)

Zone Focusing

The Belair X 6-12 is a zone-focusing camera just like the LOMO LC-A+ and LC-Wide. There are 4 focusing zones on the Belair X 6-12: 1m, 1.5m, 3m and infinity. Pick the focus to match the distance to your subject and you’re ready to shoot!

Automatic Exposure Shutter

The Belair X 6-12 camera boasts an electronic automatic shutter. This means that just like with the LOMO LC-A+, the correct film sensitivity needs to be set so that photos turn out neither dark, nor overexposed. Whilst the LOMO LC-A+ shutter closes only once there is enough light, the Belair X 6-12’s auto-exposure range is EV4 – EV15 and this is calculated just before the shutter is released. EV4 is equivalent to the light situation in a very dim restaurant when using ISO 100 film. Under aperture f/8, the exposure time is 4 seconds.

The minimum recommended conditions when shooting in dim light with the Belair X 6-12 are ISO/ASA dial set to 100 with 100 ISO film. If you’re after brighter results in a dark setting, a high ISO film or switching to B (Bulb) Mode is recommended. B Mode will expose your shot for as long as you keep the shutter pressed and is great for low-light shooting.

50 – 1600 ISO Range

The perfect all-rounder, the Belair X 6-12 has an ISO range between 50 and 1600. So whether you’re in the mood for fast or slow film, this camera has a setting to suit.

Flash Hot-Shoe

The Belair X 6-12 also has a standard hot-shoe connection which means you can use any flash with standard hot-shoe. When you are using flash, the auto exposure will still work normally to capture any ambient light.

Shoots 120 Film

The Belair X 6-12 shoots wonderful 120 (also known as medium format) film. Because it is a larger photo format than 35mm, 120 is perfect for capturing all the details in every shot. And lots of photo labs all around the world (such as Lomography LomoLabs) develop 120 film!

Multiple & Long Exposure Capabilities

Love to shoot long exposures and multiple exposures? We do too! That’s why the Belair X 6-12 comes equipped with a Bulb setting for beautiful long exposure shots and MX setting for your double exposure photo shoots.

Classic Bellows Design

Who says panoramic medium-format cameras have to be the size of a small car? We know photographers are always on the move; that is why the painstakingly developed and reliable fold-out bellows system allows the Belair X 6-12 to collapse to a convenient and portable size - meaning you can take the camera wherever you go.

Belair X 6-12 Technical Specifications

Exposure Area: 104 x 52mm (6x12), 78 x 52mm (6x9), 52mm x 52mm (6x6)
Film Type: 120 Roll Film
Interchangeable Lens Mount: 3 Bayonet Type
Auto-exposure Mode: Aperture Priority
Auto-Exposure range: EV4 ~ EV15
Highest Shutter Speed: 1/125
Lowest Shutter Speed (B Mode): Unlimited
Film Sensitivity Supports (ASA/ISO): 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600
Battery Supply: 2x1.5V (2 x LR44)
Multiple Exposure: Yes
Flash Connection: X-type Synchronization Hot-shoe
Tripod Socket Thread: Standard ¼” Tripod Socket
Camera Weight (without batteries and film): 500g (Globetrotter and Jetsetter), 450g (City Slicker)

Need Advice on Set Top Box

Need a little advice here. I'm using Sharp 60" TV connected with Sharp Sound Bar and PS3. Basically I'm trying to find a Set Top box that can cater mainly to playback videos. I thought I could connect my iPad to AppleTV via AirPlay and just play directly from iPad, but I also want a huge harddisk to store all the video files so my iPad do not need to be attached to it all the time.

Is there any Set Top Box that allows AirPlay, can keep files and play wide variety of HD quality videos?

Best Screenprotector for Stylus writing

I just bought the new iPad and stuck on a Screenguard (cost me RM79). Then I bought the BAMBOO stylus because I was hoping to use it for taking note during meetings. I tried using the stylus on apps like BAMBOO Paper and Sketchbook. However, I find that it's not as responsive as I expected. I had to give it a considerable amount of pressure before i can get any lines. I tried using it on a different ipad (also with screen protector on) and it was more sensitive (require only minor pressure).

So I'm wondering what is the best/most sensitive screen protector for Stylus use. Any recommendation?

Polo 1.2 TSI / Fiesta / Focus / Latio

Dilemma dilemma!

I've been checking out the said cars on forums, mags, and I 've managed to try my hands on Fiesta, PUG 308VTi and VW Polo 1.2 TSI.

Fiesta costs around RM84k. I tested it on Puchong and I must say the handling is superb. It feels good to sit in the driver sit, the gadgets look impressive (voice control!), taking corners was smooth, the car feels like it sticks to the floor. Everything feels good, except for the fact that the backseats are smaller than a MyVi! If it was slightly bigger than MyVi I would have taken it without any consideration.

Then I went over to test the 308VTi. It costs around RM100k. I really lurve the front, and the interior really feels expensive, good quality material and all. Technology was very impressive, auto-dim rearview mirror, multifunction key and stuffs. Backseat slightly bigger than Fiesta, but still a tad cramp. But what really disappoint me was the driving experience. Somehow, it feels weird when I accelerate, like it got confused. When I tried to accelerate, there's a drop of power before pushing forward. And it feels light and wobbly.

Then I went over to try the Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI. The first impression from outside was a really understated beauty, simple, elegant design that is not trying to shout at you, but rather tease you to enter and check out the experience yourself. Inside, I think it's almost the size of the PUG, but because the interior is minimal, without all the fluff and bulky seats, it feels slightly bigger. The interior, again, feels refined. The moment you see and touch the interior, you know they are made of good stuffs. Very basic design, no touchscreens and stuffs that you find in PUG and Fiesta, but good quality built. The real attraction that the sales guy kept selling was its 7-speed 1.2 TSI engine. Apparently, according to him, this 1.2 engine performs similar to a 2.0 engine, thanks to its technology. He say it's a really good buy RM108,888 for the technology VW put into this Polo. When I drove it, it's all good, good response, but not something that makes me go WOW. Somehow, I still feel it is slightly underpower. But you'd feel better power once it hits 1500rpm when the turbo kicks it, then it surges forward, but still..... it's just okay.

I haven't had the chance to try Latio and Focus. I've heard that Latio has got good space, but underpowered.

It's been really confusing. I'm not a hardcore fan of speeding, but I'd appreciate good handling, acceleration, nice interior and spacing at least good enough for 5 adults(including driver) to sit comfortably. I'm really attracted to Fiesta, but it's space is a put off. Polo 1.2 feels good, but not sure if it's really worth paying 110k for 1.2, which despite all the technology, isn't really that impressive driving experience.

Does any of you have experience with Latio or Ford Focus? Any to share? Really appreciate your comments!

Peugeot 308 > Current Driver Reviews?

I've been considering to change to a Peugeot 308. I've been searching around but hardly find any reviews by actual Malaysian owners. Hardly see any on the road too. I wonder why. Is it because of the high maintenance, hence nobody wants to get it? Or it is not really a good car afterall? Any 308 owners here care to review/comment on the car? I heard the 308 VTi is fine, but 308 Turbo is jerky? How much is a 308 anyway?

Retreat and do nothing

Dudes, I've been hunting for a place to retreat away from the city, some place like Sekeping Serendah (i've been there). Somewhere you can just laze around and read books or sleep in hammocks whole day, just sleep, eat and read. Somewhere not crowded. I thought about Pulau Rawa as an option, has anyone been there? Or anywhere else in Malaysia you'd recommend? I'm planning to go next Thursday, so any advice now would be much appreciated!

LC-A LomoBoy version

Fellas, I've got an LC-A with lomoboy on it. Was wondering if this version uses Russian Lens? And how does Russian lens differ from the China lens in term of photo quality? Sharper visuals? more vibrant colors? How do you differenciate the lens?

Panasonic DMC LX3 or Ricoh CX2

Guys, I've been asking around shops and I've been getting mixed feedbacks on this issue.

Apparently LX3 has among the most accurate white balance in a compact, churning out accurate colors reproduction. However, it lacks zoom and the shop says that it is not that good in low lighting conditions.

Ricoh CX2 on the other hand uses CMOS processor, similar to those in DSLR, hence the image quality is good, and it snaps real fast, and it has a 10.7 optical zoom + wide angle. However, it lacks manual settings.

Both are priced quite similar, only about 100-200 difference. If I'm looking for a camera for good image quality, especially for shooting at concerts/gigs, which do you think is a better choice?

Need a new compact!

Type of camera/lens/accessories : Good Compact Camera
Budget : RM1500
Your Location : PJ
Preferable brand : Any brand
Type of photography u want to do : Daily shots, will be carrying it around.
Any specific models in mind? : Panasonic GF1, Canon Ixus
Any specific features u want? : Good image quality and color reproduction. Good in low light conditions. Fast start-up. No need for super-high resolutions. Manual settings is a plus. Not a fan of shiny, futuristic-looking cameras, prefer something retro-looking, black is good!

Diana F+ with Polaroid Back with Fish Eye

Elo lomographers, I got myself a DianaF+ with a Polaroid Back. I was thinking of adding a FishEye lens, but I was afraid that the 'curves' of the fisheye pictures would be covered by the polaroid whites. Has anyone tried this combination?

Hey people, I'm facing this stupid problem with the Widgets where the fonts become outlines. Here's the screenshot:

I have no idea why and when it started. Has any of you encountered this? Anyway to solve this font problem? Help appreciated. Thanks!

Or is there anyway to have it imported? Coz they only deliver to US addresses.
