Boy, 8, beats baby to death to stop her crying

An eight-year-old boy beat a baby girl to death to stop her crying while her mother was out partying at a nightclub, US police said on Wednesday (Nov 11), charging him with murder.

The boy was one of several children left alone for hours in a Birmingham, Alabama home last month.

"Since becoming a police officer over 22 years ago, this is by far one of the saddest cases I have witnessed in my career," Birmingham police spokesman Lieutenant Sean Edwards told AFP.

The incident happened at the home of a friend of the baby's mother, whom police have identified as 26-year-old Katerra Lewis. She has been charged with manslaughter over what Edwards called her "reckless" actions.

Police said Lewis left her one-year-old, Kelci, together with several children aged two to eight, while she and the friend went out clubbing. The children - six in total, according to local media - were left unsupervised while Lewis and her friend were gone from roughly 11:00 pm until 2:00 am.

"It is believed that while the mother and friend were at the club, the eight-year-old viciously attacked the one-year-old because the one-year-old would not stop crying," police said in a statement. "The one-year-old suffered from severe head trauma as well as major internal organ damage which ultimately led to her death."

The mother told police on the morning of Oct 11, a Sunday, that she found the baby unresponsive in her crib. The girl was treated at the scene by first responders and was later pronounced dead at a children's hospital.

"This type of behaviour, this type of irresponsibility on behalf of a parent is totally unacceptable," Edwards said of Lewis. "No education, no school, no degree, no training can really prepare you for an eight-year old committing a heinous crime like this."

The mother was released on US$15,000 bail. The Department of Human Resources said it had no prior complaints concerning Lewis or her daughter. The DHR is holding the boy and won't release his name.

It is rare, but not unheard of in the United States, for children involved in the deaths of other children to face serious charges. An 11-year-old boy from Tennessee was charged with first degree murder last month after he shot and killed his eight-year-old neighbour, after arguing over a puppy.

China rolls out first big passenger plane

SHANGHAI (AFP) - China's first big passenger plane rolled off the assembly line on Monday (Nov 2) as the Asian giant seeks to develop its own aviation sector and challenge foreign industry giants for prestige and market share.

The C919, a narrow-body jet which can seat 168 passengers, has been under production at a facility in commercial hub Shanghai for over a year, as workers assembled components under the guidance of Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC).

For China, the plane represents years of efforts in a state-mandated drive to reduce dependence on European consortium Airbus and Boeing of the United States, and even compete against them.

“China’s air transport industry cannot completely rely on imports. A great nation must have its own large commercial aircraft,” the country’s civil aviation chief Li Jiaxiang told an audience of government and industry officials.

A small truck towed the 39-m long plane - painted white with a green tail - out of a cavernous building decorated with an enormous Chinese flag into the sunlight as project workers marched alongside, an AFP journalist saw.

"The roll out of the first C919 aircraft marks a significant milestone in the development of China's first indigenous aircraft," said COMAC chairman Jin Zhuanglong.

But the aircraft, which has a range of up to 5,555 km, will not make its first test flight this year as originally scheduled, Jin said, with the maiden voyage planned for 2016.

The China Daily newspaper has reported it could even be put back to 2017.

500 ORDERS

China has dreamed of building its own civil aircraft since the 1970s when Jiang Qing, leader Mao Zedong's wife and a member of the notorious "Gang of Four", personally backed an attempt to do so. But the Y-10's heavy weight made it impractical and only three were ever made.

Although the C919 is made in China, foreign firms are playing key roles by supplying systems as well as the engines, which are made by CFM International, a joint venture between GE of the US and France's Safran.

Spending on the C919 has not been revealed. Last month, the Export-Import Bank of China said it would provide state-owned COMAC with $7.9 billion in financing for its aircraft projects.

The company already has orders for 517 of its C919 planes, according to a COMAC statement, almost all of them from domestic buyers. Among foreign customers, Thailand's City Airways has ordered 10, according to an announcement last month.

But it will take years for the C919 to be delivered to customers, with the plane expected to enter service in 2019 at the earliest, industry officials said.

“There’s a lot of work to do still,” said Briand Greer, president for Asia-Pacific of Honeywell Aerospace, which is supplying four key systems for the C919: flight control, wheels and brakes, auxiliary power units and navigation.

“A lot of testing, a lot of flight testing, systems integration testing and of course all the certification,” he told AFP.

COMAC has already developed a smaller regional jet, the ARJ, in a project which is years behind schedule.

The 78-90 seat ARJ is still undergoing test flights and lacks the crucial certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration, enabling it to fly in US skies.

The Chinese company also plans a wide body plane, the C929, in cooperation with Russia's United Aircraft Corp., and speculation is mounting that China will create a new aero-engine entity to try to produce the powerful jets needed for large civil aircraft.

The single-aisle C919 targets the lucrative segment dominated by Boeing's 737 and the Airbus A320.

China is expected to add 6,330 new aircraft worth US$950 billion (S$ 1.3 trillion) to its commercial fleet by 2034, Boeing estimates.

Last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping sealed a deal for Chinese firms to buy 300 Boeing planes worth US$38 billion as he visited the company's Seattle plant.

Under an agreement announced on Xi's trip COMAC and Boeing will also set up a "completion centre" in China for work such as painting planes.

Last week, during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, China agreed to buy 100 A320 aircraft from Airbus in a deal worth US$9.7 billion and confirmed options for another 30 twin-aisle A330s.

2015 Headline Findings

Norway comes out on top due the freedom it offers its citizens, the quality of its healthcare system and social bonds between its people.
Switzerland is ranked 2nd in the Index for the third year in a row while Denmark has risen from 4th to 3rd compared to last year.
With seven years of comparable data the Prosperity Index is able to track national progress.

Indonesia has performed better than any country in the world over the past seven years, rising 21 places up the rankings to 69th this year.
Another strong performer since 2009 is Rwanda that has risen 17 places up the Prosperity Index and now ranks 101st.
At the other end of the scale the poorest performers have been Syria (down 23 places), Tunisia (down 28 places) and Venezuela (down 16 places).

Two Chinese diplomats shot dead in Philippines: Police

MANILA: China's consul general in the Philippines' second biggest city was wounded and two of his staff members were killed on Wednesday (Oct 21) during a lunchtime gun attack at a restaurant, police said.

Officers retrieved a semi-automatic .45 Colt pistol and three bullet shells from the scene, he added.

Police said the attack occurred at 1.30pm (0530 GMT) at Lighthouse, a popular restaurant that serves Filipino food in Cebu, the trading capital of the central Philippines and the nation's second biggest city.

Staff at the upmarket restaurant told AFP a group of nine people had gathered in a private room to celebrate the birthday of the consul general, Song Ronghua.

Restaurant cashier Remedios Rivalde, 27, said she was at work at the cash register outside of the function room when she heard gunshots. "I dived under the counter and covered my ears. Then there were other shots that followed," Rivalde said by phone.

She said the reservation had been made shortly before lunch for the consul general's birthday, and the group had ordered a banquet that included popular local delicacies such as tuna head, shrimps and roasted pork.

"They ordered a lot of food, but no liquor," she said.

BULLET THROUGH THE NECK

Song was shot in the neck, but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening and he was in a stable condition in hospital, regional police chief Tom Banas told AFP. "The bullet went clear through (his neck)," Banas said.

Police identified his dead staff members as Sun Shan, the deputy consul general, and Hui Li, a finance officer.

Lighthouse manager Stephen John Patero said staff did not see the shooting because only the guests were in the private room at the time.

Song was born in October, 1962, according to a biography published on news website Sina News.

He has been a career diplomat, joining the foreign ministry in 1987 then serving in New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong before his current posting, according to the biography.

A spokeswoman at the Chinese embassy in Manila, Li Lingxiao, said she could not yet comment. "Our embassy is still verifying the facts. We'll update you as soon as I have anything new," Li said in a text message to AFP.

Philippine foreign ministry spokesman Charles Jose also said he had no comment, as authorities were still determining what happened.

At 17, she found herself with a broken home and nowhere to stay
But friends and a teacher kept her spirits up, and Rohaishah now leads a fulfilling life

SUMMARY

Six years ago in September, Rohaishah Hamid's life spiralled into a vortex of bleakness and unpredictability.

Her folks divorced, leaving her and her mother without a roof over their heads. They could not afford to rent and no one they knew could offer both of them a place to stay. So mother and daughter had to separate.

A family friend took her mother in while Ms Rohaishah, then just 17, bunked in with various classmates and buddies. It was not always possible so on more than one occasion, she had to stay up at void decks or the beach.

There were other problems.

Then studying at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) on a teaching scholarship, her $800 monthly allowance was not enough for her sickly mother's medical bills and other expenses, let alone materials for her art assignments.

She skipped many classes and failed several modules. Nafa threatened to expel her; the Ministry of Education (MOE) wanted to withdraw its scholarship.

It took a lot of pleading before she was given a second chance.

"It was one of the most demoralising periods in my life," says Ms Rohaishah, now 24.

Fortunately her many good friends and an art teacher from her secondary school kept her spirits up and made sure she did not fall over the precipice.

Today, Ms Rohaishah smiles a lot more and breathes much easier.

She is happily settled in a rental flat with her mother. Not only had she graduated from Nafa and completed her teacher training, but she has also found a fulfilling job as an art teacher in Peirce Secondary School. And earlier this year, she won the award for being the school's Most Engaging Teacher.

MIGRANTS waiting to claim asylum in Europe are complaining about their quality of life inside camps, claiming they are having to eat bad food and put up with "slow internet".

Refugees occupying the Ter Apel camp in the Netherlands have bemoaned the lack of comforts inside the centre, claiming they have become "bored" as a result.

An astonishing video that emerged online shows the migrants protesting against the living conditions they currently have to endure.

In the footage one unhappy migrant tells how he does not get enough food, claiming that his "breakfast is small" and he is not provided a substantial lunch either.

He goes on to complain about how he cannot buy cigarettes because the authorities have not provided him with enough money.

Another refugee claims those in the camp have become dissatisfied with the activities in the camp.

"You can just eat, sleep, use the slow internet - it's so bad."

During the footage, which was reported by Breitbart, the migrant adds: "We asked them for language courses, but they said we don’t have it now because this is an emergency camp."

The revelation comes as the European migrant deepens - causing EU member states to lock horns the responsibility of thousands of refugees, many of whom are fleeing war-torn Syria.

Earlier this month a furious war of words broke out between Hungary and Croatia after Budapest authorities seized and confiscated a Croatian train trying to transport 1,000 refugees into the country.

The spiralling situation prompted the Croatian government to declare it could not house any more migrants.

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said: "We cannot register and accomodate these people any longer.

"They will get food, water and medical help, and then they can move on. The European Union must know that Croatia will not become a migrant 'hotspot'. We have hearts, but we also have heads."

A study has also revealed that the influx of migrants coming into the EU is putting Britain’s primary schools under unprecedented pressure.

Nearly 38,000 children under 10 arrived in Britain last year alone, causing experts to want that an extra 1,600 schools will be needed to cope with the soaring demand.

Nick Timothy, director of think tank New Schools Network, which uncovered the statistics, said: “It’s clear that England urgently needs more new schools to address this record level of demand.

"Simply expanding existing schools is not the answer."
