"Saya pun tak nak panjangkan cerita ini tapi pada saya, biarlah pasukan perundangan (uruskan)... yang penting pendirian parti, Rafizi keluar dulu baru kosongkan kerusi (parlimen)," katanya.

Fuziah yang juga Timbalan Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Kos Sara Hidup berkata demikian selepas merasmikan cawangan kedua Madani Mart di Jalan Wong Ah Jang, di Kuantan, Pahang, hari ini.

Dia mengulas demikian ketika ditanya mengenai kenyataan dibuat Rafizi semalam yang menyangkal dakwaan dia keluar parti terlebih dahulu sebelum mengosongkan kerusi parlimen.

Bekas menteri ekonomi itu berkata, dia baru sahaja mendaftar secara rasmi sebagai ahli biasa parti berkenaan pada semalam, sekali gus menafikan dakwaan bahawa dia telah menyertai parti itu lebih awal.

"Hari ini, 21 Mei jam 12.56 tengahari, saya baru saya mendaftar menjadi ahli baru Bersama.

“Saya kini menjadi ahli biasa Bersama dan nombor keahlian saya agaknya lebih corot berbanding (mereka) yang lebih awal sertai sejak hari Ahad," katanya.

Fuziah bagaimanapun menjelaskan tindakan Rafizi membuat pengisytiharan itu dikira sebagai tarikh dia keluar parti.

Sementara itu, ditanya mengenai tindakan terhadap ahli PKR, termasuk ahli parlimen yang hadir pada majlis Ahad lalu, Fuziah memaklumkan dia sudah menugaskan pimpinan parti untuk berhubung dengan mereka.

"Tujuannya untuk menasihatkan mereka, apabila mereka pegang jawatan sebagai ahli parlimen, mereka bukan saja berkhidmat untuk kawasan tapi turut mewakili parti.

"Seharusnya mereka membawa visi perjuangan parti, bukannya berkhidmat di kawasan diwakili pada masa sama mempromosi parti lain," katanya.

Social media users must verify age using official documents starting June — deputy minister

KUCHING (May 22): Users of social media platforms will need to upload official government-issued documents for age verification following the implementation of two new codes under the Online Safety Act (ONSA) introduced by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), effective June 1.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said under the two codes, namely the Children’s Protection Code (CPC) and the Risk Mitigation Code (RMC), documents that may be used include identity cards and passports to prevent users under the age of 16 from opening social media accounts.

“We have now asked platforms to implement age verification. Users need to verify their age using government-issued documents such as identity cards, passports or other official documents.

“If it is merely self-declared, anyone can simply click and claim they are above 18-years-old,” she told reporters after officiating the Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival here on Friday.

Teo said MCMC, however, had not prescribed any specific technology that platforms must use for the age verification process.

According to her, the government will provide a reasonable period for social media platforms to implement the age verification process for existing accounts before enforcement action is taken.

“For existing accounts that have yet to complete age verification, MCMC is still discussing a reasonable timeframe after engaging with the involved social media platforms, including TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.

“Those who fail to complete verification may have their accounts closed, or the social media platforms may need to use artificial intelligence to ensure users are aged 16 and above,” she said.

Teo said the government had previously decided that children under the age of 16 were not allowed to open or own social media accounts on platforms with more than eight million users in Malaysia.

She said the two codes were published following engagement sessions with industry players, civil society organisations and stakeholders conducted since the beginning of this year.

Earlier, in her speech, Teo said that from January to April this year alone, a total of 23,367 online scam cases were reported involving losses amounting to RM680.3 million.

She said that since the Safe Internet Campaign was launched in January 2025 until April 30 this year, more than 11,000 programmes had been carried out nationwide involving over 1.8 million participants comprising school students, youths, parents, educators, senior citizens and local communities.

PETALING JAYA: The new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief’s update on the Arm Holdings case has confirmed that his predecessor, Azam Baki, jumped the gun on the probe into the RM1.1 billion investment deal, says a government MP.

Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan pointed out that MACC chief commissioner Abd Halim Aman had said the case was still active while the investigation was far from complete.

This means Azam’s recommendation to file charges against two people over the case was premature and careless, said the DAP vice-chairman.

“(Azam’s) statement was made while MACC was still in the midst of questioning former minister Rafizi Ramli. Questions arose at the time as to how MACC could already recommend charges when the investigation itself was incomplete.

“Halim’s statement proved that investigations are ongoing and that more information is required, including from people abroad. So how could Azam recommend filing charges when investigations are still ongoing?

“Azam’s premature statement is a good example of the turmoil the commission is embroiled in,” he said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Halim said MACC is seeking mutual legal assistance to obtain statements from several people in Taiwan and the UK regarding the RM1.1 billion deal involving the economy ministry and the UK-based semiconductor firm.

Halim, who took over as MACC chief on May 13, added that the probe might take some time since it involved two other jurisdictions.

MACC had recorded statements from 26 people in its probe, including Rafizi and his former aide, James Chai.

Syahredzan said Azam’s premature statements only contributed to the already-severe trust deficit plaguing the anti-graft agency, despite Malaysia’s improved standing in the annual corruption perceptions index.

“As an anti-corruption agency, MACC’s reputation should be completely untarnished,” he maintained.

The DAP MP nonetheless said Halim’s transparency was a “good start” to restoring public confidence in MACC.

“Under its new leadership, MACC must ensure it no longer takes any action that could erode public confidence and it must rebuild its credibility day by day.”

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General (A-G) is opposing the Malaysian Bar's bid to challenge the decision to classify Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's Yayasan Akalbudi case as No Further Action (NFA).

Senior federal counsel Nurhafizza Azizan, appearing for the A-G, told the High Court during case management of the Bar's leave application to commence judicial review proceedings before Judge Alice Loke Yee Ching today.

After hearing submissions from both parties, Loke fixed June 30 to decide whether the proceedings should continue or be stayed pending the disposal of related appeals at the Federal Court.

According to court documents, the Bar claimed that the A-G's decision to grant an NFA to the Umno president was irrational, unreasonable, and contrary to the public interest.

It also argued that the decision lacked adequate reasons or sufficient supporting material, and was contrary to established prosecutorial guidelines.

The Bar is seeking a court order to compel the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) to recharge Zahid over all 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering involving Yayasan Akalbudi funds.

The Bar filed the application naming the A-G and Zahid as the first and second respondents, respectively.

On Jan 8, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said that after reviewing all materials, new evidence and the results of further investigations, including prosecutorial assessments, it found that the available evidence was insufficient to support the continuation of the prosecution on all charges.

On Jan 12, the A-G said the decision to classify Zahid's corruption case as NFA was made only after carefully reviewing the six representations submitted by the Bagan Datuk member of parliament.

He said the Attorney-General's Chambers did not act arbitrarily, noting that the representations raised issues of fact and law which required further examination.

On Feb 3, Zahid applied for a full acquittal following the A-GC's media statement on Jan 8 declaring that no further action would be taken on the charges.

On Sept 4, 2023, then High Court judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, now a Federal Court judge, granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to the 73-year-old politician in relation to the case.

KUALA LUMPUR: The caretaker of an unlicensed children's welfare home in Gombak was today sentenced to 11 years' jail and five strokes of the rotan for sexual offences against children.

Ampang Sessions Court judge Norshila Kamaruddin handed down the sentence against Retna Velu after he admitted to the offences involving two boys at the welfare home in Batu Caves.

The court ordered the jail sentence to run concurrently from the date of his arrest.

Retna, clad in a black T-shirt, appeared subdued throughout the proceedings and was unrepresented.

The 25-year-old accused, who was unrepresented, broke down in tears when he pleaded for a lenient sentence, telling the court he was working as a lorry attendant.

He was also seen turning his gaze towards the victims' family members who attended the hearing, while wiping away tears with his shirt.

On April 9, Retna pleaded guilty to charges involving physical and non-physical sexual abuse under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, as well as committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature under Section 377C of the Penal Code.

The offences were committed between November last year and March this year, involving boys aged between eight and 10.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Malek Fauzie prosecuted.

Lawyers Kirthen Subramaniam and Premila Subramaniam held a watching brief on behalf of the victim's families and Pertubuhan Kebangkitan Tiga Tangan Selangor, which exposed the alleged decade-long abuse at the unlicensed home.

Two former residents, who had just turned 18, came forward with allegations of abuse.

The New Straits Times had reported that at least 12 out of 36 occupants of the home had been subjected to abuse.

Medical examinations conducted also showed old and new injuries aligned with the alleged sexual abuse of some male children.

Police arrested and remanded four suspects, including the home's 31-year-old owner and three workers aged between 17 and 25.

Initial checks found the home was not registered with the Social Welfare Department and had instead been operating under a private company.

The DAP secretary-general said basic principles of parliamentary democracy must be respected, particularly when someone is elected as a lawmaker.

"While I respect their stance, as they may say they are frustrated and so on, they should have stayed until the end of the term.

"They know it has been more than three years now, so even if they resign, there will be no by-election.

"So, that is why I say the principle should be that when we win under a party's mandate, we must remain until the end of the term," he said.

Earlier, Rafizi, who is Pandan MP, and Nik Nazmi, the Setiawangsa MP, confirmed they would take over Parti Bersama Malaysia.

Bersama is a small political party registered on Dec 2, 2016 in George Town, Penang, by its founder, Tan Gin Theam.

Menurut kerajaan negeri Tamil Nadu, TASMAC ketika ini mengendalikan sebanyak 4,765 kedai arak runcit di seluruh negeri berkenaan.

Arahan tersebut dikeluarkan selepas pihak berkuasa menjalankan pemeriksaan menyeluruh di seluruh Tamil Nadu bagi mengenal pasti premis arak yang beroperasi dalam lingkungan 500 meter dari kuil, sekolah, kolej dan stesen bas.

Hasil pemeriksaan mendapati sebanyak 276 kedai arak berada berhampiran rumah ibadat, 186 premis terletak dekat institusi pendidikan manakala 255 lagi berada berhampiran terminal bas.

Jumlah keseluruhan premis yang diarahkan tutup adalah sebanyak 717 buah.

Menurut pegawai kerajaan, langkah itu diambil bagi memperketat kawal selia penjualan arak selain menangani kebimbangan masyarakat mengenai kedudukan premis TASMAC berhampiran kawasan sensitif awam.

TASMAC merupakan syarikat milik kerajaan negeri Tamil Nadu yang memonopoli penjualan minuman keras di negeri berkenaan.

The Malaysian Bar is seeking to challenge the Attorney-General's (A-G) decision to discontinue Zahid's 47 charges involving criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering linked to Yayasan Akalbudi.

On June 27 last year, High Court judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh dismissed the Bar's application for leave to initiate judicial review proceedings.

The judge ruled that the Bar had failed to rebut the legal presumption that the A-G had acted lawfully in applying for the DNAA.

The High Court also held that the A-G was not obliged to disclose the reasons or basis for the decision to discontinue the prosecution against Zahid.

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite the perception of a lucrative salary, some young General Practitioners (GPs) are struggling to make ends meet, resorting to side jobs such as e-hailing in the current economic climate.

Even more disheartening, some have been forced to take out personal loans to keep their clinics running.

A doctor who only wanted to be known Luqman, 33, said there are times when the clinic he opened in 2022 recorded a negative net income due to various costs incurred at the end of each month.

Speaking to Berita Harian, he said GPs have to deal with rising medicine prices annually and the new minimum wage, which adds to their financial burden.

"I decided to leave the public health sector in 2022 because I felt my career with the ministry was not secure, and the workload was overwhelming, before deciding to open my own clinic in Sepang.

"What I can say so far is that my clinic is in a struggling phase. I am still looking for the best way to survive due to rising costs every year, while on the other hand, earnings have decreased.

"At times, the income is even negative. I need RM35,000 to RM40,000 a month. It means we need 10 to 15 patients a day," he said.

Dr Luqman said he was forced to take out a personal loan to cover operating costs, in addition to rising medicine prices and the minimum wage.

He added that he was not spared from doing side jobs, including driving e-hailing vehicles and working as a locum doctor at other clinics to supplement his income.

Asked about his plans, he said he did not rule out the possibility of switching careers if the situation does not change.

He said his alternative plan would be to enter the insurance or sales sector.

"If there is no government intervention to help empower private clinics, I expect to need an exit plan.

"GPs do not operate just to make a profit, and we are not second-class doctors, but instead are the backbone and are ready to help and empower the health service system," he said.

Another GP, who wanted to be known only as Dr Jay Chay, said he left the government service in June last year due to a lack of work-life balance.

He then entered into a joint venture with a company to open a private clinic in Sepang, Selangor, holding a 49 per cent stake.

However, he said he still struggles to meet the revenue target for the clinic, as most patients prefer to purchase their own medication.

Dr Jay said the income earned by the clinic usually only covers about 60 per cent of its operational costs.

"I also face a problem when most patients who come prefer to bring their own medication bought through social media, which does not have Health Ministry approval."

KUALA LUMPUR: Rising costs and an influx of general practitioners (GPs) have left most of the country's 10,000 private clinics struggling to stay afloat due to a drop in patient numbers.

In fact, over 70 per cent of these GP clinics are recorded to have incomes below RM60,000 per month, leaving them struggling to continue operations.

These findings were identified by the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) in a study involving nearly 2,000 clinics nationwide.

MMA president Datuk Dr R. Thirunavukarasu said that based on the findings, the Health Ministry has been urged to ease congestion at government clinics by referring basic health cases to GP clinics to help empower their services.

He said that, according to the MMA study, about 21.1 per cent, or 380 clinics, earn less than RM20,000 a month; 32.4 per cent (583 clinics) earn between RM20,000 and RM39,999; and 18.4 per cent (332 clinics) earn between RM40,000 and RM59,999.

"This is the level where clinic operations face many challenges to their sustainability due to rising operating costs and increased regulatory burdens, alongside competition from unregulated online services.

"If the various issues that have plagued them for over 20 years are not taken seriously by the ministry, we are concerned that more clinics will close, which could collapse the private primary healthcare system in the country.

"We do not have official data on the number of clinic closures, but it is expected to involve hundreds," he said.

At the same time, Dr Thirunavukarasu said only 17.8 per cent of clinics enjoy a comfortable monthly income exceeding RM80,000.

To date, there are more than 10,000 private clinics operating nationwide.

He said there was a significant increase in private clinics after the Covid-19 pandemic, caused by the termination of contract doctors and the lack of a clear career path for medical professionals.

"The struggle with income among GP clinic doctors is related to the contract system and the lack of a clear career path provided by the ministry previously.

"The heavy workload among young doctors causes them to tend to leave the public service and take the risk of opening clinics and building careers as GPs because they feel unappreciated," he said.

He said he expects the situation to improve following the ministry's gazetting of the amendment to the Seventh Schedule under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Regulations 2006, which took effect on April 2, regarding consultation fees that have not been revised since 2006.

"We express our gratitude to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad for his continuous involvement, proving that primary care is not merely rhetoric but a priority," he said.

Additionally, Dr Thirunavukarasu said of greater concern is the interference of Third-Party Administrators (TPA) or insurance companies that restrict treatments, an issue that has persisted for a long time without any regulatory policy for GPs over the past 20 years.

"In terms of policy, the ministry also faces challenges where regulation is only enforced on the administrative aspects of private clinics rather than empowering GPs in the same way as public health clinics.

"GPs are not included in the ministry's governance, particularly regarding the development of GPs. To resolve this issue, the policy must be correct, and there must be a specific policy for the development of private clinics," he said.

He said GPs have been increasingly squeezed since 2015, especially with commercial stakeholders pushing for the separation of consultation and medication dispensing.

"Even worse, many advertisements on social media show clinic premises being sold to other parties because doctors can no longer afford to sustain operations.

"The MMA previously proposed that doctors in the public service be assigned to health clinics and emergency wards to help facilitate their career paths," he said.

He claimed that private clinics are also excessively regulated by the authorities concerning issues such as the size of treatment rooms, toilets, and doors, while at the same time, medical services such as tele-clinics and pharmacies do not face the same strict regulation.

Beliau berkata masalah kekurangan doktor harus ditangani secara tuntas bersama-sama kementerian lain dengan lebih bersistematik.

Dzulkefly berkata pasukan petugas khas itu turut meneliti cadangan penambahbaikan insentif kepada pegawai perubatan termasuk elaun perpindahan bagi menggalakkan penempatan di Sabah.

“Saya mahu perkara ini dilihat dalam jangka panjang... tidak ada sebab mengapa insentif seperti ini tidak boleh diberikan kepada doktor yang komited untuk berkhidmat di Sabah,” katanya.

Beliau juga berkata seramai 42 pegawai perubatan siswazah telah ditempatkan di Hospital Duchess of Kent di sini baru-baru ini.

Sementara itu, Dzulkefly berkata kementerian akan mengemukakan cadangan balas dalam masa terdekat berhubung langkah pengurangan perbelanjaan operasi oleh Kementerian Kewangan yang melibatkan sektor kesihatan.

Baru-baru ini, Kementerian Kewangan mencadangkan pengurangan perbelanjaan operasi berjumlah RM5.4 bilion membabitkan sektor kesihatan dan pendidikan tinggi sebagai sebahagian usaha mengukuhkan kedudukan fiskal negara.

“Ibu mangsa memaklumkan kepada pihak hospital bahawa kanak-kanak itu sebelum ini berada di bawah jagaan seorang pengasuh di kawasan Sungai Putat, di sini,” katanya dalam satu kenyataan di sini hari ini.

Dzulkhairi berkata, sebelum punca kejadian terbongkar, mangsa menerima bantuan pernafasan menggunakan tiub di Zon Merah Jabatan Kecemasan dan Trauma Hospital Melaka pada 11 April.

“Susulan itu, sepasukan pegawai dan anggota dari Cawangan D11, Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah (JSJ) Melaka telah menahan pempengaruh lelaki berkenaan kira-kira jam 9.30 malam 15 April.

“Suspek yang juga seorang pempengaruh media sosial disahkan tidak mempunyai rekod lampau dan hasil ujian saringan air kencing terhadapnya didapati negatif dadah,” katanya.

Tambahnya, tiada sebarang barang rampasan diperoleh dalam tangkapan berkenaan.

“Suspek kini direman selama tujuh hari bermula 16 April hingga 22 April 2026, sebelum tempoh reman disambung selama lima hari lagi bermula 23 April hingga 27 April.

“Kertas siasatan telah dirujuk kepada Timbalan Pendakwa Raya Melaka hari ini dan masih menunggu arahan lanjut,” katanya.

Pelbagai catatan dalam talian yang merangkumi tempoh beberapa tahun nampaknya menunjukkan jejak digital hubungan di antara Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim dengan ahli perniagaan Vinod Sekhar.

Untuk rekod, Anwar yang juga Pengerusi PH – dalam dalam afidavit mahkamah minggu lalu – menafikan mempunyai hubungan rapat dengan Vinod yang terlibat dalam saman RM30 juta difailkan oleh sekumpulan pelabur multinasional dan bekas pekerja.

Beberapa hubungan terawal yang ditemui dalam talian sejak 30 Mei 2018 iaitu kurang sebulan selepas PRU ke-14 yang menyaksikan kebangkitan pertama kali PH ke Putrajaya, diikuti pembebasan Anwar dari penjara.

Pada hari itu, Vinod menulis tentang bagaimana Anwar telah melawat rumahnya sehari sebelum itu. Vinod juga menyiarkan gambar Presiden PKR itu bersama dia dan isterinya, Winny Yeap.

“Alangkah besarnya penghormatan yang luar biasa apabila rakan lama dan abang saya, Anwar, singgah melawat kami. Hari itu adalah hari Wesak, jadi kami semua berada di rumah.

“Rasanya seperti baru semalam kali terakhir dia berada di rumah kami beberapa hari sebelum pemenjaraannya yang tidak masuk akal dan direka-reka secara politik,” tulis ahli perniagaan itu.

Dia berkata Anwar menghabiskan masa selama dua jam bersama keluarga itu dengan “berbual dan ketawa tanpa henti”.

Tiga bulan kemudian – pada 17 Ogos 2018 – Vinod berkongsi satu lagi gambar dia bersama Anwar dalam satu catatan di Instagram.

Pemimpin PKR itu, yang memakai anduh, melawat Vinod yang sedang dalam proses pulih daripada serangan jantung.

"Saya semakin kuat dari sehari ke sehari, tetapi jantung saya berhenti seketika dan tulang rusuk saya retak telah memperlahankan saya sedikit sebanyak.

“Tetapi ia adalah satu rangsangan sebenar apabila rakan, abang dan PM saya yang seterusnya, Anwar, singgah melawat lewat untuk memastikan saya melakukan apa yang diberitahu oleh Winny dan gadis-gadis itu,” tulis Vinod.

Akses ke pejabat presiden

Selain lawatan peribadi, Vinod juga berkongsi gambar dia bersama Ahli Parlimen Sungai Buloh ketika itu, R Sivarasa, semasa berkempen untuk Anwar kembali ke parlimen melalui pilihan raya kecil kawasan parlimen Port Dickson pada Sept 2018.

Anwar kemudian muncul sebagai pemenang di kerusi yang dikosongkan oleh Danyal Balagopal Abdullah dari PKR, sekali gus menyaksikan ahli politik kanan itu kembali ke Dewan Rakyat sebagai ketua pembangkang.

Beberapa tahun kemudian, pada Mac 2021, Anwar menyiarkan ucapan takziahnya kepada Vinod di Facebook selepas ibu ahli perniagaan terbabit meninggal dunia.

"Menziarahi rakan baik saya, Vinod, yang ibunya yang tersayang meninggal dunia malam tadi.

"Mendiang Sukumari Sekhar ialah isteri kepada bekas pengerusi Institut Penyelidikan Getah Malaysia, BC Sekhar," kata Anwar, yang turut disertai oleh isterinya, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Enam bulan sebelumnya – pada permulaan pandemik Covid-19 pula – Anwar terbang ke Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, untuk meluncurkan sebuah portal berita dalam talian, The Vibes, yang dimulakan oleh Kumpulan Petra milik Vinod.

Kemudian pada 2022, semakan Malaysiakini menunjukkan Vinod adalah antara segelintir individu yang mempunyai akses ke pejabat Presiden PKR di Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, tempat para pemimpin parti berkumpul pada waktu-waktu menjelang sesi angkat sumpah rasmi perdana menteri.

Vinod kemudiannya dilihat hadir di sidang akhbar pertama Anwar sebagai perdana menteri, yang diadakan di Rumah Kelab Sungai Long, Kajang, pada 24 Nov 2022. Ia diadakan sejurus selepas upacara angkat sumpah di hadapan Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Sejak kebelakangan ini, Vinod juga telah bercakap secara terbuka tentang hubungan rapatnya dengan Anwar.

Dalam ucapan selamat hari lahir kepada Anwar pada 10 Ogos tahun lalu ahli perniagaan terbabit menulis mesej panjang lebar yang memperincikan betapa dia mengagumi Anwar sebagai seorang "rakan" yang didakwanya telah dikenali selama 45 tahun.

Dalam laporan yang diterbitkan di The Vibes dan halaman Facebooknya, Vinod mengimbau kembali zaman dia berpihak kepada Anwar walaupun ia bukan tindakan yang popular namun “ia betul".

Bercakap di audio siar The Good Cast Show di YouTube, Vinod mendedahkan bahawa isterinya telah menulis sebuah buku bertajuk Electing Anwar bagi menceritakan pengalamannya sebagai "lalat di dinding" yang "melihat semua yang berlaku" semasa pilihan raya dan fasa pascapilihan raya.
