Upgrade for Gaming Rig

Greetings!

Currently, these are the specs of my rig:

CPU: i5 3570
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LX2
GPU: Leadtek GTX680
SSD: Intel 330 240GB
PSU: SeaSonic 650KM Active PFC F3 (X-650)
RAM: Kingston Value 8GB DDR3 RAM (4GB x 2)
Casing: Corsair 500R

I am planning to do minor upgrade for the rig, most probably the GPU and RAM(?). Can the current system handle GTX980? Or, can I just perhaps settle with GTX970? I know that the 970 has that 4GB issues, but if I am planning to stick to 1080p only, it should not much an issue.. right? Btw, the target is to get good FPS on GTAV at 1080p resolution with very high / ultra setting.

Also, should I upgrade the RAM to 16GB? If yes, is 2 x 8 a good combination, or perhaps I could just get another pair of 2 x 4, and settle for two pair of dual channel RAM.

Thanks everybody!

Migrating Windows to New Harddisk

Guys, currently Im having Win7 in one of the partitions in my WD 320 GB. Im planning to get a new harddisk with bigger capacity and putting it as the main harddisk, preferably with capacity of 1TB.
The typical way would be to re-install the Win7 in the new harddisk, but I just wondering is there any other way i.e. ghost the partition of windows into the new harddisk. Will I encounter any stability problem in the future? Will Win7 license be an issue later as it may recognize different hardware setting?

Pls help and advise. Thank you guys!

NEED FOR SPEED™ THE RUN

WELCOME TO LYN'S OFFICIAL THREAD FOR

NEED FOR SPEED™ THE RUN

GAME INFO

In The Run, players will participate in an "underground world of illicit, high stakes racing," in a race from San Francisco to New York, with stops through Las Vegas, Denver, Detroit, and many other locations, making it the first title in the series to use real locations. The cops aren't the only ones after the player though, as the player "blows across borders, weaves through dense urban traffic, rockets down icy mountain passes and navigates narrow canyons at breakneck speeds." There are over 300km of track, three times more than Hot Pursuit, making it the biggest Need For Speed game.
The Run is powered by DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, making the game the first non-shooter and one of the first console titles to use the engine, which provides visuals and car physics that "hug the road even at top speeds all built around a gripping storyline." Additionally, Need for Speed Autolog, the Need for Speed franchise's social competition functionality, which was introduced in Hot Pursuit and was previously used in Shift 2 Unleashed, is also back as it will continue to track career progression and compare game stats.
The game features quick time events, with the player for the first time in Need for Speed history, exiting their car and traveling on foot. These events won't always be about harsh success or failure states. In some sections there are branching outcomes, so if the player mangles a certain button press, they'll get another chance to pull through.
The driving model of the game is described as "sit somewhere between Shift and Hot Pursuit", not as arcade-styled as Hot Pursuit. The Run employs a large range of real-world vehicles, seemingly taking in the usual mix of muscle cars, street racers and refined exotics, described as "each car presents a different driving challenge for the player." Exclusively digitized for the game is the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Pagani Huayra.

Source: HERE

LYN OFFICIAL RACERS:

LYN ID - Origin ID
vivre Making a PC demo would have required us to take resources away from developing the full PC game therefore detracting from the overall quality.

We choose to concentrate our resources on making the full game as great as it could be rather then use the resources to create a demo. We hope that once you get your hands on the full game on November 15th you’ll agree with our choice.

Why use the Frostbite 2 engine?
One of our goals with Need for Speed The Run was to set the bar for visuals higher than any previous Need for Speed game, and working with DICE’s revolutionary Frostbite 2 engine, we’re able to do exactly that. The visual quality in Need for Speed The Run is unmatched among action racing games.

Three games in one year is a lot, what happened to the once-yearly Need for Speed?
Black Box was the studio that put Need for Speed on the map, and has been developing Need for Speed The Run for more than two years already. Even though we’re more than six months away from release, we already have some groundbreaking gameplay footage to show our fans at E3. Currently, there are three studios working on Need for Speed games, with Black Box and Criterion focusing on action racing experiences, and Slightly Mad Studios working on adrenalin-pumping simulations.

You said this year Need for Speed goes to the next level, what does that mean?
This year, we’re pushing the limits of everything you’ve expected from a Need for Speed game, with a gripping storyline, awe-inspiring visuals, and the most intense racing experience you’ll find anywhere.

What can we expect from Autolog in Need for Speed The Run?
Autolog is back and better than ever. We’ve found plenty of new ways to encourage friendly – but heated – competition between you and your friends. Autolog is now a staple to the franchise and a feature we’ll continue to grow with each Need for Speed game.

How good are the car physics in Need for Speed The Run?
The development team is hard at work to create road-hugging physics that are in line with what you expect from an action racing Need for Speed game.

[SOLVED] Blinking MOBO LED

Guys,

I woke up this morning to discover that my PC is turned off. I left it running to download several files. So the PC turned off abnormally. Weird sound was also coming from the speaker as if I were to switch on and off the PSU repeatedly. I was shocked.

Quickly I turned off the power, laid my chasis down and tried to power it up again.

Below is the video that I captured. You can notice the LED light is blinking once I turned on the PSU and not the CPU yet. The sound was coming from the speaker, in rhyme with the blinked LED.

My rig spec as follow:

CPU: Intel Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz
Mobo: Asus P5K
RAM: 2 x 2GB Team Xtreem Dark PC2-6400
GPU: MSI 460GTX 1GB
PSU: Silverstone Strider ST50F

p/s: no overclock, running on stock speed.

Has my PSU blow? If yes, what's the Silverstone warranty coverage, is it 3 years? or lifetime warranty as ACBEL...
Or, has my MOBO kaput?

Thank you.

GPU or MOBO problem?

What has happened?

About 3 months ago, it was quite late in the night. I was playing NFS:Hot Pursuits on my PC when suddenly I received a phone call, which somehow required me to go somewhere. Thinking that I would be returning back on the same night, I left the PC on PAUSE mode (pressed escape button which brought up the in-game menu). Unfortunately, there was an emergency and it has resulted in me returning home after about 2 days. When I reached home, I notice that the PC was still running. Unfortunately the monitor was out of display (completely dark with the LED power blinking) i.e. as if the cable was not connected to the VGA card. I was quite shocked and quickly give it a hard shutdown.

After leaving it for about 30 minutes, I turned back the PC on and guess what, the similar thing was still there i.e. the display went dark. Quickly, I shut it off and pulled out the BIOS battery to reset the CMOS. Fortunately, the PC went back to normal after the basic configuration at CMOS. I also managed to get back into Windows. Phew!

The next day, as usual as I was trying to get my NFS daily dose, I had a big surprise. The frame rates were not as smooth as before. Since NFS is a racing game where everything moves fast, these jerky gameplay was really an annoying thing to look at. I simply gave up and went straight to bed. The next day, I came back early from office with only one purpose, to troubleshoot the issue and fix it ASAP. Now, before I shared the things that I have done, let me share with you the basic info of my system.

CPU: Q6600 2.4Ghz running @ 3.4 GHz
Mobo: Asus P5K
RAM: 2 x 2GB Team Xtreem
Graphic card: Asus GeForce GTX 460 1GB TOP in PCIe 16X & Gigabit 8800GT 512 MB in PCIe 4X (both are running in nvidia multi-card setup, as shown below. The left is 8800GT and the right is 460GTX)

[attachmentid=2098914]

For your info, the multi-card setup allows you to dedicate one of the lower spec card to run as your Psyhx card. In my case, I used 8800GT as my Physx card to get better framerate in Mafia 2, and it really helped as advertised by nVidia. No complaint! Big thumbs up to Nvidia

In addition to information above, please also take note that Im using original Windows 7 Home Premium, and the NFS:Hot Pursuit copy is legit. Therefore the problems here, were not originating from some pirated softwares/OS.

What I have done so far?

a. Reinstalled NFS:Hot Pursuit
Problem not solved, jerky gameplay was still there

b. Redownloaded the nVidia driver, and re-installed.
Problem not solved, jerky gameplay was still there

c. Reset the BIOS and reboot
Problem not solved, jerky gameplay was still there

d. Reset the BIOS and take out 8800GT card, leaving only 460GTX as primary card (as shown below)

[attachmentid=2098915]

This one turned out to be a bit different from what I have experience at above. I can’t even load into my Win7. It simply stuck at the boot screen (shown below). Very annoying. I repeated step a and b (as above) without 8800GT and still, I didn’t manage to get into Win7. Tried also other boot options: Last Know Good Configuration and even the Safe Mode has also failed.

[attachmentid=2098917]

e. Reformat my Win7
I then decided for the extreme and ultimate solution (I thought lah..) by formatting my Win7 through clean install. And guess what, even with that my Win7 couldnt load. What I found funny and confusing was, right after I re-plugged in 8800GT next to 460GTX, the windows loaded properly like there was nothing wrong with the OS. I was so puzzled and confused. It seemed that 8800GT is required and a must to get the PC and Windows running.

f. Ran benchmark on 3DMark11
This completely puzzled me again. I found out that with SIMILAR setup, I was at the 2nd last group; the typical score was about 2700, but I’m getting around 2100 only. That’s quite a gap, considering SIMILAR setup.

[attachmentid=2098919]

Now what??
I don’t know what else to do. I’ve been trying to get it fixed but the same thing/result happened. I was quite frustated. Not only I didnt manage finish the game, I also couldn’t run other game properly. My Team Fortress 2 ran fine only for 15 minutes when suddenly Windows reported driver error. It is really frustrating, seriously. I can’t also offload my HD playback processing to my GPU, as it would report driver error after few minutes of playback.

What really puzzles me is why I couldn’t return back to original single card setup? If my 460GTX is problematic, there is no artifact found during gaming. Is my mobo already kaput? >.<

Thanks for dropping by and Im looking forward for some good advices. Thanks!

My rig spec is as follow:
CPU: Intel Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz
Mobo: Asus P5K
RAM: 2 x 2GB Team Xtreem Dark PC2-6400
GPU: MSI Cyclone 460GTX 1GB OC & Asus 8800GT Top 512 MB (multi card setup)
PSU: Silverstone Strider ST50F

Main problem:
I have been playing NFS: Hot Pursuit for long time already, and enjoying all MAX gaming details and resolution. Recently, something happened to my windows that it didnt manage to boot up properly, and sometimes it stuck at the loading screen only. I have somehow managed to fix that problem and now it`s working fine. But I have some other annoying issue. I noticed that my gaming has been impacted. I already uninstalled and reinstalled the cards and drivers but the problem is still there. It is really annoying to play in laggy environment, and I really miss my smooth FPS before this.

I have been googling around for solution but couldnt find any. APpreciate somehere to help me. Please, I miss my pursuit with the cops! >.<

Side problem:
Another thing that I tried but couldn't check properly was: I tried to revert back to single card setup (with only 460GTX onboard) but everytime I did that (uninstall nvidia card, reboot, let windows reconfigure standard video driver, shut down, remove 8800GT card, reboot), it will get stuck at the loading screen. I tried also to go into safe mode and it didn't want to.

Helpppp ~~
No matter how long I leave it there, it will just simply stuck there. My solution for now, is to push the reset button, and after that it will log in into desktop like nothing wrong happened before..

Question is, what caused this to happen?

And, could you guys please suggest way to resolve this..
Guys,

Since I am not that rich, I am great fan of second hand items. Like the old saying says "someone's trash is someone's treasure". LYN was a great platform to find this thing particularly second hand PS3 games.

However, lately there are so many online retailers have opened their thread in the garage sales as well. So, whenever I was looking for particular game I will be presented with so many first hand retailers rather than second hand (which priced cheaper than first hand one).

I am therefore, suggesting to LYN Admin, to open up subforum for this second hand game/items so that it won't mixed with those retailers. No offense though to them, as I am trying to optimize my gaming cost too..

What others think about this? I believe there are others who are having this same issue as well. Perhaps, second hand graphic cards, CPU, and other thing as well.
