Malaysian that wants to marry a Thai

I was searching around for the process and things to do especially on the Thai side of things, but I couldn't find much, so here's me sharing for anybody else that is interested to know what are the steps and things to watch out for. I'm not going to describe the process to register your marriage in Malaysia as the process is more tedious compared to if you were to register the marriage in Thailand first. So below are the steps you need to do to get married to your future wife in Thailand. Be prepared to feel like you are in the Amazing Race!

1. As a Malaysian first you must first go to JPN Putrajaya to get a single status declaration. You need to bring a copy of your wife passport as her details will be needed to indicate in the document, your intention to marry her.

2. When you reach JPN Putrajaya, go to the 1st floor marriage and divorce counter. Inform the information counter and they will give you a form to fill up. Once filled up you will need to get this form signed by commissioner of oaths which there is an office on the ground floor. Once done go back up and get your queue number. Once submitted you should be able to get the single status declaration on the same day.

3. Once you have the declaration paper then you need to go to the nearby Ministry of Foreign Affairs to have the document endorsed. This can be done on the same day.

4. Once you've have the endorsed document you may now make arrangements to go to Thailand and bring this document to the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok to have the declaration translated to Thai and endorsed by the embassy. You will also need to get your passport translated to Thai and endorsed as well. And finally you will need to provide your personal details like your home address, employment and salary details along with submitting the IC copy of two witnesses (ideally your parents). Your witness or future wife doesn't have to be present. Each page of translation will cost about 400 Baht. And they will need 3 working days so you will have to come back again in 3 days time to collect your translated documents.

5. Once you have these translated documents, you will need to go to the Department of Consular Affairs to have these documents endorsed by them. The main branch is in Watthana but they also have a branch in Central World. You need to go to this website to make an appointment first.

https://qlegal.consular.go.th/customer/create
There are two options. Express same day or standard which will require 3 working days. When submitting you will need to pay some fees for each document.

5. An important thing to do at the same time there, is to get your wife passport copy translated to english and endorsed there as well, along with her birth certificate. These two documents for her will be needed when you want to register your marriage again back in Malaysia along with copy of translated Thai Marriage cert. But for marriage cert you will need to do that after you get your marriage cert obviously.

6. After you have your documents endorsed, you and your wife may now try to go to any Ampur to get a marriage registration and certification. Previously many in forums said it can done in a day but from my experience going to and calling a few Ampur, they will tell you there is a queue and you will need to wait at least 2 months or more. One Ampur even said we have to wait for a year. So for this part this will be a potential big challenge as you will need to try your luck with various Amour or Khet. (Google this word if you want to know more as I'm not going to explain this here). To register your wife will need to only have her ID card and her "Thai House book", which is basically a home residency address book. And you will need to bring along 2 witnesses and also a Thai to English translator. Be ready to take a lot of time here to find the right Ampur or Khet as each Ampur and Khet will have different answers but most will likely say it will take time.
For this part, it may be worthwhile getting the help of a marriage agent if you are going to be just overwhelmed by the hunt. But be prepared to pay quite a fee for this kind of express service and make sure you are careful not to be scammed. Go to trusted companies and not freelancers.

7. Once you passed this part you are done! Congrats on your marriage and completing this leg of the Amazing Race.

8. Now that you have your Thai Marriage certificate your next step is to get it translated to english and endorsed at the Department of Consular Affairs Thailand. One thing to be prepared is that if any of the translation is incorrect, it will need to be redone and you will have to spend more time. Each translation can take up to 1hr or more. So be prepared to run around for all this including potentially paying more if you have to go to another translation agent which there are many at the Department of Consular Affairs. Over there each page cost around 300 Baht.

Once this is all done you should be pretty much ready to head back to Malaysia and bring all those translated to english documents for the purpose of your registration in Malaysia.

Good luck and hope this helps those who are trying to find more details of the process in Thailand.

For me I managed to do mine in 2 weeks which is considered fast. But for many of you, be prepared to spend more time running around. It's always better to have a mindset that things may not go perfectly fast enough so that you and your future wife will not get stressed and frustrated
