Snickers maker apologises for advert suggesting Taiwan is a country

BEIJING (REUTERS) - Mars Wrigley, maker of the Snickers candy bar, apologised on Friday (Aug 5) for a Snickers product launch, which Chinese social media users said suggested that Taiwan was a country.

Videos and pictures showing a Snickers website promoting a limited edition Snickers bar and saying the product was only available in the "countries" of South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan triggered an outpouring of anger on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo on Friday.

Mars Wrigley later published an apology on its Snickers China Weibo account and said the relevant content had been amended.

All she wanted was to find a man to settle down with. But not just any man of course. He had to fulfil her criteria for height, educational level and earnings.

So she went to a matchmaking agency, and paid more than $2,000 for a package of five dates with men they would find her. The agency was said to be well-known, and was offering a half-price promotion on a $4,000 package.

But she was so disappointed with the experience, she asked for a refund, which was refused, she told Shin Min Daily News.

The 39-year-old bank manager, a Ms Chen, who is 1.63m tall, said her expectations of a potential partner were "not high". He had to be taller than her, with the same level of education, earning at least $8,000 a month. He also had to be Chinese and a Buddhist or a free thinker.

But her first date was with someone who earned less than her, "with an annual increment of tens of dollars". After complaining to the agency, they agreed to give her an additional complimentary date.

But although subsequent dates were with guys who met her criteria, she didn't find a connection with any of them.

"I felt one of them was a little too old while another shared an ice cream with me on the first date, which I found slightly odd. We exchanged numbers after that but didn't contact each other."

Ms Chen also felt the agency’s services were unprofessional, and said its consultants took months to set up dates, or were hard to contact.

She went on four dates organised by the agency over a year and a half, each at an additional cost of up to $400.

She then asked for a refund but was offered an upgrade with a dating coach and two complimentary coaching sessions instead. She insisted on getting a refund.

Ms Chen said her only relationship had been during her undergraduate days in university. But the couple found they weren’t compatible and broke up after two years.

Then she was busy with work and taking care of her parents. She had tried online dating but found it unreliable, and finally went to the agency because she wanted to settle down by the age of 40.

Shin Min quoted a spokesman for the agency as saying: "As the client's initial request did not meet the requirements for a refund to be processed, our manager offered to upgrade her package instead. But knowing that she would like to discontinue our service, we have reached out to her to see how we can resolve the issue."

Fall in value of expat pay packages in S'pore in 2020, with reduced benefits and salaries

SINGAPORE - Companies in Singapore spent less to employ expatriate middle managers last year, with overall pay packages marked by reduced benefits and a dip in salaries.

But cash salaries for expatriates here remain the fifth highest globally, according to a survey published by data and knowledge provider ECA International on Wednesday (Aug 25).

The average pay package for a mid-level expatriate here last year was US$225,171 (S$305,400), or around US$7,300 lower than the previous year. That made Singapore the 17th most expensive location globally for companies to send expatriates to.

Japan overtook Britain to top the list, with an average package of more than US$405,000.

Mr Lee Quane, ECA's regional director for Asia, noted that the leaner expatriate packages in Singapore mirror similar declines elsewhere, such as in Hong Kong and Thailand.

This was partly driven by "lower costs of accommodation and other benefits" commonly provided to white-collar expatriates, he said. But they were also earning about US$1,000 less in cash salary than their peers in 2019.

"Combined with its ranking as the location with the best quality of living globally (according to ECA's location ratings), these trends serve to increase Singapore's attractiveness to expatriates looking to move to the region," Mr Quane noted.

The Republic will also be appealing to companies looking to set up a regional hub, given the cheaper cost of hiring expatriates, he added.

In Asia, the value of expatriate packages in Hong Kong fell by over US$5,000 in 2020 to about US$280,000, despite a slight average salary increase of US$265.

"While salaries for expatriates in Hong Kong rose by less than 1 per cent, employers were able to benefit from lower accommodation costs and reduce the... financial support for housing compared with the previous year," said Mr Quane.

In Malaysia, there was a significant dip in the cost of benefits - close to US$2,000 on average. This was attributed to lower rents amid a lack of demand for expatriate accommodation due to the Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions.

In Thailand, the average value of a pay and benefits package for overseas employees fell by close to US$18,000. The country is no longer among the top 20 most expensive locations to employ mid-level expatriates.

But Taiwan has joined the ranks of the top 10 most costly locations.

This was largely due to a rise in the costs of benefits, which surged in part due to a steep increase in housing rents amid Taiwan's initial success in mitigating the spread of Covid-19.

In becoming the 10th most expensive location to hire expatriates, it overtook countries like South Korea and Australia.
