Hi all, I'm not sure where to post because my questions seem to go everywhere

This will be my 1st PC builiding experience
I'm going with the mini-ITX format, because I don't want it taking up a lot of space. (Plus, it's cute! )

Please advice on the build, I'm sure there is plenty to improve on.

Here is the parts list I've gathered (Budget: RM 4~5k, but as value for money as possible):

Case --> Cooler Master Elite 110 --> RM 150 (lelong.com.my)
CPU --> Core i5-4690k --> RM 800
CPU Cooler --> Zalman CNPS8900 --> Not available locally
Motherboard --> ASUS Z97I-Plus --> RM 650 (lelong.com.my)
Memory --> Low Profile 2x8GB --> RM 309 (lelong.com.my)
Storage 1 --> TBD
Storage 2 --> TBD
Storage 3 --> TBD
VGA - GTX 970 --> RM 1250 (Zotac) (lelong.com.my)
PSU --> Be Quiet! Pure Power L8 600w --> Not available locally
Monitor --> TBD
Keyboard --> TBD
Mouse --> TBD
TOTAL --> RM 3159 +- RM 100

My requirements for this rig:
1. Last 3~4 years
2. Powerful & Quiet

The storage I'll transplant from my current laptop and get more in the future.
The monitor, keyboard, and mouse I'll do more research, but I don't plan on spending a lot on them.

The biggest problem i'm facing now is getting the CPU Cooler and PSU.
I really want something powerful yet quiet, and those 2 components are the results of my google research.

Asus U41SV screen

This will be long, please bear with me.

I got my U41SV only about 3 months ago, and 2 weeks before this, it committed suicide by jumping off the table.
Luckily, the hard drive was intact, but the screen was gone. The LCD had a line cutting through it's diagonal and the upper left part was black, while the lower right part was still functioning.

So, I decided to get a new screen. I asked around if the warranty covers laptop falling, and the answer was no, and that I'll need RM 400 ~ RM 500 to get it done by ASUS. I decided to get one and install it myself. Since I'll be DIY-ing, I decided to upgrade the screen from 1366x768 to a higher resolution one, specifically 1600x900. After much research, I finally decided on the AUO B140RW02 V.1, which is 1600x900 and is matte. I made sure to check that the connectors are compatible.

When the LCD arrived, I was delighted and promptly installed it. However, I'm horrified to find white vertical lines plaguing the screen. Also, the LCD has multiple colour tints to it, changing every time the laptop starts up. I have attach some pictures to show what I'm talking about.

Is there any way to remedy this? Any help will be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!

[attachmentid=2483502][attachmentid=2483504][attachmentid=2483505][attachmentid=2483506][attachmentid=2483509][attachmentid=2483512]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGXPGCVzfIk

Acer 3830TG VS Dell 3350

I've been looking all over, it's amazing nobody compared this two laptops before.

I'm looking for a light, long lasting and powerful enough for light gaming laptop, and have narrowed down my choice to these two.

here is what I found out about them:

Dell 3350 <-----------> Acer 3830TG
2 kg <-----------------> 1.8kg
2x usb3 <-------------> 2x usb2
1x usb2+esata <-----> 1x usb3
Cd drive <------------> No cd drive
backlit <--------------> No backlit
?? Battery life <------> 6hr proven
RM 2676 <------------> RM 2400--

I think the Dell is very nice looking and would love to have it, but I really don't know about it's battery life. Site says 8-cell, and laptopmag review says can last about 6hours playing video. Can anyone confirm this? And, the battery's gonna stick out, I'm not too thrilled about that. = =

The Acer is light, looks quite ok, and has proven no problem playing video for 6hrs (If I remember correctly, the review is an Acer 4830TG, but since they use the same batteries, I'll assume they'll be same). But, nobody seems able to confirm the availability date and price?

Can you guys help me? Any advise about their strengths/weaknesses will be greatly appreciated. ^ ^

This is a thread dedicated to said topic. Apply: Apply for it at the start of March 2010. Form can be downloaded at Embassy of Japan website.
Be sure to follow ALL the instructions on the form and prepare the nessasary documents.
Reference Point 6

2. Wait: Wait after you send your application. You can hand it in either by hand or by postal services. The waiting period is about 2 to 3 weeks. They will send a
letter to you if you are successful. Test: If you are selected, you will be asked to sit for a written test. General subjects are English and Maths. Physics is a must for Science stream courses.
Engineer & co add Chemistry to the list while Doctor & co add Biology. Japanese language is not mandatory but will be a bonus.
Reference Point 1, Point 3, Point 5

4. Interview: If you pass the test, you will be interviewed.

5. Result: Only those who have passed the interview will be entitled for the scholarship. You will be notified in around OCT 2010 and will go to Japan in April 2011.

Reference:[attachmentid=1278968]

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

What Point 3 Academic Requirement meant:

SPM/SUEC/Matriculation: A
STPM/A-Level: B+
Diploma: CGPA 3.4
Matriculation: A/LC
either choose English from above or use MUET: 5 or 6

Natural Science A & B:
Maths, Chemistry, Physics/Biology, English

Social Sciences & Humanities:
Maths, English

As you see, there are 3 screening processes before you receive the scholarship. The percentage of success is about 5%, but don't let that bother you.
In order to raise your chances of success, you should STUDY HARD. The first round if screening, according to my speculation, depends heavily on the resume u submitted, which will include your latest qualification. So future to be students, take the chance now to draw a beautiful report card. There will be about 2 months time after you finish your SPM/STPM/UEC, so you can use them to polish your knowledge in case you haven't been doing well. The Monbugakusho papers' standard are below UEC, lower than STPM and harder than SPM.

Please everyone who has experience applying for this scholarship, share us your insights and wish us luck~!!!

Useful Info Link: Study in Japan

As for me...
Studying in Japan has always been a dream of mine, but the $$ problem persists, so i hope by getting this scholarship I will be able to fulfill my dream. I have just finished my UEC exams, and I know the result will be bad cause I have been slacking. Nevertheless, I decide to try my luck.

I've narrowed down to a few
but can't decide which to choose.....

Dell Vostro 1310 (RM 1099)
13.1'' WXGA
Intel C2D T7250 2.0 GHz 2 Mb L2
2 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8400MGS

COMPAQ CQ40-401AU (RM 1550)
14.1'' WXGA
AMD Turion 64x2 2.1GHz
1.5 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200

HP DV5-1007cl (RM 1400)
15.4'' WXGA
Intel C2D P7350 2.0 GHz 3 Mb L2
4 GB RAM
Intel GMA X4500
[+] Blu-Ray Drive

Benq Joybook S41 (RM 1500)
14.1'' WXGA
Intel C2D 7300 2.0 GHz 4 Mb L2
2 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8600MGS

The main point I'm looking at is the graphics, since I want to
play DMC4 and watch 720p videos. But I've heard that the
G84/G86s are faulty... and also the HP's max 8GB RAM capability
and Blue-Ray drive (maybe I can sell it? XD) are alluring too,
but it seems bulky and I don't think X4500 can play DMC4... the
Compaq's HD 3200 is better that X4500 but still falls short of 8400MGS...
On top of all that, price is definitely an issue...

So... could you guys give some opinion?
