Now, there is a query whether the Ipoh tailor who made the lounge suits for the Perak state representatives had vested interest.

PETALING JAYA: After more than three years, controversy relating to lounge suit for local government councillors has surfaced.

Taiping MP and Pantai Remis state representative, Nga Kor Ming (picture), is alleged to have given a lounge suit sewing contract to a Ipoh company – Ethan & Elton, belonging to his wife, Wong Seow Ching.

The lounge suits are meant for local government councillors. Ironically all the councillors appointed under the Pakatan Rakyat have since been fired after the Barisan Nasional took over the goverment in 2009.

And the detractors are saying this was done without an open contract. The contract is deemed to have been given when Pakatan Rakyat was the state government for a brief period.

Blogger M Shashi, who is also Shah Alam MIC division member, on Saturday revealed documents from the Malaysian Companies Commission (SSM) and a letter from the Ipoh City Council’s organisation development and administration department confirming that the contract was given to Ethan & Elton.

The documents can be viewed at Shizone http://www.shizone.com/.

The SSM document revealed that Wong is one of the company’s directors and it was registered 42 days after Pakatan took over the state government.

This was done even though Ethan & Elton had offered the highest bidding price of RM650 compared to four other companies.

The contract was given to the company based on an instruction from the then Pakatan-led Perak government.

Open tender

When contacted today, Shashi said that he was not the first person to make the allegations.

“The information first appeared in another blog called azmikelanajaya.blogspot.com/ and I found the SSM documents on kexpress.net/.

Nga. when contacted, brushed aside the allegations on the grounds that Ethan & Elton had obtained contract through an open tender.

He said the firm got the tailoring job after an open tender exercise conducted by the Ipoh City Council.

“(Then menteri besar Mohamed) Nizar (Jamaluddin) and I were never on the tender board, and we did not interfere in the decision-making (either),” he said.

“I challenge them (the bloggers) to lodge a report with the MACC.”

He added: “The allegations are totally unfounded and defamatory. If they dare, they can lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission (MACC).”

On his wife’s role in the company, he said that his wife is only a sleeping partner.

French PM calls Israeli leader a “liar”; didn’t realize mic was on.

Safe to say Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu isn’t the most popular guy in the world leader club.

Several outlets are reporting that President Obama and French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy were overheard grousing about their Israeli counterpart in what they thought was a private conversation following a press conference at the G20 economic summit last week. Unfortunately, their microphones were still on, so the exchange was broadcast to the headphones of several reporters in a different room.

First Obama sniped at Sarkozy for not telling him France was going to vote for Palestinian membership in UNESCO. Sarkozy turned the topic to Netanyahu.

“I cannot bear him. He’s a liar,” Sarkozy told Obama, according to Reuters.

The U.S. president shot back, “You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than you.”

Media outlets initially didn’t report the exchange, considering it off-the-record. But a French website, Arret sur Images, posted it on Monday, and Israeli media ran with the story.

Reuters confirmed it, adding, “The technical gaffe is likely to cause great embarrassment to all three leaders as they look to work together to intensify international pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions.”

Obama’s critics on the right are already using it as fodder to attack Obama as a weak ally to Israel.

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation department officer was attacked by six men in front of his house in Sungai Besi here yesterday.

Moses Lawrence, 36, was closing the front gate of his Taman Sungai Besi Indah house to go to work in Putrajaya when the men, armed with parang, attacked him about 6.30am.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Adnan Abdullah said the victim, who had served in MACC for more than 10 years, was slashed on his left hand when he tried to block a man from slashing him.

"The victim, however, managed to run and entered his car, which he had left with the engine running, and drove away.

"He was sent to Serdang Hospital by his wife, who was also in the car when the incident occurred.

"He is warded at the hospital and in stable condition. Police believe that this was a robbery attempt."

Adnan said police were still investigating the incident, adding that no eye-witnesses had come forward yet.

It was learnt that Lawrence is an investigation officer attached to the MACC headquarters' forensics investigation unit.

MACC deputy director-general Datuk Shukri Abdul, when met at the hospital, declined to comment on the incident as it was being investigated by police.

"I cannot be making presumptions on what had happened. Neither do we know the motive behind the attack -- whether it was a robbery or some other motive."

An MACC source said he believed that the attack was not an attempted robbery as the assailants went straight for the victim and started attacking him, without trying to take any of his valuables.

"It is not a robbery. The victim was attacked by three men, who were moments later joined by three others."

Another source from the commission said the victim was one of the key officers investigating numerous high- profile cases.

"He is one of the officers whom we regard as an old-timer and is very well respected. He was involved in investigating high-profile cases nationwide, including conducting undercover jobs," said the source.

The New Straits Times visited the hospital and tried to get an inter-view with Lawrence but was not allowed to enter his room which is well guarded.

why now? Lynas has been approved for 3 years, MP Fuziah and various other opposition MPs were briefed 3 years ago for 4 days before the project even get the go-ahead. Well now is the best to incite fear amongst the people especially after the Japan nuclear disaster and the upcoming election this year. Fuziah is looking for a re-election. Why suddenly fear towards radiation? there is no risk of meltdown, this is not a nuclear reactor we are budiling with pure uraniums, this is just low level radioactive from low level waste (not concentrate waste) which will be properly handled by

1) Waste concentration? The waste is not concentrated. It is limed to reduce radioactivity. The protest group has lied about concentrating waste. There has never been concentrating. The lime process is also key to the safety of the waste. The lime process actu...ally reduces radioactivity and helps maintain safe disposal. This is one of the huge advantages to thorium waste over uranium waste. Uranium is often concentrated because near endless containment is an important part of it’s storage. This concern does not apply to low level thorium waste like we see with Lynas. Instead the approach is to lime it and not concentrate it so safety is maintained.

2)Lynas is not dumping anything. The waste is stored in an approved manner. The waste is dry and will be limed and can be made into concrete blocks from there. Dumping is a gross misstatement.

3) How long waste last? This is a trick question in a way. Radiation has a half-life however small. And it really is only radiation waste if it is above a “hazardous level. Lynas waste is never radioactive enough to reach the regulated level. The question relates to uranium waste where radiation levels are “harmful” for many years. This reasoning does not apply to thorium as well because the radiation is too low. So with the Lynas approach the most correct answer is to say it is never waste or harmful.

4) Legally accepted internationally, since Lynas ore, concentrate, and thorium gypsum is never at a dangerous level according to Australia, Malaysia or international standards, I can’t see how a court would rule against Lynas. But the point of the Malaysian government and the IAEA is to use the full knowledge available and evaluate and make sure the Malaysian public health is never at risk. Lynas supports and has cooperated with that approach. For now we will have to wait for the IAEA conclusions.

The extraction of rare earths raises a number of environmental and safety concerns because the ore in which rare earths are found are often associated with minerals containing radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium.

Health and safety issues that need to be addressed include radiation protection for workers, the public and the environment, the transportation of raw materials and the management of waste.

Human beings are exposed to very small levels of radioactivity in every day life. Thorium, for example, is naturally present in soil, rocks, ground and surface water, plants and animals in very low concentrations. Ingestion of food and water containing this level of radioactivity does not pose any threat to human health. * Note there are Thorium everywhere within the earth , chances are you cannot escape Thorium as long as you stay in the moon or earth. The food that we eat, the water that we drink and the air that we breath naturally has Thorium radiation already.

The radiation exposure limit set by AELB for the public is 1 mSv/year. The annual radiation exposure, in millisieverts (mSv)/year, in a number of daily human activities is as follows:

Smoking a pack of cigarettes daily 0.20 mSv

Medical or dental x-ray 0.39 mSv

Sleeping next to someone for 8 hours 0.02 mSv

Watching television 2 hours daily 0.01 mSv

Using a computer terminal 0.001 mSv

- The raw material that will be used at LAMP. On average, a Lynas worker will receive 2mSv/year (millisievert/ year) of radiation compared with 150 mSv/year received by those who smoke a pack of cigarettes daily or the 9 mSv/year absorbed by airline crew

- The radioactive element, thorium, in its raw material from Mount Weld was 50 times lower than those in Bukit Merah. At these levels, exposure to radiation is less than taking a flight on a commercial airline or using a mobile phone. It means you get more radiation exposure by taking a flight or using mobile phone

- The employees will be exposed to just 10 per cent of the additional radiation an average person receives in their daily lives, which is less than the exposure to a person getting a medical or dental x-ray once a year (0.39 mSv/year). Referring to Nuklear Malaysia's report, each person receives an average of 2.4 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation from their natural surroundings annually. The Asian Rare Earth raw material was tin mining tailings which contained high level of thorium, 50 times higher

-People worldwide smoke almost six trillion cigarettes a year, and each one delivers a small amount of polonium 210 to the lungs. Puff by puff, the poison builds up to the equivalent radiation dosage of 300 chest x-rays a year for a person who smokes one and a half packs a day.
By comparison, a worker in the Lynas LAMP refinery in Gebeng receives the equivalent of less than 3 x-rays per year.

-AELB also affirms that the projected radiation exposure levels in the Lynas plant for workers (average of 2 mSv/yr) and members of the public (0.002 mSv/yr) are within the limits set by AELB. So it is likely you have received more radiation whist looking at this Facebook page than is projected by NM that the public will receive in a year due to the Lynas plant.

Differences between Bukit Merah and Lynas

-Bukit Merah used ore of 80,000 ppm Thorium.

11ppm for every 1% of Rare Earths. The Mount Weld ore average is 626ppm as per Mr Shand's communication. The plant in Australia takes the ore to produce concentrate for processing in Malaysia. The 40% Rare Earths concentrate will be 1600ppm Thorium oxide in total.

-Great technological advances in recycling and waste management since several decades ago.

- Also people argue 7 people got cancer from 11 000 population from the Bukit Merah Incident. That represent 0.06% of the population NOT EVEN 1%. If we look at the statistic from national cancer on the past years we have 80,000 people with cancers from 27mil population which represents 0.3% of the population. So in reality 0.06% cases of cancers in Bukit Merah is lower than the average national level.
