Why the world will NOT end in 2012

QUOTE

Why the world will NOT end in 2012: Nasa scientist debunks conspiracy theories

By Niall Firth and Claire Bates

Skyscrapers crumble to the ground, fiery meteorites smash into Earth and a Tibetan monk cowers as a massive tidal wave swamps his mountain retreat.

It is a vision of the coming apocalypse thrillingly captured in the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

But fears that the world is due to end in December 2012 is just a myth fuelled by internet rumour, according to a leading Nasa scientist.

Dr David Morrison, who runs the space agency's 'Ask an Astrobiologist' service, says he has received more than a thousand emails from those worried that the world is due to end in 2012.

In an article published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Dr Morrison has answered the top 20 questions in an attempt to assuage these fears.

According to the theories on the internet, the calendar used by the ancient civilisation of the Mayans is due to come to an end in December 2012.

Luckily for conspiracy theorists, this coincides neatly with predictions by an obscure sci-fi author, who wrote about the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Sumer, that a planet named Nibiru will collide with the Earth on that date.

The Mayan calendar ends in 2012, but Dr Morrison said this did not mean the world would end

Fears have been further inflamed by an apocalyptic film called '2012' starring John Cusack, which is out this November. A quick search on Amazon reveals there are 175 books listed that deal with 2012 doomsday.

First off Dr Morrison dismisses the possibility that the planet Nibiru even exists.

He writes: 'The bottom line is that Nibiru is a myth, with no basis in fact.

'To an astronomer, persistent claims about a planet that is "nearby" but “invisible” are just plain silly.'

And Dr Morrison laughs off suggestions that the government has been complicit in hiding its existence from the public.

'Even if they wanted to, the government could not keep Nibiru a secret,' he says.

'If it were real, it would be tracked by thousands of astronomers, amateurs as well a professional. These astronomers are spread all over the world.

'I know the astronomy community, and these scientists would not keep a secret even if ordered to. You just can’t hide a planet on its way to the inner solar system!'

He also addresses the concerns of those who worry that the Mayan calendar is due to end in 2012.

'Ancient calendars are interesting to historians, but they cannot match the ability we have today to keep track of time, or the precision of the calendars currently in use.

'The main point, however, is that calendars, whether contemporary or ancient, cannot predict the future of our planet or warn of things to happen on a specific date such as 2012.

'I note that my desk calendar ends much sooner, on December 31 2009, but I do not interpret this as a prediction of Armageddon. It is just the beginning of a new year.'

He added although many believe prophecies by the sixteenth century seer Nostradamus predict the end of the world in 2012, there is no evidence he has correctly predicted anything.

He also tackles the belief circulating on some internet forums that an alignment of planets in our galaxy the Milky Way could in some way disrupt the Earth's gravitational field or reverse the Earth's rotation.

'A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. It has never happened and never will,' he said.

He added that although the magnetic polarity of Earth does take place around every 400,000 years scientists don't believe it will take place for another few millennia and there is no evidence it would do any harm.

Publicity for the film '2012' also comes under attack for stirring up fear about the date.

Like many Hollywood blockbusters nowadays, '2012' uses a sophisticated PR campaign which incorporates elements of 'viral' marketing.

In the trailer for the film, which plays on conspiracy theorists' fears that the truth is being somehow hidden, viewers are directed to a 'faux scientific' website.

The website purports to be the home for The Institute for Human Continuity, an entirely fictitious organisation which allows visitors to sign up for a lottery which will decide who will be saved when Armageddon comes.

'The whole 2012 disaster scenario is a hoax, fueled by ads for the Hollywood science-fiction disaster film “2012”,' he says.

'I can only hope that most people are able to distinguish Hollywood film plots from reality.'

Dr Morrison noted that a growing interest in outer space has led to a general 'cosmophobia', that is a fear of the cosmos.

He said he found people were frequently worried about the sun's magnetic field, solar storms, black holes and a rift in the Milky Way.

'Previously these would have merely been interesting astronomical ideas to explore, but now for many young people (who read misinformation about them on the web) they are objects of dread.

'This cosmophobia could be one of the worst long-term consequences of the 2012 doomsday hoax - to make people fearful of astronomy and the universe.'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...et-rumours.html

QUOTE

Boy aged just 13 is set to become a father

By Daily Mail Reporter

A 13-year-old boy is set to become one of the country’s youngest fathers after his 14-year-old girlfriend became pregnant.

The two children, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, attend the same school.

But the girl, who is several months pregnant, is in the year above the boy.

It is the latest in a history of under-age pregnancies in Poole, Dorset.

In 1997, Jenny Teague became the country’s youngest mother when she gave birth, aged 12, to daughter Sasha.

Two years later, sisters Charlene, 17, and Miranda Way, 15, from Poole gave birth within months of each other.

The local authority has obtained a court order to stop the children in the latest case being identified.

Sean Stewart became Britain’s youngest known father when, in 1998, at the age of just 12, his nextdoor neighbour Emma Webster, 15, gave birth to their baby in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire.

Earlier this year, another 13-year-old, Alfie Patten, from Eastbourne in East Sussex, was believed to have become a father after 15-year-old Chantelle Stedman conceived.

But DNA tests later showed that another 15-year-old was the father.

Earlier this year, Alfie Patten was believed to have become a father at 13 but the baby turned out not to be his

Teenage pregnancies are now at their highest for a decade.

And pregnancies among girls under 16 – below the age of consent – are also at their highest since 1998.

The Government has tried to cut teenage pregnancies by handing out free contraceptives and expanding sex education.

Most pregnancies among girls under 18 end in abortion.

Of about 40,000 pregnancies last year, more than 20,000 were terminated – the first time more had chosen this option than became mothers.

Abortions for teenagers have gone up by more than a quarter since Labour came to power in 1997.

Last year, the total number abortions in England and Wales topped 200,000 for the first time.

An animal who lives a long and healthy life but dies in the wild is not worse off than animals who spend all their lives pacing in enclosures.”

Fruno added that despite claims that zoos taught people about animals, Peta still wanted people to boycott them as animals were being exploited for entertainment.

The campaign is urging people against visiting zoos as no zoo could recreate the animals’ natural habitat, she said.

She also said no matter how much a zoo took care of its animals, it would never be able to offer the space animals needed.

Fruno also visited Zoo Negara last Septem-ber and observed that the animals at the nation’s oldest zoo were living in old enclosures which did not provide enough room or stimulation for them.

An article on Zoo Negara has been put on their website www.petaasiapacific.com.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...4693&sec=nation

the first movie that LPF didn't censored the dialogue. Syabas LPF for finally realising that 18SG films are for adults and adults knows swearing ain't really an issue

i usually felt robbed by teh cinema when their films were censored. so when i saw this film on friday i was pleasently surprised that they only censored one violent scene which consist of someone getting stabbed in the neck with a steak bone

but the rest of the movie you can hear mafakka, fak and fak yu. no censored!

nice..

btw. its a nice movie. sorta like the film se7en. i truly enjoice it.

It should have five. I have seen them with one, four, or six, as well as five.

‘I think it’s probably conjoined twins. It is quite feasible that it is a conjoined twin due to the first fertilised egg not completely separating. I have never heard of one before.’

The starfish, which has been put in a the Octopus tank so is with fellow eight-legged creatures, was found by Newquay-based crabber Gary Eglington in a pot off St Agnes.

The creature appears to be in excellent health and the fact that he was found inside the vessel would also suggest that he has no problem finding food.

The spiny starfish gets its name from the lines of bulbous spines that run along each of its arms.

At the end of each of these arms are photosensitive cells that can detect movement.

It is one of the most voracious members of the starfish family and feeds on a variety of both living and dead food including fish, shellfish, molluscs and other starfish.

It lives on rocky bottoms from surface to depths up to 600ft and is found in the Atlantic Ocean, the English Channel, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

Often blamed for attacks on mussel and oyster farms, fishermen would historically cut them up and throw them back into the sea, not realising this would actually result in more starfish as a single leg and part of the starfish’s central disc can replicate into a new animal.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...tish-coast.html

But she now fears she may have to sell it after going over budget.

She said: 'I am $3million over budget and I should have moved in over a year ago. I’m tiling the whole pool in platinum — that’s expensive!'

The Playboy and Baywatch star sobs whenever she visits the house, which she bought for £850,000.

She said: 'I’m going to sell it. I hate it. People commit suicide over constructions.

'Relationships break down over constructions and I can see why. It rips your heart out'

Anderson was speaking to former EastEnders star Joe Swash for a documentary called Pamela Anderson: At Home With Joe for Living TV.

She showed Swash, 27, and his film crew around the house and told him the financial situation was so bad that she lives in a trailer with her electrician boyfriend Jamie Padgett, 42, and her two sons Brandon, 13, and Dylan, 11.

She reportedly has just $4,000 (£2,400) in the bank and needs to spend at least $800,000 (£480,000) more to make the house habitable.

Last week it was revealed that she has signed up for a two-week stint as the Genie in Aladdin at the New Wimbledon Theatre.

When her guest appearance was announced, box office takings increased by 800 per cent, but she will reportedly earn only £375 a day.

Pamela is living in this trailer due to a legal wrangle with contractors over renovations on her plush Malibu home

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/09/29/...966_468x250.jpg

Nokia sues Apple - says Apple stole Nokia Tech

QUOTE

Nokia sues Apple for 'stealing' technology for iPhone

By Daily Mail Reporter

The world's biggest phone maker Nokia, is suing Apple for infringing a number of technology patents for their popular iPhone.

The Finnish company said Apple was 'attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation' by refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property.

It filed a lawsuit with a US court yesterday, which accused Apple of infringing 10 Nokia patents relating to technology covering wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption used in iPhones.

Ilkka Rahnasto, vice president, legal and intellectual property at Nokia, said: 'The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for.

'Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation.'

The move sets the stage for a future court battle between Nokia and its American challenger over an in-demand product.

Mobile phones are expanding their offerings to consumers, turning into mini-computers with e-mail, music and video available to users.

Nokia is the biggest maker of 'smartphones' but is facing growing challenges in the market from the iPhone and BlackBerry range.

Last week, Nokia announced a third-quarter loss while this week Apple reported a 47 per cent rise in profits.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...ne-patents.html

The Real Harry Potter

QUOTE

Real-life Harry Potter reveals why sharing the wizard's name has made his life a misery

By Beth Hale

The similarities are there - right down to a scar on the forehead.

But the biggest thing they share are eleven letters spelling out two short names. Harry Potter.

And as the dark-haired young man (the one without the glasses) pictured here can testify: being a real-life Harry Potter is not quite as magical as it might seem.

Any other name? The real-life Harry Potter, left, and his fictional namesake played by Daniel Radcliffe

Mr Potter has endured taunts from the public, police, phone companies and even a football referee - all because he shares a name with arguably the world's best known wizard.

Mr Potter, who was born in 1989, had eight peaceful years of being a schoolboy with a fairly ordinary name before JK Rowling released a book entitled Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, and everything changed.

Then Daniel Radcliffe, who at 20 is the same age as Mr Potter, brought the boy wizard to life and suddenly introducing himself as 'Harry Potter' became something of a minefield.

Mr Potter even had to show his girlfriend his passport so she would believe him when they first met and a bus company refused to issue him with a pass because they didn't believe he was telling them the truth when he tried to sign up.

Mother Tracey Shaw, 47, never dreamed that when she picked a name for her first child, that it would one-day be a global phenomenon.

'People used to assume that he was named after Prince Harry, and that was his nickname when he was very young - we called him Prince Harry,' she said.

'There was no such thing as Harry Potter at the time so I didn't have a clue the name would become so famous.'

Last night Mr Potter, from Portsmouth, in Hampshire, said he wished author Rowling had never used his name for her books.

'My life has changed completely since the books were written,' he said. 'At first I thought it might be quite a good thing to have the same name.

Daily grind: The real-life Harry Potter holds up the passport he was forced to show his girlfriend to prove his identity

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

'But now it is like someone has cast a bad spell on me, the reactions I get from people range from making fun to plain aggressive.

'Sometimes I wish JK Rowling had never used my name.

'People seem to forget that I was Harry Potter before the character. I was nine when the books first came out.'

It was Mrs Shaw who brought the first Harry Potter book home for her son to read. Neither she nor her son realised how it would take off.

'Whenever I was playing up at school, the teachers would make some joke about my name, which soon shut me up,' said Mr Potter.

'After 12 years of it I couldn't count the amount of times I've heard "You're a wizard Harry". It does wear a bit thin after a while.

'And I've heard all the puns about my wand.'

Apart from the joke, Mr Potter has a far more humdrum life than his fictional counterpart from Hogwarts School of Wizardry.

He works in the more mundane surroundings of Lloyds TSB.

Namesake: J K Rowling's character has brought misery to the real Harry Potter

Mr Potter said: 'When I got my job in the bank, they couldn't believe that I was telling the truth on my application form.

'I'm the only person in the building who doesn't have to use my full name when I'm talking on the phone.

'Beginning a phone conversation with the mention of my name is never a good start - it distracts people too much.'

And while the young stars of the film series have snapped up a string of multi-million properties, Mr Potter will be happy when he and girlfriend Philippa Hall, 18, manage to buy their first house together.

The young man, does however, share one key feature with his namesake, a scar on his forehead.

Film Harry gained his in a battle with arch enemy evil Lord Voldemort. Mr Potter ran into a lamppost aged 15.

The seven Harry Potter novels shot British author JK Rowling to stardom, with his adventures being snapped up by 400million eager fans.

Since the books were released they have spawned blockbuster films and spin-off merchandise, making the brand worth an estimated £15billion.

But the mega-money made by the wizard with the same name as him, provides little comfort to Harry.

Harry Potter claims it's 'like someone cast a bad spell' to have the same name as the fictional wizard

He said: 'No one ever believes that I'm telling the truth about my name. I had to show my girlfriend my passport, my bank card, and my driving licence to convince her that I wasn't lying.

'Even getting my season ticket for Portsmouth FC was a bit of a pain - I'm a massive football fan, but I had problems at the ticket office.

'First they didn't believe that my name was genuine, and when I convinced them, they thought it was hilarious. It's never-ending.

'I play a lot of football as well in a local league, and the match reports are always full of puns - 'Harry Potter cast a spell on the opposition and that kind of thing.'

Rowling has told how 'Harry' was her favourite boy's name, so if her daughter had been a son she would have been called 'Harry Rowling'.

Questioned about the choice Rowling has said in the past: 'Then I would have had to choose a different name for "Harry" in the books, because it would have been too cruel to name him after my own son. "Potter" was the surname of a family who used to live near me when I was seven years old and I always liked the name, so I borrowed it.'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12...ife-misery.html

Every Space Mission From 50 Years Looks Like

Ever Wonder What Every Space Mission From the Last 50 Years Looks Like on One Map?
By Adrian Covert

A Visual History of Space Exploration: National Geographic

Well, here it is. National Geographic has plotted the route of every space mission carried out over the last 50 years onto a map of the solar system, giving a nice visual look at the history of space travel.

Each line represents a different space mission, highlighting notable missions, including those from different countries, those of historical significance, and those which have failed. (The map doesn't seem to make note of the recent LCROSS mission, where a rocket plowed into the moon to probe for water.)

Did you know there have been three more missions to Venus more than Mars (43 to 40)? Check out the whole thing for yourself here

http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2009...s-looks-one-map
