Talk money with friends

Just something to discuss.

What's your take on having money arrangements with friends? Doing business together, loaning money to friends, or them being ur business clients etc.

I feel that its a bad thing to have such relationships, eventually friendship goes sour when u talk money with them. I try to avoid as much as I can.

How to argue with friend invested in ponzi ah?

As topic. That fella invested in ponzi and convinced that it will bring in good profits. Turned quite hostile when I mentioned it may be a ponzi scam. As usual the reasons given:

1. Daily payouts consistent mah, been going on for a year liao, i cant prove it is a scam until they break down
2. It's worth few hundred millions liao, can't be a scam lah

I dun care if that fella 14 floor after he lose his money la, but quite sien watching him pulling all other friends to join. Want to argue and help save them also waste energy

RM2.75k in Malaysia or GBP2.6k salary

Thinking of taking up audit in Big4 in UK. Working conditions wise UK is slightly better, more allowance, study break and less working hours etc.

Catch is need to break bond, allowed to pay back JPA in installments, total RM600k.

Take the following into consideration:

Tax rate is 5% in Malaysia, 20% in UK for starting salary

Hoping to achieve manager in 7 years, which pay is GBP5k in UK or RM7.5k in Malaysia. Tax rate is 40% for any annual income over 40k in UK.

Apologies if my figures are wrong, appreciate any feedback.

Investment banking vs Accountancy

Hi guys. I'm still studying but it never hurts to plan your career early.

I've just finished my A-Levels, received a scholarship and will be heading to UK this September to study Accounting and Finance, at the University of Warwick. With this degree, I'm currently considering two paths of careers, which are investment banking and accountancy. Just to mention, my mum is an accountant and has her own audit firm in a small town, whereas my dad is a remisier at an investment bank. I'm pretty familiar with the accountancy field, having helped at my mum's firm since I was small, as well as doing 2 to 3 internships at audit firms in PJ/KL. On the other hand, my knowledge regarding IB is pretty much limited to what I read from books (Liar's Poker, Vault Guide, Monkey Business etc) as well as research online.

This brings me back to my question, which path should I pursue? My dad doesn't really encourage me to go into IB, as the field is very competitive and the global economy looks gloomy atm. What he recommends is:

Complete my degree -> do 3 years training contract in UK at Big4 and attain ICAEW qualifications -> return to Malaysia and work for 2,3 years at Big4 -> attain an auditor license -> take over family's firm -> profit

It's a sensible idea from what I see it, good job, decent pay and slightly long hours. On the other hand, I'm looking at IB as a more exciting job, being more challenging plus having a lucrative pay despite its extremely long, unsociable hours.

Accountancy and IB jobs are in high demand in UK, so if I want to secure a job offer upon graduation, I'd have to participate in internships during spring week/summer hols starting 1st year (for IB) 1st/2nd year (for Accountancy). Currently what I'm thinking is, going all out for internships in IB during my 1st year in UK, if it doesn't work out or I don't like the lifestyle, then I'll start looking for internships in Accountancy during my 2nd year in UK.

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated. You're also welcome to give your views regarding a specific field. If possible, I'm looking for comments regarding:

Average starting salary
Average salary 10 years down the road
Future prospects
Social hours/lifestyle

P.S IB mentioned here refers to IB in UK, as I'm not considering pursuing IB in Malaysia.

Thank you.

Awkward situation

So there's this girl whom I have known for many years. Now we're in college together, and somehow my friends tend to tease us for being "just" good friends. They think we should be couples. It's just my friends poking fun into me I guess, but somehow things have become pretty awkward for me with her. We used to joke around, chatting casually with occassional laughs, but now I'm limited to polite "hi"s and "thank you"s and so on with her. Maybe it's just me thinking too much, but does anyone have ideas how to overcome this awkwardness?

I'm pretty silly, huh?

KYUEM

Well, so I've got a scholarship which covers my tuition fees up to university level. However, the scholarship requires me to start afresh my A-Levels at KYUEM, which is rather unpopular to the crowd (even to me) and most people seem to opt for Taylors and Sunway instead. So I was wondering whether any of you guys have any opinions of KYUEM you would like to share? So far I've heard some things, some bad, some good, so I ain't so sure whether to go to KYUEM or not. If not, I can appeal to redo my A-Levels at Taylors with a good chance of success. So what do you guys think of KYUEM? About its teachers, facilities and the crowd there.

P.S: I know taylors is good, no need to elaborate on that anymore.

Routes to Local Uni

Okay, looks like now I'm in deep shit lol.

As some of you might know, I achieved 11A+s in my SPM. Currently I'm doing my A-Levels in Sunway College. However, due to the fact that I'm going for an accountings degree in Uni, I am now considering local unis for my degree, because they're accredited by MIA, while private and overseas unis aren't.

Before this I never considered local unis, so I'm a bit confused now about the routes to local unis. As far as I know, I can do STPM, Matikulasi or Asasi, right?

So here's my problem.

a) Assuming I'll do fine in any of these programmes, which one will enable me to gain entrance to local uni more easily? Matric or STPM?
b) What's the duration for Matric?

Thanks in advance.

Need Violin Teacher Recommendation

Hi guys. I'm a college student, just started my GCE A-Levels at Sunway College. I've always loved the violin, but my hometown didn't have one, so I didn't take it up when I was small.
Now I'm wanting to take it up. Can anyone recommend me a good teacher around Sunway?

I can't really say I have a music background, although I fooled around with a cello for 2 years. (Funny my hometown has a cello teacher but not a violin teacher ). I just want to learn violin up to the extend I am able to play my favourite songs as a pastime. I don't really want to pass those bloody exams, but if its compulsary to improve my skills, then I'm fine with it. Someone help please~

Thanks in advance.

Help with my A-Level Subjects

Hi there guys, perhaps some of you remembered my posting here before regarding my A-Level subjects. Anyway, here's my problem, again . I'm taking A-Levels Jan 2013 Intake, with the initial subjects Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Economics. However, after taking Economics for a month now, I find Economics rather boring and dull somehow. I wouldn't say it's useless or unimportant, just to say that I'm less attracted to it. After much research on universities courses and requirements, I also found that economics isn't a requirement for most degree courses. So, I'm now contemplating switching from Economics to Chemistry, in order to widen my options.

Currently I'm planning to take a BA Accountings in Uni, but it's definitely possible I may change my mind in the middle of my course. So, should I switch from Economics to Chemistry? So I won't regret it if I do change my mind about what I'm going to do in the future. As far as I see, having 2 sciences pretty much opens up a lot more options, compared to just my single Physics currently. What are the bad sides if I do this?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are my A Level Subjects alright?

I'm pretty much interested in the maths field and love dealing with figures. So, I've decided to pursue an accounting degree in university. Of course, I may still do degrees in finance, economics, maths or statistics.

So here's my A Level subjects combination. I'm taking Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Economics, are they alright? I mean, they should do well to apply to any universities for degrees which I stated above, including top unis, right?

Actually I wanted to do accountings for A Levels, but my lecturer advised against that. She says that accountings is counted as a soft subject and may not be preferred by top unis. Hence, I replaced accountings with physics.

Still worrying little bit about my subjects combination, hope some sifus can advise me. Thanks.

JPA Scholarship Question

I'm sorry if there's already a thread for this, but i couldn't find it.

Basically, my dad has decided to send me to Sunway College for GCE A-levels Jan Intake. However, given my academic results, I stand a chance to obtain the MOE or JPA Bursary Scholarship. Here's my question, if I go for A-Levels Jan Intake, and I eventually get the scholarship in July, can i continue my A-Levels studies with the 2nd and 3rd semester fees paid for by JPA? Or do I have to start over fresh my A-Levels.

Thank you.

On Accounting

Hi guys, i've just finished my SPM this year. Currently i'm waiting for scholarships to study A-levels in July, after that i'll proceed to university for my degree. My plan is to study accounting in university. I've just been checking degrees offered by various universities, local and overseas too. I got a bit confused because there're lots of degrees related to accounting. Examples are BSc Accounting, Accounting and Finanace, Accounting and Economics, Accounting and Management etc.

So here's my question:

1. What's the difference between these degrees? Are they the same or not?
2. Would BSc Accounting only be better if i plan to study deep in the field of accounting? For example, would BSc Accounting and Finance, be half accounting and half finance, causing me not to focus so much on accounting?
3. What are the local universities known for its accounting degrees?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
