Malaysian documentary Kickstarter

Hi all,

I am not exactly a regular here in Kopitiam but I am coming to you guys with a plea for support on behalf of my fiance's Kickstarter campaign. It is a film project that she has been working on for 2 years and has been on the issue of statelessness in Sabah. Before I screw up further details on it, let me just quote her in a post she made on Facebook:

For almost two years now, my production partners and I have been working on a film entitled "Di Ambang: Stateless in Sabah". This is a film that focuses on two stateless families of Philippines descent and tackles the issue of stateless migrants in Sabah.

Throughout production, we followed our subjects through their daily lives, studying the socio-political implications on the life of migrants in Sabah. Production was on going even when the latest Sulu attacks in May occurred. Although many thought it was planned, the team and I had no idea how the skirmish in Lahad datu could impact our film so greatly.

We have funded this film through grants, donations and our own resources but we need just a little more to call it a wrap and that's why we need Kickstarter.

My partners and I have worked very hard on this film and we want very much to bring Di Ambang to the Malaysian and international audience but we can only do it with your help. Please give what you can and at the very least, share this with as many people you know. We appreciate it so much.

The Great Game Promo and Sale Thread

Hi guys,

This here's the new fantastic Game sales and promos thread. Please post all promotions/sales/price cuts/offers/preorders on any PC games that would be available here. This thread may also be used to organize bulk purchases or 4-player packs.

So, a few ground rules:
1- If possible, try to only post offers that are available in our region. We are not disallowing the use of proxies and whatnot to get around it, but we don't recommend it as its a little risky, so buyer beware.
2 - Any promos that are available for our country can be posted here, be it from an Online DD service like Steam or GamersGate or retail like TSB and youbeli.
3 - No referral sales allowed here. You will be warned and possibly suspended.
4 - Please limit the amount of OT posts here as it tends to hide promo postings and makes this thread a bit difficult to use. If you wish to discuss a particular game, please proceed to the proper game thread and for discussions regarding the store or service, proceed to their thread as well. For now, there will be no hardfast rule on this, so please do not abuse this right.
5 - CD-key only sales sites or sites that resell cheaper region games are NOT allowed to be posted here. No exceptions.
6 - "Gifters" (Those nice ppl that offer to buy games for you) are allowed to talk about their services here, but limit it please. I know you guys are very cordial with one another so please continue to keep that spirit intact.

Ok, here's a few guidelines that should be observed when posting an offer:
1 - Please state the platform/service, games offered, price change and duration of the promo

Hi guys,

Sorry for the delay since the thread about the new DD subforum was mysteriously removed (By magic pixies perhaps?), but before we crushed their bones and consumed their life force, we actually bothered to look through that thread and actually deliberate on the feedback provided and we are ~~quite pissed off that you mongrels would dare disagree with us! You CURS!~~ pleased to say that we have altered our intention to make a new subforum and have instead decided to do the following instead:
1) Restructure the Pinned Threads currently in GH. There will only be these pinned threads now:
Game Sales & Promotions
The one stop for all sales and promos to be posted. Doesn't matter if its online, retail or for 4 packs and whatnot.
Digital Distribution FAQs and General Discussion
General FAQ for DD in general and perhaps some OT discussions.
Game Design & Programming
To satisfy our CSR quota for the subforum.

2) All DD services can have their own thread but will not be pinned. Same for all the retailer threads (Pinned threads lose a bit of visibility when they're bumped anyway, so this would be better). Promos can still be posted here of course... We'll see how the trend goes.

3) We'd prefer if forumers can step up to maintain the threads listed above as its incredibly daunting and some of the work done by a few are pretty damned great and us mods can't really compare to that. So, if you're willing to take the time to take charge of this, drop a line here.

4) We'll be putting this into effect by the end of the week, basically just to get the thread starters selected.

This is still very much experimental and as such we'll change things depending on how the community builds around it, so air your grouses if you have any.

Petition to boycott the games of 2009

Hi guys,

I come to you with a plea... A plea to all PC gamers... To UNITE and stand together as ONE... To RALLY against the oppressive game DEVELOPERS who have been SCHEMING to take our hard EARNED $$$ for their own BENEFIT.

No longer will we TOLERATE these INJUSTICES that have been handed out to us and thus I ask my BROTHERS in ARMS to STAND UP and be counted! So, please VOTE for this petition so that we may end this reign of TYRANNY for good.

As you may notice, this isn't a poll (Because I truly abhor the idea of internet petitions), but basically a horrible joke acting as an intro to talk about:

THE YEAR THAT WAS... TWO OH OH NINE

So, how was the year for you guys? I would say its a splendid year that was great for PC gaming on the whole. We didn't really get shafted in terms of console port delays (And we got some awesome ports to boot) but it does seem to be a year where a lot of conventions seem to have been broken like having a truly great superhero game and Valve releasing a sequel within a year.

Let's not just focus on the games but all the other funny stuff that happened in the last 12 months. Everything from outlandish claims of "Cloud gaming" (Bet you forgot about that huh?) and "Server browsers are too complicated" to one having some truly innovative games based on the simplest ideas, we've had quite a roller coaster of a year. Or should this be kept in another thread?

As an aside, if you could summarize the entire year that was in one word or catch phrase, what would it be?

Mine would either be "The Year of the Self-Entitlement Complex" or "2009: The next 2007" (Simply because we had so many great titles this year)

How to get developers to listen to PC gamers

Another year gone by another boycott/petition failing to amount to anything.

But the magnitude of failure for the MW2 boycott really struck home this time around since it was also without doubt the most fervent (And most definitely the most righteous) boycott and at the same time became the biggest failure of a boycott (MW2 PC's first week of sales had eclipsed the ENTIRE sales of MW1 PC).

This whole concept of petitioning/boycotting has been around for ages, but it only really picked up steam around the time when the whole Spore controversy over its limited installs DRM last year. The community's reaction?

Pirate the game! Mark it down in user reviews!

The result? Spore still sold millions in its first week of release.

Since then, we've had numerous petitions/boycotts that have arisen but most of which fail on pretty much every level.

So, the simple flow is like this:
1) Developer announces some very bad feature of their upcoming game that is non-traditional and annoys people.
2) The community rallies in support and "threatens" the developers with the following methods:
- Pirating the game
- Not buying the game
- Launching a smear campaign against the developers
3) The game is released and the following usually happens:
- The so-called boycotters buy the game anyway
- Game sales don't look the least bit hampered
- New petitions popup claiming "Ok we've bought your game, now gives us the changes we threatened before"

Why am I suddenly talking about this? Well I bumped into this last night, but even before then I had pretty much convinced myself that boycotts generally don't work and all they ever do is show that PC gamers are full of hot air.

When L4D2 was announced, I was one of the many who were outraged that it was being released so soon, should've been an update for L4D1, etc. But after thinking on it for a day, carefully reevaluating everything they've shown, I just decided "Instead of screaming my head off in forums or being outraged about it, I'll just vote with my money". So, yes... I bought L4D2, because I felt that it really was worth my money despite my initial outrage and thus I purchased it.

With MW2, I too was outraged at the beginning but once I took some time to just calm down and reevaluate the situation, I realized that it was now trash to me and decided not to buy it.

So guys, there's no use in cursing the developers to hell, or threatening to boycott/pirate or making funny memes involving the changes they make.

Just keep quiet and vote with your money. If that doesn't work, then accept the fact that there really is nothing else you can do since all you've proven is that you are indeed part of the minority

[Lower Ping] WoW VPN/Proxy services registry

Hi all,

We've noticed a stark increase in the use of VPNs/Proxies/Low Ping Services in order to reduce pings for playing WoW. However this has led to an increase in the number of agents or parties that wish to offer such services to the members of this forum.

Keeping in line with our boards grouping policy, these services should be listed under the Services Noticeboard forum. We understand that that action would not be beneficial to WoW players and said agents as neither would be very noticeable to each other.

As such, we have come to a compromise.

All VPN agents or service providers may advertise their services in the WoW subforum through this thread. That way we can keep track of all the agents and providers in this subforum. Please PM either me or any other any of the other WoW subforum mods to get inserted into this registry.

In addition to that, each service provider should start and maintain their own thread over at the Services Noticeboard which will serve as support thread for all their customers. Therefore, for any grievances or issues with your provider, please head to their thread to discuss.

Few ground rules for all service providers:
1) If you con/swindle/cheat any of our members, you will be delisted and possibly suspended
2) If your service is deemed unfavourable by our members, you may be delisted
3) If you offer additional services that go against the WoW EULA or are unethical (Powerlevelling, gold farming, etc.), you will be delisted and possibly suspended
4) If you open a thread about your service after being listed, that thread will be closed and removed. Repeating this action may result in your delisting

Activision Blizzard

It was just announced today that Vivendi's Games division (Vivendi Games or formerly VUG) will be merging with Activision and be renamed Activision Blizzard. If you're wondering why "Blizzard" is in the title, its because VUG owns Blizzard and so they're using Blizzard's name because of their brand power.

WinXP unable to start under normal circumstances

Hi everyone, I've got a very weird problem with my PC. This happened a few days ago.

Up until recently, I never bothered to install SP2 onto my Windows XP machine (Which was still running with SP1). So, I finally bit the bullet over the weekend and installed it. But, after the restart, my PC crashes during the Windows loading screen (The bar keeps moving, but the PC is stalled already).

So, the only way I got it to work is to force it to run in Debugging mode. Except for some weird crashes and programs that rely on the some kernel STPD function to work, everything works as normal.

Now, I've got a few questions regarding this:
1) How exactly do you use this mode to do proper debugging on my normal mode?
2) Is there any way for me to view or make the startup logs in order to identify what's making my PC go bonkers
3) What exactly is disabled in debugging mode which is why my PC can run in it.

The much awaited "sequel" to Operation Flashpoint demo is here. The Armed Assault multiplayer demo features one map with 3 game modes (Including coop with bots for offline play)

I gave it a whirl just now and it still feels a lot like the original at heart (Except that the bots are ridiculously dense for some weird reason). Graphics and performance are pretty good on my dated system also.

Jade Empire coming to PC!

Bioware has finally decided to port Jade Empire to the PC. Titled Jade Empire: Special Edition, the game will feature better graphics (Duh!), improved AI, more enemies and content and an artbook.

Compatible DVD drives with DRMs

As some of you know, my Lite-On DVD drive was killed by SecuROM (In an attempt to install FEAR)

So, I'm now in the market for a new DVD drive but I don't want to suffer the same problem as before. I'd like to ask my fellow forumers as to what drives you guys are using to play your games and which are the ones that have the least conflicts.

In short, here's what I want to know:
1) What brand is your DVD drive. I don't really want a burner/combo drive due to the possible issue with Starforce, but if there's nothing else, I will settle for it.
2) Which of these DRMs work with the drive. SecuROM, Safedisc and Starforce. I'm looking for one that works with all three with the least amount of risk.

Okay, here's a quick FAQ on the differences between these 3 titles.

What is the difference between Counter-Strike (CS) and CS 1.6?
They are essentially the same. Its just that CS1.6 runs on Steam, meaning you need to be connected to the Net to play even on LAN.

What is the difference between CS and Condition Zero (CZ)?
CZ is basically CS but with a single player portion (Consists of offline bot play with goals and another game type called Deleted Scenes). The multiplayer component for both is exactly the same except that CZ has different textures for some maps. CZ can also be played on LAN without the need for Steam, so no net connection is required.

What is the difference between CS and Counter-Strike: Source (CSS)?
CS is a multiplayer mod for Half-Life while CSS is the multiplayer component for Half-Life 2. CSS plays similarly to CS but has better graphics, a physics engine and also ragdolls .

How can I get CS, CZ and CSS?
You can download CS for free if you own Half-Life or you can buy it at retail (Or via Steam). Same goes for CZ. CSS comes with Half-Life 2 and is not available separately. All of these titles are available online via Valve's online service aka Steam. (Requires credit card)

I can't find places to get CS, CZ or CSS. How to get it then?
At the moment, the official distributor of VUG games, Sendi Mutiara Multimedia, is not allowed to distribute any Valve game anymore as VUG and Valve are no longer together. So, finding a copy of any of these games at retailis not so easy. You can try looking for it at some retailers who are selling old stock or purchase it via Steam.

I don't have money to buy CS, CZ or CSS, where can I get it?
Too bad for you. They worked hard to make this game, work hard to get it then.

Can I play CS, CZ and CSS on LAN offline?
Yes, you first need to connect to the Internet, login to Steam, unplug your net connection and let Steam fall into Offline mode. After that, you should have no problem running LAN games. To look for LAN games, just go to the LAN tab in the Find Servers dialogue box. To host, just create a game.

CSGO F.A.Q.
Q) Where can I play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive?
A) CS:GO is currently available on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac.

Q)How do I activate the console?
A) Activate the console in Help & Options -> Game Settings -> Enable developer console. This will then allow you to open the console using the tilde key ~.

Q)How do I open the server browser?
A) The community server browser is available in the main menu, and can also be accessed from the pause menu while in-game.

Q) Can I host my own dedicated server?
A) Yes, the CS:GO dedicated server is available. Click here for more details.

Q) Can I make maps for CS:GO?
A) Yes, there is a new SDK available for CS:GO. Players can subscribe to new maps through the Map Workshop, where designers can get feedback on early versions of their maps.

Q) How do I play competitively?
A) Enter a competitive match using Find A Game -> Classic Competitive

Q) Why does my crosshair change size?
A) The crosshair consists of multiple parts. The most obvious section is the dot in the middle which is used for aiming. The traditional cross hatch moves as you move and provides rough accuracy. The brackets represent the weapon accuracy at all times including being stationary and firing.

Q) Why can I sometimes defuse the bomb faster than other times?
A) On the counter-terrorist side if you are carrying a defuse kit it will halve the defuse time. The defuse kit appears as a small pair of needle nose pliers in the lower right corner of your in-game UI.

Q) What are the minimum and/or suggested system specs?

Q) Why aren’t the characters solid?
A) In Casual mode players can pass through each other as their bodies are not solid. In Competitive mode the player’s bodies are solid and they cannot pass through each other. This also allows for player stacking in competitive mode.

Q) What modes are available in CS:GO?
A) CS:GO has two versions of the Classic Counter-Strike Gameplay, Casual and Competitive. It also has a Deathmatch mode and two gun progression modes: Arms Race, and Demolition.

Q) Will there be team match making?
A) Yes. It is in works by Valve

Q) Will there be a replay system?
A) Yes, Valve will be implementing this feature at a later date.

Q) What tools are there for spectating?
A) There are many ways to watch games from the Watch page in the game and from the TwitchTV streams featured here on the blog. Many spectator features are available when watching matches from within the game.

Q) How can I see my ping?
A) Ping is visible on the left side of the scoreboard.

Q) How many players are allowed on a server?
A) Official servers support 5v5 matches in Competitive mode, and up to 20 players in Casual mode. The scoreboard is designed to support up to 24 players.

Q) Is CS:GO available on the Mac?
A) Yes, CS:GO is currently available for both PC and Mac.

Console gaming perihperals, accessories and hardware

To stop people from constantly posting new threads asking about gaming hardware prices, here's a nice pinned thread where everyone can ask away nicely.

This way, forumers can easily refer back to previous posts regarding the prices of certain items and post their own requests here and not clutter the the main forum.

So, please post any questions pertaining to availability, price, and 'issues' regarding any item you want. I urge any retailers to please visit this thread and provide updates on their prices as well as further info.

Do note however that this is NOT a trade thread. Please do not make any deals here or offers to sell anything. Do that in the Trade Zone or by using PMs. You can link to other threads but do not discuss the deals here.
