CORONAVIRUS | Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the opening of cinemas would be announced by Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob next Monday.

“Finas (National Film Development Corporation) has discussed with television stations and cinema operators…not only on reopening of cinemas but also on how to get films into cinemas and drama on television,” he added.

He said the ministry was also looking into the condition of several welfare organisations that were supposed to look into the welfare of local artists.

Meanwhile, the Communications and Multimedia Ministry is reviewing laws governing the arts and creative industries, including the Copyright Act 1987, to protect the work of local artists and their right.

Saifuddin said discussions on the laws relating to creative industries, including on royalty, copyright law, as well as entertainment tax, were held last week with the stakeholders to provide the ministry with a “big picture” of the situation.

“We should have rules and regulations, but they should not be troublesome and at times, it is not the rules and regulations that are giving problems, but the bureaucratic red-tapes, so we have to look at the laws one by one,” he added.

He told this to reporters after visiting veteran actress Fauziah Nawi at her home in Taman Melati, Setapak, under the “Ziarah Kasih” programme organised by Finas.

Saifuddin also visited actress-cum-singer Mimi Loma, whose real name is Aminah Ismail, 74, at the PPR Seri Semarak.

KOTA KINABALU: Cinemas and beauty and health services have been allowed to reopen for business in Sabah starting June 17.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the operating hours of these businesses including hair and beauty salons for men and women, manicure and pedicure services and reflexology are to resume as usual but with strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Other services such as facial care are also allowed to operate.

“The SOPs set by the government, health authorities and local authorities must be adhered to at all times, ” he said in a statement here on Wednesday (June 17).

He also reminded the public to practise high hygiene standards and social distancing when out in public.

KUANTAN: Malaysians eligible for the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) can expect to receive the first instalment of the funds on Monday (Feb 26), says Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah (pic).

The Treasury secretary-general said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would launch the 2018 BR1M on a national level on Sunday (Feb 25).

"The money will help to reduce the burden of the cost of living of low-income earners.

"It will also have a multiplier effect on the economy, as people will use the money they receive on goods and help stimulate the economy," said Irwan after the launch of the Bumiputra Entrepreneurship Programme (Eastern Edition) 2018 here on Saturday.

He also said that in 2017, RM6.3bil in aid was given out to over 7.2 million recipients, adding that a slight increase in the figures was expected this year.
