Need Help regarding Sump Tank inlet

Hi guys, I have been keeping fish for quite a few years now however have been less active on the scene as I have been overseas for studies. Heading home soon, and am interested in addressing a problem with my current aquarium at home once i get back. Basically, my 6ftx1.5x1.5 tank has a 3ft sump filter. When we got the tank made, they made it so that the water inlet from the tank to the sump is at the bottom of the tank ( a small opening below the pans of glass at the corner). This makes it impossible to have fine gravel in the tank or large bottom dwelling fishes( ie; polypterus) as whenever that bottom inlet gets blocked by the gravel or fish, the whole water circulation + filtration gets affected. Anyone have experienced and overcome this problem before? as i wish to have a fully gravelled and planted aquarium, but havent found anyway of circumventing this problem. I know it is difficult without any pictures (as i am still overseas, i have no pictures of the inlet) but i hope my description is enough to get some help from anyone here. Any advice or suggestions are welcomed
