MBA after PhD

Hello. I have a PhD in Engineering and I know it sounds unconventional to ask what would it be to take an MBA after a PhD.

Just in case if you are unconvinced about PhD holders pursuing MBA, here are some of the courses:

1. Cornell University: MBA for Scientists and Engineers
2. University of Alabama: MBA for Scientists

Certainly, such MBAs are not offered in Malaysia, but my question is what's your points of views about PhD holders pursuing an MBA?

I wish to be a Head of School, Head of Department, Dean or Vice Cansellor in a private Uni or college someday.

Cheers!

Per month saving from income in 2009

Hello!

Year 2009 was a tough one for most due to economic turmoil. Some have been thriving through, while some struggles to make ends meet. Let's discuss how much you managed to save per month in year 2009 from your monthly income. Please state the following so we know how well each of us doing. Please state all values in RM.

1. Average Monthly Net income (After tax):
2. Average Monthly Expenses:
3. Average Monthly Saving:
4. Number of months out of job (if applicable):
5. Major Commitments:
6. Your job and Age:
7. Other comments:

Thanks!

I start with mine:

1. RM15,000
2. RM4,000
3. RM11,000
4. 0
5. NIL. No car loans and I rent a single room. No girlfriend also.
6. PostDoc Research Scientist in Australia, Age 29
7. Intend to move back home in Malaysia after my contract ends in year 2011. I save a lot because I had monthly net saving of RM2000 per month only while pursuing PhD for three years in UK. You could imagine how miserable I was to save RM24,000 per annum.

I have been years overseas, and hope to get to know the average saving amount in Malaysia.

Cheers,
Wiz Guy

Diabetic Meal

Food in Malaysia is not suitable for diabetic. Rice, noodle, bread are all packed with carbohydrate that transform into sugar. I have a friend , who is also on daily medication for hypertension and high cholesterol, 'scored' nearly 5 in a glucose test (about to have diabetes). Anyone suggest suitable meal? For example,

Breakfast: Oatmeal
Lunch: ??
Dinner: ??
Snack: ??
Fruit: No banana, no grapes!

Should one drink more water? I also know that one should take brown rice instead of the white, but how much brown rice could one take?

Thanks!

Working in Japan: Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka

Hello I'm WizGuy and nice to meet you. This is my second post, hope I could get some advice from you.

I'm applying a fellowship to do a postdoc research position in Japan sponsored by the Japanese government, and I have the choice of three places: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Monthly net income is 364,000 yen (no tax deduction) with a one-time payment of 200,000 yen as settling-in allowance. Insurance is covered, and there are 30 days of annual leave.

For those who have/had been living in Japan, could you please share the living expenses (among others) in Japan? Which of the three cities you would prefer?

I have no knowledge about Japan. I don't know Japanese, but I would be placed in a university to do research and Japanese language is not a requirement.

Please advice. Thanks!

Postdoctoral Position

Hello =) I'm WizGuy, well don't be fooled by my nickname, though I aim to be a Wiz Guy someday =) This is my first post, so allow me to greet "Nice to meet you" =)

I have been thinking if this thread should be put under the Education, but I think it fits more here in career because postdoctoral is a research position with salary (rather than stipend) and is subject to tax deduction.

I have a PhD in Engineering, and have been considering to take up a postdoctoral fellowship overseas. My doubt is as follows:

1. Is there any position for a postdoc in MY? What is the salary difference between a PhD and postdoc?
2. In academic, how does a university value the postdoc? Does postdoc provide the beeline to an associate prof or prof position?

Thanks for your advice!
