bypass air flow sensor

Hi guys, need sifus help on some issue. My friend recently bought a used putra year 97. Me myself is driving a satria gti so i know that both gti and putra share the same engine type 4g93p.
Damn, putra is so much more powerful than gti.

The thing im not sure is that my friends putra, the air hose between the air flow sensor and throttle body been modified with a mini open pod filter(the red thing). My gti the hose is connected back to the engine head. I was just wondering, whether in what way is this mod useful ? maybe more air for combustion through the bypass filter?

Anyway isn't this kinda ' fooling the air flow sensor' since the AF sensor isn't detecting the correct amount of air sucked, therefore sending wrong signal for the amount of fuel needed for combustion ?
Is there any side effect on this ?

Hope some sifus here can enlighten me. tq

in case u guys didnt understand... a picture is worth a thousand words

i need more power... which way to go ?

Hi, all sifus in lowyat.net. i need some advice from you guys. Currently my ride is a stock standard satria GTi year 99 with MMC ECU. But im not satisfied with the current power i get... so i'm thinking of upgrading.... hehe

Anwyay, i've got 2 choices in mind,
1st is to stay NA, get a K&N ram filter, extractor complete to exhaust, port and polish, or maybe getting a piggyback as well.... that costs around 4 to 5k i think.......

either...

2nd, go for turbo, get a TD04 turbo complete with intercooler, 1.5mm metal gasket to lower compression and full set and install into my 4g93p...i'm thinking of only boosting 0.5 bar........ dun wan to blow my engine, the cost is around the same. Anyway i'm having doubts going for turbo as i'm scared of the jpj stuff. If turbo, i mean, is it still legal on the road, and what will happen if in the future i want to sell the car ? Do i need to remove the turbo as well, because need to get inspection from puspakom.

AND, maintenance wise, my friends said, using turbo is like using drugs... get alot of satisfaction on power, but gives an impact, or damage slowly to the engine...

1 more thing... engine transplant to vr4, GSR, or mivec is out of the question, as my current engine is in really good condition and low milage ( below 90k ) .!!!
Don't want to risk getting a halfcut engine...

ANY ADVICE IS REALLY APPRECIATED THANKS!!
