Arsenal set to be bought by Yank

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/SPORT/football...nger/index.html

(CNN) -- American businessman Stan Kroenke neared a takeover of English Premier League Arsenal on Monday after terms were agreed on a purchase which valued the club at $1.2 billion. Kroenke Sports Enterprises (KSE) has agreed to purchase a 32% share from major shareholders Danny Fiszman (16.1%) and Nina Bracewell-Smith (15.9%) to add to the 29.9% they already own. The move, which is now only subject to due diligence, means KSE has also been forced under British law to make an offer for all outstanding shares.

An offer of $19,300 per share has been made to all remaining shareholders, who will have 28 days to decide whether or not to sell. If KSE -- who started their acquisition by buying a 9.9% stake of the team in 2007 -- obtain 90% of the North London side, they will automatically be required to purchase the remaining 10%.

Kroenke -- who also owns NBA franchise the Denver Nuggets, NHL outfit the Colorado Avalanche and Major League Soccer team the Colorado Rapids -- told the club's official website: "We are excited about the opportunity to increase our involvement with and commitment to Arsenal.

"Arsenal is a fantastic club with a special history and tradition and a wonderful manager in Arsene Wenger. We intend to build on this rich heritage and take the club to new success," he added.
Chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who will remain in the role despite the impending takeover, backed Kroenke to take Arsenal forward.

"The board of directors and I consider it a key responsibility to protect the ethos and spirit of the club," Hill-Wood, whose father and grandfather were also chairmen at Arsenal, said.

"Mr Kroenke, although relatively new to Arsenal, has shown himself to be a man who values and respects the history and traditions of this very special club that we cherish. We are confident that he will be a safe custodian of its future."
Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov has been involved with the club since 2007 and owns a 27% stake in Arsenal's parent company.

Uzmanov, who does not have a seat on the board of directors, has given no indication as to whether he will accept KSE's offer.

Manager Arsene Wenger -- who is contracted to the club until 2014 -- also gave his support to Kroenke.
"I have worked with Stan Kroenke at board meetings over the past couple of years and I believe that he has the best interests of Arsenal at heart.

"He understands the club's heritage and traditions and our ambition to run the club in a way which protects our long term future."

Arsenal are the third most successful club in English top-flight history, but the Gunners are without a trophy since their FA Cup final success against Manchester United in 2005.

Kroenke's potential purchase of the team currently second in the EPL table will take the number of foreign-owned clubs in the 20-team league to 10.

American's Randy Lerner and Ellis Short own Aston Villa and Sunderland respectively, with U.S. group Fenway Sports in possession of Liverpool and the Glazer family at the helm of Manchester United.
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased Chelsea in 2003, while Sheikh Mansour of the United Arab Emirates is the owner Manchester City.
Indian group Venky's control Blackburn Rovers, Egyptian Mohamed Al Fayed is owner of Fulham and Carson Yeung of China is in possession of Birmingham City.
Many have criticized the lavish spending and creation of business models that are difficult to maintain by some of these owners, but KSE stated their intention to avoid such pitfalls.
"It is KSE's intention that the business will continue to be run along existing self-sustaining lines."
The club have also confirmed no debt will be leveraged against Arsenal in order for the takeover to be completed, unlike previous buy-outs of Liverpool and Manchester United.

PR pWNed BN in drawing ceramah crowd

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...s-more-support/

KUCHING, April 11 — Barisan Nasional (BN) was left red-faced last night when two separate rallies across the city featuring Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his arch-nemesis Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim drew vastly different crowd numbers.

The usually conservative Sarawak folk arrived in droves at Anwar’s rally in the Batu Kawah constituency just 30 minutes outside of the city, all clambering to listen to the opposition leader and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) bigwigs like DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and PAS spiritual leader Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

According to observers at least 8,000 were in attendance, causing a major two-hour traffic congestion on the roads leading to the ceramah venue.

Held at the same time in the same city, Najib’s 1 Malaysia meet-the-leaders session paled in comparison.

Even with the bussing of people from various neighbouring constituencies into Kuching South City Hall’s indoor stadium, only a thousand were seen in it.

Each participant were given a 1 Malaysia t-shirt to wear to signal unity and flags to wave at BN government leaders as they made their way into the stadium.

Accompanying the BN chairman were the five Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) candidates, and political bigwigs like Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

After the prime minister followed the red carpet trail leading into the hall to the sounds of hoots and whistles from the white-shirt supporters, hundreds were seen streaming out, choosing to opt out of listening to his speech.

Instead, they were seen loitering around the stadium complex, chatting and feasting on the hamburgers and mineral water that were handed out.

Even as Najib’s function kicked off, large numbers were seen lounging in the buses and vans that had ferried them into the venue.

When the prime minister began his speech, large groups of people, garbed in the 1 Malaysia t-shirts, decided to stream out of the hall.

Others appeared to look bored but clapped dutifully at Najib’s punchlines or when those around them did so. The bleachers steadily emptied out as the night wore on.

While the BN chairman tried to temper the people’s growing anger against Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud by pleading with them to believe the chief minister’s succession promise, the thousands that gathered at Batu Kawah cheered as PR’s leaders told them to believe otherwise.

According to reporters at the venue, Anwar received steady attention from the crowd thoughout his speech.

In his element when addressing such large audiences, the opposition leader told Sarawakians to believe in PR and its leaders, adding that “Pek Moh”, the Hokkien term used to describe Taib, and his men in government, needed to learn from Lim, Nik Aziz and other opposition leaders.

“They have never stolen state land from the people,” he pointed out.

He drew from PR’s experiences in the Selangor and Penang state governments, pointing out that “in Selangor you get free water but in Sarawak only the rainwater is free”.

Sarawak will go to polls this April 16 in an election that is fast becoming BN’s to lose.

While PR’s leaders have long admitted that BN would successfully defend its hold over the hornbill state, many have also expressed confidence that the pact’s numbers win the state assembly would be significantly reduced.

BN presently has 63 seats in the 71-seat assembly while DAP has six and PKR and Parti Cinta Malaysia have one each.

Bro, ur God among bros

http://www.theonion.com/articles/bro-youre...ong-bros,11333/

Bro, You're A God Among Bros
BY ZACH CALDWELL
SEPTEMBER 5, 2007 | ISSUE 43•36

You know you're one of my top bros, bro, because you got my back. And I got yours. You're my bro. But you went above and beyond the other night, bromaldehyde. You really did. Saving me that seat at the Velvet Revolver show, even though all those other bros were trying to get up front, bro? So clutch.

You are truly a god among bros.

Just when I think you're as solid as a bro can get, you raise the very definition of brodom to new heights. You're like a brogle, soaring to the farthest reaches of the atbrosphere. Seriously. If it weren't for you and your extreme brobility to hook a bro up when it is most croosh, I'd have been stuck in some b****-ass seat, cramped all in the corner with a bunch of b****-asses, bro. But you stepped up. You brovercame all obstacles to help a bro out. This is the kind of shit that makes bros for life.

Brody, I was so stoked when you told Gina to go eat a fat one after she asked if she could have your other ticket, even though you knew you could probably get a pretty deese HJ from her. Bros before hos, bro. That's what I'm talking about.

You are the king of all bros. Brotankhamen. You are the Ayatollah Bromeini. You are Broseidon, lord of the brocean.

But this is just one of many times you've fallen on a grenade for me, brozo. Who took the blame when I broke Skeeter's bong and f***ing Skeeter was all f***ing pissed? You, bro. Who was the first to bro up and carry that f***ing keg of Killian's up four flights of stairs for Duke's surprise party? You, bro. Who was the only Bromo sapien on the planet to tell me he thought the brand-new rims on my F-350 were the shit even though everyone else was all, like, f***ing not that excited about them? Bro, you know it was you. You're my broheim supremo, bro, and don't you ever forget it.

I'm so f***ing glad we're bros, bro!

I've long admired your absolute broficiency in all things bro-related, and the way you've always carried yourself in a brofessional manner. I consider you a brole model. When I was new in this town, you took me under your wing and showed me the bropes. And I will always preesh that. Not only did you school me in proper brotocol, but you were a spiritual leader, a confidant, and, more importantly, a bro. You taught me how to be true to my inner bro and to bros around me. You are a real bro. Not a fake bro, like those other douches. I hate fake bros, bro. Faux breaux. f*** that. No, really, bro…you're practically a bro-ther to me.

Look at you, blasting in like Rambro and firing off your launcher like nobrody's business, bro. Serious Brotosaurus Rex action. Brodius Maximus. I'm not big on labels, but you, more than any of the wiggers, b****es, goth chicks, dorks, homos, or Mexicans I know, are absolutely beyond rebroach.

In fact, your brotitude is so brossential that, in many ways, you are the ultimate brototype: You sprung out of the brotean ooze at the very broment of creation, unformed, unmolded, and became the ultimate bro, more powerful than any who came brofore. I don't fear your power, bro, but I respect it. And I will always brobey it.

Brosemite Sam. Potassium Bromide. Brobi Wan Kenobi. Brover Norquist.

Like Broseph Stalin, you are leading the way to the dictatorship of the broletariate. It is truly revbrolutionary. Like the Bro v. Wade of our generation. You brobliterate the enemy from the very peak of Mt. Brolympus. That's some shit. That's brolific. But that's the kind of bro you are.

Bro-S.A.! Bro-S.A.! I'm so pumped right now! Bro-S.A.!

You are the epitome of bro, in every brossible way, and that's the Bro's honest truth, bro. I may have a bropensity for broverstatement, but this no mere hyperbrole: You are 100 brocent, absbrolutely the broest. Brotally.

I wish I had the words to describe what a good friend you are, dude.
Sushi Nazi serves raw deal

http://www.cnngo.com/sydney/eat/wafu-sydney-829661?hpt=C2

It’s the most exclusive restaurant in Sydney. While a meal won’t set you back much more than $30, only an elite few are privy to its organic, home-style Japanese fare.

If you’re not already a “member” of Wafu restaurant in Surry Hills, or if chef Yukako Ichikawa is not in a conciliatory mood or doesn’t like the look of you, then forget it. Say “sayonara” and take your appetite around the corner to Matsuri -- her ex-husband’s restaurant with a far more embracing door policy.

Sydney’s “sushi Nazi” established her formidable reputation a year ago. Fed up with the excessive food waste generated by picky or non-hungry diners, she began offering a 30-percent discount to those who finished their meals.

She then offered “membership” to customers who polished off everything on their plates (lemon slices, gari and wasabi excluded). Those who failed to finish their food were told not to return.

A year on, it seems Wafu’s “policies” -- displayed on the Cleveland Street restaurant’s front window and pictured below -- have become even more authoritarian.

When I visited Sydney's Wafu recently for dinner, despite there being only five customers in the 30-seat restaurant, a large sign on the door stated, “Do not come in!!! Wafu club members only!”

How to get in

Becoming a member at Wafu is no easy feat.

First-timers are advised to turn up with an existing member. Even then, service is not guaranteed.

Two females were turned away by a flustered Ichikawa because one of the women had forgotten her membership number.

First-timers are advised to turn up with an existing member. Even then, service is not guaranteed.
For those without friends in high places, getting a seat is even trickier.

The policy on Wafu’s website advises that if you come as “only two people” you might get served.
First-time patrons are also advised to arrive “hungry, as Wafu is a place to eat –- it is not a café to simply chitchat.” Also, to bring “a sturdy reusable container” to take home any leftovers.

Trying our luck

Despite not being a member, I had adhered to all the rules -- we arrived with just one other person, a raging appetite and a suitable plastic container.

So we decided to try our luck.

First, we asked one of the five diners if she could pretend she was our friend.

She refused, saying that lying could jeopardize her membership and her reputation as a good, compliant customer. She suggested, however, we ask Ichikawa about her cooking classes as a way of breaking the ice.

Heeding her advice, we waited at the counter until Ichikawa acknowledged our presence.

“I’m interested in your Sunday cooking classes,” I nervously explained.

Ichikawa’s face lit up. “Send me an email,” she replied courteously.

“And I’d really love to eat here as well,” I added hopefully. Perhaps a little too desperately.

Ichikawa’s smile dropped and her voice rose.

“At the moment I can’t take any more members. I can’t waste any more of my time explaining my policy," she said.

And with that, we left, walking dejectedly around the corner to her ex-husband’s restaurant on Crown Street.

The place was packed, thanks to the steady stream of Wafu refugees -- including those two ousted females lacking a membership number -- who were busy drowning their rejection in bowls of steaming miso soup.

West Ham wins Olympic Stadium

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/id...olympic-stadium

LONDON -- West Ham was selected over Premier League rival Tottenham on Friday to take over the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 London Games.

The Olympic Park Legacy Company picked West Ham as its preferred tenant for the $867 million stadium, which will stage the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field competition in 2012.

OPLC chairwoman Baroness Margaret Ford said the decision by the 14-member board was unanimous.

The decision, which followed months of fierce debate and rancor between the two clubs, still requires ratification by two government departments and the London mayor's office.

West Ham, in last place in the top division's standings, plans to downsize the stadium from 80,000 to 60,000 seats and use it as a multipurpose venue that includes the Olympic running track. The Hammers hope to move into the stadium from their current Upton Park home in nearby east London in August 2014.

Tottenham, bidding with American sports and entertainment giant AEG, had proposed taking down most of the stadium and putting up a 60,000-seat, soccer-only stadium on the same site without a track. Tottenham's plan had been widely criticized by Olympic officials and athletes.

Tottenham indicated earlier this week that it could mount a legal challenge to a decision in favor of West Ham's bid.

London Olympic leaders promised to keep an athletics legacy at the stadium when they made their successful bid to the International Olympic Committee in 2005.

The IOC welcomed Friday's decision, saying it "paves the way for a great sporting legacy."

West Ham vice chairman Karren Brady claimed this week that Tottenham's plan to tear down the stadium would be a "corporate crime."

Sebastian Coe, the former running great who heads the London Olympic organizing committee, said recently that Britain had a "moral responsibility" to keep the stadium track. He said Britain would "trash" its international reputation if it went back on its promise.

Coe said Friday that he was "delighted" that West Ham's bid had been selected.

The British Olympic Association hailed the selection of West Ham as a "victory for athletes, for sport and ... generations of young people."

To provide a track and field legacy, Tottenham had offered to redevelop the crumbling Crystal Palace athletics stadium in south London.

Tottenham and AEG said West Ham's attempt to combine soccer and athletics isn't economically viable in the long term and the stadium will become a white elephant -- especially as West Ham is currently in last place in the Premier League and facing demotion from the top flight.

Once the deal with West Ham is ratified, the club must enter into contract negotiations with the OPLC.

If a final agreement isn't reached by the start of April, the process could start over again.

West Ham is based closer to the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, than Tottenham, which plays at White Hart Lane, 5½ miles away in a northern suburb.

West Ham is bidding jointly with Newham Council, the local authority that will provide a loan of $64 million to the club.

West Ham also hopes to stage concerts at the stadium in conjunction with promoter Live Nation Entertainment, as well as Twenty20 cricket and American football. The stadium refurbishment is expected to cost $160 million.

Hosni Mubarak richest bugger in whole planet

http://in.news.yahoo.com/hosni-mubarak-ric...012327-409.html

Hosni Mubarak richest man in world with estimated 70 billion dollar fortune: Report
By ANI | ANI – Tue, Feb 8 2:53 PM IST

London, Feb 8(ANI): Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is likely the richest man in the world with an estimated fortune worth about 70 billion dollars.
According to the Guardian, Mubarak has money stashed in several Swiss and other foreign bank accounts, and has shadowy real-estate holdings in Manhattan, London and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
The 70 billion dollars would put the 82-year-old comfortably ahead of Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim Helu, who is worth about 53.5 billion dollars, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the richest American with 53 billion dollars.
According to Princeton Political Science professor Amaney Jamal, Mubarak's three-decade rule in Egypt had kept him in a perfect spot to get a piece of any government action.
"There was a lot of corruption in this regime and stifling of public resources for personal gain. This is the pattern of other Middle Eastern dictators," Jamal told ABC News.
"This is the pattern of other Middle Eastern dictators so their wealth will not be taken during a transition," he added.
Mubarak was appointed Vice President in 1975, and assumed the Presidency on October 14, 1981, following the assassination of President Anwar El Sadat.
He is the longest-serving Egyptian ruler since Muhammad Ali Pasha.
U Malaysian ah? Sing me Negaraku dupe

http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=3...63&id=624249071

Whimsical Wednesday — Parrot Patriots

by Ahmad Azrai

IT is no secret amongst my friends and my family that I am passionate about a lot of things. Whether it is music, food, philosophy or the latest episodes of Futurama, I can go on and on (stopping seems to be the problem, my friends and family say) about anything.

One consequence of that passion is, of course, a hot temper; it is a direct result of being impatient, quick and eager that can so often lead to trouble and fights if not restrained (I am and always have been an Aries even as a child, despite what recent revelations about the zodiac may seem to say). And as I grow older and flabbier, my temperament is not as touchy as it used to be, and I do not get upset nearly as often as I did — although it may be more of the case being I get upset over more important things less frequently but for far longer.

That doesn't mean that I cannot explode in anger if the moment merits it. This article is a result of one such anger, which has burned so hot that it has come out the other side as cold that burns.

Let me explain. It involves one of my friends who got into a little incident with the cops. In the interest of his safety, I will anonymously refer to him as the Hero, because he is a Super friend, even though he never wears his underwear over his pants. The hero is from Sabah, and is half Australian, so he looks like how locals think a "typical" Westerner should look like. However, he is fluent in both English and Malay — which, although it is Sabahan Malay and very slightly different from that spoken in Peninsular Malaysia, is still comprehensible.

The Hero was driving in KL and running some errands one night, wanting to get them done before heading back to Sabah the following morning. He met a friend of his at Jalan Nagasari, and was forced to park near a yellow line momentarily to meet with his friend. As he was about to leave, three policemen on motorcycles came and stopped him.

Granted, stopping on a yellow line was a no-no — but anyone who lives in KL can tell you that Jalan Nagasari is not well designed, nor are there any adequate spots to stop at. However, the killer bit came next. [The following transcript is based on the Hero's description]:

Cop #1: "Where you from?"

Hero: "Local. I'm Malaysian."

Cop: "Huh? Local?? Tengok IC (Let me see your IC [identity card])."

Cop: "[looking at MyKad] Ini palsu ke? (Is this fake?)"

Hero: "Tak. (No)"

Cop: "Betul ke? Muka anda bukan macam orang Malaysia. Boleh nyanyi Negaraku ke? Nyanyi Negaraku. (Really? Your face is not a Malaysian face. Can you sing the Negaraku? Sing the Negaraku.)"

Me: "Jangan begitu la, bang. (Don't be like that, bro.)"

Cop: "Kalau orang Malaysia, nyanyi. (If you are Malaysian, sing.)"

This led eventually to this statement:

Cop 1: "[to Hero's Friend)... adalah hak saya untuk minta IC orang... (It is my right to ask for people's ICs.) [The rest of what the cop said is rendered in English] if I suspect that a person's IC is fake, it is my right to bring and report that person to Pendaftaran. And this person does not look like a Malaysian to me. So I asked him to sing Negaraku. Not to embarrass him, but to see if he really did go to school in this country. When we grow up we don't remember the whole song, but as a child in school we are made to sing it every day, or every week, so we would know how it starts. So (to me), are you going to sing it or not?

The Hero thought about this and came to the conclusion that as far as the cop was concerned, there is no such thing as a Malaysian child who grew up overseas or went to an international school, especially if they look at least half white. Wisely, he did say this aloud, and proceeded to sing the first two lines. The cop stopped him, and let him go, but not before subjecting the Hero to some small talk.

The Hero said to me:

"They weren't overly polite, but they weren't rude either. I didn't give them a reason to use physical force, and I'm glad that they didn't, otherwise this could have been a whole different story. I decided I should play ball. I had done nothing wrong and aggravating them wouldn't have helped. Yes, some may say that's misplaced trust in the system, but either way I concluded that resisting wouldn't have worked out the way I wanted it to. The last thing I needed was to be dragged to the station considering I had an early flight out the next morning. (Not that I need for that to happen under any circumstance.)

"I wonder if I should have volunteered Sabah Tanahairku. They weren't Sabahan, that's for sure. Sabahan cops would have known that Sabah has plenty of Eurasians, and I don't mean what appears to be the narrow Peninsular view of having Portuguese ancestry 500 years back; I mean having a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who is European of any sort. There are lots of us here. We're all different, but we're all Malaysian. And another Sabahan would know."

To say I am upset is a waste of a fine opportunity to say that I am flabbergasted instead. I'll put very bluntly: what sort of nonsense is this? Not only do you insult my friend (giving him anxiety along the way) by suggesting that his face is not Malaysian enough, you claim that there is method to your madness? How on Earth does singing the Negaraku prove that you are local? Or a patriot? Our politicians don't even bother to lip-synch during the Merdeka celebrations (it's there for all to see on TV) — does that mean that they, our lawmakers, are the real patriots?

Let me put the point in another way: my younger and only brother Nazli and I grew up listening to the Singapore national anthem because during the school holidays, we would travel south to Johor Bahru to stay with our maternal grandparents, which meant being exposed to Singapore TV when the broadcasting company was still called the SBC. As such, we can accurately sing Majulah, Singapura — does that make us Singaporean? Of course not.

Hell, come to think of it, not only can I sing Deutschland Über Alles, I can both sing AND play on the piano La Marseillaise — as I did for Monsieur Jacques et Madame Renée Talibart when they lived as my family's next door neighbours for a brief but wonderful time in 1989. Does that make me l'enfant de la Patrie? I wish it did — if what happened to my friend is going to be the standard of life under the current regime, I would rather be au le Champ de Mars en Paris avec La dame de fer. At least croissants et pâtisseries would be cheap, non?

We are such a blatant nation of double standards that it is not funny anymore — where declaring yourself as gay gets you into trouble with the authorities, whereas those who threatened you with death not only get away scot free, but are are actively encouraged. Where politicians tell us that there is no more money to send local students overseas to study, but in the same breath say there is a need to spend an extra RM700 million on a newer building for Parliament and another RM800 million on a new National Palace (and that is just the structure without the fixings). Where the Prime Minister gleeful declares that the government is fair because there is religious freedom, when in fact not only are non-Muslims harrassed in various ways but those who want to leave Islam (for whatever reason) are given one heck of a merry-go-round — and still not allowed to become apostate after all that.

Where the Deputy Prime Minister goes on a trip to the US for six days on a goodwill tour, but stops at the Berklee College of Music along the way — not because he is a musician nor because of fostering more music education policies for the country nor even because it is a vital stop on the goodwill trip, but because his daughter happens to be studying there. Which means that the Malaysian public paid for him and his wife to visit their daughter. It's not like he doesn't have the money; he has been a ridiculously successful (and ruthless) businessman for much longer than he has been a politician. Does that mean that normal people can thus write off visits to their children who are studying overseas against their income tax?

Get real.

I was so upset that I was tempted to create my graphic illustration with the Malaysian flag upside down — which is a signal to show distress. Don't look at me like that, it is an internationally recognised signal, as displayed on Wikipedia's entry on flag terminology and with a corresponding US legal explanation here. However, this being Malaysia, it would most likely have gotten me into trouble and blown the whole point and message of this article out of proportion, so I did not.

But since I brought the matter to your attention, you can guess why I brought the matter to your attention in the first place.

You want to talk about patriots, look no further than my late granduncle Tan Sri Zainal Abidin Sulong. He not only served as our ambassador to several countries and to the United Nations, he was also involved with several of the leading local think-tanks at one point in time. But when he passed on, he only got two paragraphs in Utusan Malaysia — and even then, the second paragraph was merely a confirmation from his wife, my grandaunt Puan Sri Siti Maznah Abdul Rauf, that he passed away at home. None of the other local newspapers wrote about it — but The Star, which is directly owned by the Malaysian Chinese Association (the Chinese-based party of the incumbent government's National Coalition), wrote a piece on the death of the mother of an MCA deputy president.

This is how true patriots in Malaysia are valued: less than someone who gave birth to someone who has not made any splash (positive or otherwise) to local lives.

I hope to turn 36 in April; my birthday wish, in light of these shenanigans, is for all Malaysians to grow up, grow a pair, stop using racism as an excuse and stop being such blockheads. Patriotism is more than just singing songs and shouting slogans — same thing with the religions that you belong to. What is the point of reciting prayers when your mind is not sincere about it? If you are of the opinion that you can fool your deity, then you, sir, are by no means worth of said deity's tender mercies.

My favourite patriotic song, Tanah Pusaka, has a line that goes: "Oh, tanah pusaka/Biar putih tulang, jangan putih mata." It is the last line and means: "Oh, sacred land of my origin, tis better to die sincerely than to live in blindness." The literal translation of the last bit goes: "Let the bones be white [ie, exposed in death], do not let the eye be white." I say that that line is an apt piece of advice to all those so called patriots of the country; be the best that you can be and be smart about it. Otherwise, you are a parrot rather than a patriot. And the only thing you get then are crackers...
