DBKL mulling over proposal to enforce display of

KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is considering making it compulsory for premises owners to display the Jalur Gemilang.

“We are studying the possibility of including it among the conditions to obtain a licence for their premises,” Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said at the launch of the Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2017 campaign at Menara DBKL 1.

He said many owners do not fly the flag proudly unlike in other countries like the US and Indonesia.

“I don’t understand why Malaysians do not do that when it is a symbol of our independence,” he said.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping swore in Hong Kong's new leader on Saturday warning that Beijing will not tolerate any challenge to its authority in a strongly worded speech to mark the 20th anniversary of the former British colony's return to China.

Security was tight at the same harbour-front venue where two decades earlier, the last colonial governor, Chris Patten, tearfully handed back Hong Kong to Beijing at a rain-soaked ceremony.

"Any attempt to endanger China's sovereignty and security, challenge the power of the central government and the authority of the Basic Law of the HKSAR or use Hong Kong to carry out infiltration and sabotage activities against the mainland is an act that crosses the red line and is absolutely impermissible," Xi said.

Although Singapore has no official extradition agreement with Thailand, Interpol officials said police informally can arrange through other means to apprehend him there.

Thai police said Wednesday they were trying to locate Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhya who reportedly fled to Singapore on his private jet days before a warrant was issued for him over a fatal hit-and-run in 2012.

After years of dodging prosecutors, 32-year-old billionaire Vorayuth has become a poster child for the impunity enjoyed by elites in starkly unequal Thailand.

Authorities finally issued an arrest warrant for the scion last week after he failed to make a final deadline to meet prosecutors - five years after he sped off after mowing down and killing a policeman with his Ferrari in downtown Bangkok.

But Vorayuth, known by his nickname “Boss”, slipped out of the country just days before the warrant was issued, according to police.

President Donald Trump has signaled his preference for a weaker dollar and low interest rates. He may end up with neither if the U.S. economy continues to recover and he delivers on his ambitious agenda of tax cuts and infrastructure spending.

Trump indicated in an interview Wednesday that the U.S. currency is getting so strong that it’s harmful to the economy. "I think our dollar is getting too strong, and partially that’s my fault because people have confidence in me," he told the Wall Street Journal. "But that’s hurting -- that will hurt ultimately."

The president also left open the possibility of renominating Janet Yellen as Federal Reserve chair for another term, adding he likes "a low interest-rate policy." U.S. 10-year bond yields slumped and the dollar fell after his remarks were published. Her current term as chair expires in February.

Trump might want to be careful with all that he wishes for. Evidence of a strengthening job market has prompted the Fed to raise rates twice since he was elected president in November.

U.S. stocks have since rallied almost 10 percent and the dollar has held up on optimism that he’ll carry out a plan to cut taxes and boost spending on infrastructure. The bullish sentiment has recently faded on doubts about whether the administration can follow through.

MANILA: Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte has cancelled a planned visit to an island the Philippines claims in the disputed South China Sea, after Beijing warned him against the visit.

The brash Philippine leader last week announced his plan to raise the Philippine flag in the island of Thitu and fortify it with barracks, setting off alarm bells.

“Because of our friendship with China and because we value your friendship I will not go there to raise the Philippine flag,” Duterte said in a speech before the Filipino community in Riyadh late on Wednesday.

“They said, do not go there in the meantime, just do not go there please. I will correct myself because we value our friendship with China,” he said, adding that he might just send his son to the island.

OTTAWA, Feb 24 — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump discussed border cooperation in a phone call yesterday as pressure mounted in Canada over rising numbers of asylum seekers arriving from the United States.

The phone call, which followed a positive meeting between the two leaders in Washington last week, also covered the softwood lumber trade dispute, among other issues, Trudeau’s office said in a statement.

The number of asylum seekers crossing into Canada at isolated and unguarded border crossings has increased in recent weeks amid fears that Trump will crack down on illegal immigrants, and photos of smiling Canadian police greeting the migrants have gone viral.

The White House said Trump emphasized the importance of working closely with Canada on cross-border issues, “including implementation of his administration’s actions to protect America from terrorist attacks by foreign nationals and others.”

Officials say Trump will soon issue a new executive order to replace the administration’s directive suspending travel to the United States by citizens of seven mostly Muslim countries.

While Trudeau has won positive headlines for his welcome to refugees and has so far avoided political fallout with Trump, opponents and allies alike are pushing the Liberal government for a solution to illegal border crossings.

Brian Pallister, the Conservative premier of the province of Manitoba, called on the federal government for more resources to deal with the influx of asylum seekers, some of whom have lost fingers to frostbite in the dangerous crossing.

Asylum seekers cross illegally because Canada’s policy under the Canada-US Safe Third Country Agreement is to turn back refugees if they make claims at border crossings.

While Pallister said his province will welcome those in need with “open arms and open hearts,” his call for a national strategy to deal with the arrivals adds to opposition criticism that Trudeau has put national security at risk by embracing asylum seekers.

As of February 13, some 3,800 people had made an asylum claim in 2017, up from the same period last year and on track to approach the 2008 peak of 36,867, said Scott Bardsley, spokesman for Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale. Warmer weather could spur more arrivals.

Polls show Canadians are split over whether Canada should be accepting more or fewer refugees.

But even Liberal legislators are starting to hear from constituents concerned about a sudden influx of the mostly African, Middle Eastern and Asian asylum seekers. — Reuters

It has been years since migrant worker groups in Singapore first raised concerns over employers getting their foreign workers to queue up — sometimes overnight — to buy bak kwa (barbecued pork) on their behalf, but with Chinese New Year just around the corner, the practice has emerged once again.

Hours before a popular bak kwa retailer opens its New Bridge Road outlet in Central Singapore for business, groups of migrant workers can be seen forming a line, some of them lying on makeshift beds of cardboard, others seated on stools found nearby.

Paid for the hours they spend in line, the workers told TODAY they were happy for the chance to make an extra buck. But migrant-worker rights groups say the practice exploits cheap labour and demeans the workers.

Indonesia sacks JPMorgan following downgrade

JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government has terminated its contracts with investment bank JPMorgan Chase following its downgrade of the country in a November report. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati calls the report "misleading."

JPMorgan named Indonesia one of the "losers from Trumponomics" in its Nov. 13 report, citing the spike in the volatility of the bond market following Donald Trump's win in the U.S. presidential election. The U.S. investment bank downgraded Indonesia from "overweight" to "underweight."

The Indonesian government in early December decided to terminate its contracts with JPMorgan in response to the report. On Tuesday, Indrawati explained the reason behind the government's decision.
