just finished recabling my dying altec lansing im716 this afternoon..

opening the IEM shell is a little bit challenging, have to struggle with paper clip and bare hands

i played with a couple resistors today, and this is my temporary choice. different impedance really gives you different sound signature!!

i spent more than 5 hours straight in making this IEM. it's not that the soldering is difficult, but i want precise length between the y split, the left and right shells. it's more difficult than i thought!!

i used multicomp and kiwame resistors there, because i only want to experiment with the impedance only (total impedance in my im716 now is 44 ohm). now that i know what impedance i want, time to go for tantalum

critics and advises are mostly welcomed..

i have a question, is using 100ohm x 100ohm(paralleled) resistor would be different sounding than 120ohm x 120ohm? total impedance are about the same..

impression:

before recable (already depodded w/ total 18ohm impedance):
surprisingly good, and balanced. i thought this will lacks the bass quantity, but not at all..bass depth is pretty good and accurate. however, it lacks the accuracy and micro details of the music..

after recable (total 44ohm impedance):
instrument becomes much more real, and accurate. bass impact is good, bass depth is also good. the bass goes as deep as phonak, but with a little bit more quantity and impact. but not compromising the midrange AT ALL..

compared to phonak, the midrange is a little bit laid back. in my opinion, phonak is a little bit boost its midrange while keeping it pleasant sounding. recabled im716 sounds more balanced.

however, the hi-hat texture in drum set sounds a little bit more real in phonak at the moment..maybe this is because i'm still using cheap resistor

update:

after few hours play time, the treble becomes more extended and real, but still slightly rolled off..previously, it was more rolled off and sounded a little bit 'plasticky'. i almost forgot this thing needs burn-in period

anybody here wants to buy RSA Protector 'unique' balanced connector for DIY? i want to buy myself a piece but the shipping is rather expensive (almost USD20, even for one piece order!!)

so if anybody wants to order this thing as well, we can join up. or if somebody is already doing the bulk, I'M IN!!

for RSA protector owners who want to have the balanced connector but don't have the ability to DIY, you can ask my workmanship. just MP me..i just want this connector so bad, i'll do almost anything to get anyone on board!! loollzzz..
