Avira's 2010 Awardssss

In December well known test lab AV-Comparatives measured the speed of 16 anti-virus solutions under Windows XP. The result: Avira AntiVir Premium beat all the other anti-virus programs with ease! AV-Comparatives rewarded the achievement with their “Advanced+” award.

Whether packing or unpacking archives, converting video files, installing applications or starting programs like Word or PDF readers, Avira provides protection without any noticeable loss of speed. And the best thing of all: when it comes to combating malware, these anti-virus solutions made in Germany are not just fast, but also thorough. This demonstrates that effective protection does not have to slow processes down.

The year couldn’t have started any better! In the February test run by the AV-Comapartives.org laboratory, we achieved the best detection rate among all single-engine products. Our Avira AntiVir Premium wiped out 99.3% of the 1.2 million malware samples. Moreover, the malware scanner had almost the highest scanning speed. The prize: the top award, the "Advanced+", plus millions of satisfied users.

Success in a row for Avira AntiVir Personal and Avira AntiVir Professional: both products obtained the VB100 award for April 2010 on Windows XP with Service Pack 3, thanks to the excellent detection rate in the ITW test. There were no false positives, of course. Moreover, Avira triumphed in the Heuristics test, identifying more than 85% of the yet unknown malware – an extraordinary performance!

Avira takes the VB100 award once again in February 2010! Our anti-virus solution was required to face up to a whole battery of harmful malware under Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11. The result: no problems. Our software detected all viruses - with no false positives. Even in the toughest test, in which the latest malware was let loose on a version of Avira AntiVir 3.0.5 for Linux Server that had not been updated, the detection rate was an impressive 85.3%. This was the best proactive result among all nine test candidates!

Clean that disk: the virus detection algorithms used by Avira AntiVir Personal and Avira AntiVir Professional fulfilled their function admirably and, justly earning them the VB100 Award in December 2009. All wild list viruses were detected under Windows 7 Professional and, when it came to Trojans, our sharp-eyed virus scanner proved itself to be the best single scanner out of a field of 43 candidates.

http://www.avira.com/en/company/awards.html

False Positive, False Alarm, FP

False Positive, or so called false alarm.

Many among us keep on saying false positive is bad bad bad, a big no no, blah blah blah.
Stop preaching about FP if you dont know who they are.. but to tell us exactly your experience about FPs.

What do you encounter actually? What software? What file? I think some of us might be interested in knowing this.

Don't mention False Positive King like Kingsoft, or Emsisoft.

Lets talk about average joe like Kaspersky, Eset, Avira, is their FP consider high? or low?

Please shed us some lights here.

some random test done by some guy,
Avira beats the hell out of Kaspersky!

Avira vs Kaspersky

Same sample, it took 7 mins++ for Kaspersky to scan and only detected 5586 viruses.
and same sample, it only took 10 seconds for Avira to scan them all and yet Avira detected 5818 viruses with heuristic switched off, far more better than Kaspersky? Maybe they should get help from jackie chan now. Muahahaha...

Avira AntiVir Personal BETA TEST

To all the Avirans&Fans, register now, Avira free AV now comes with HIPS. nice~

To all the beloved-basher, please post some constructive comments.

Registration to the Beta Test Program
http://betatest.avira.com/profile/register.php

Avira AntiVir ProActive

Avira AntiVir Personal – Free Antivirus with proactive detection, through the newly integrated module Avira AntiVir ProActive
What is Avira AntiVir ProActive?

Avira AntiVir ProActive is a new Avira technology for detecting malware based on its behavior. AntiVir ProActive is monitoring on-access those areas of your system, which are usually attacked by malware. All activities in the target areas are registered by sensors and reported to the rules base, to determine if the activities were indeed caused by malware. If there are activities of virulent origin, Avira AntiVir ProActive blocks them.

Avira AntiVir ProActive completes the existing signature-based, generic and heuristic detection processes, with an advanced method meant to effectively protect you against infection with unknown malware.

Please note, that due to its behavior-based approach, Avira AntiVir ProActive cannot guarantee 100% malware detection. It may happen that some malware is not detected or that some clean files are erroneously reported as malware.
............
http://betatest.avira.com/products/products.php

So called Best AntiVirus KASPERSKY got HACKED!

Hmm, I think this is quite embarrassing ! The news is everywhere!

1. Kaspersky hacked?
http://www.daniweb.com/blogs/entry3943.html
Feb 8th, 2009, 7:50 am
It all kicked off last night with a posting to hacker board claiming to have carried out a relatively simple SQL Injection attack on one the world's biggest and best known IT security companies: Kaspersky.

The hacker, currently only know as 'uno' claims that the SQL Injection attack on usa.kaspersky.com has exposed activation codes, user details, bug lists and so on. "Kaspersky is one of the leading companies in the security and antivirus market. It seems as though they are not able to secure their own data bases. Seems incredible but unfortunately, its true. Alter one of the parameters and you have access to EVERYTHING: users, activation codes, lists of bugs, admins, shop, etc" uno says.

If this proves to be true, and Kaspersky has yet to confirm or deny the claims, it will prove to be hugely embarrassing as it exploits one of the simplest of hacking methodologies - the old change a bit of the URL trick. Here at DaniWeb we exposed how an online visa application system fell victim to the same tactic, potentially exposing the personal details, including passport numbers and travel plans, of hundreds of thousands of Indian citizens. Our revelation ultimately led to the UK Foreign Office being found guilty of breaching the Data Protection Act.

So has Kaspersky been hacked? Well Kaspersky is obviously investigating and will no doubt issue a statement sooner rather than later. I would expect for first thing Monday morning at the very latest if it wants to keep a lid on this thing. However, the screen shots that have been posted at the hacker blog certainly seem convincing enough and do tend to suggest that it could be for real.

The Register reports that this is not the first time Kaspersky has been on the wrong end of a SQL injection attack. El Reg says Kaspersky's Malaysian site and some subdomains were defaced by a pro-Turkish hacker in July, and there have been a total of some 36 Kaspersky website defacements since the year 2000.
.....

2. Kaspersky breach exposes sensitive database, hacker claims SQL injection said to strike deep
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/02/08/ka...promise_report/

....It claimed that a simple modification of a URL exposed the site's entire database. "Alter one of the parameters and you have access to EVERYTHING: users, activation codes, lists of bugs, admins, shot, etc." The screenshots showed the attack was focused on Kaspersky's technical support and knowledge base for the Americas. It included the names of more than 150 tables.

The URLs were edited to redact the page's vulnerable handler, but tools that are easy to come by could help anyone who knows how to use them to identify where the SQL injection weakness is located, Ptecek said.

Assuming the hack is for real, it wouldn't be the first time a Kaspersky site has been hit by a SQL injection attack. In July, Kaspersky's Malaysian site and several subdomains were defaced by hacker who left pro-Turkish slogans. According to ZDNet's Zero Day blog here, Zone-h archives show 36 website defacements of international Kaspersky sites since 2000.

This breach appears to be more serious because it potentially exposes customer information and could also open Kaspersky's site to other types of abuse, security experts said.

"I hope that Kaspersky administrators fix this vulnerability rather quickly as they no doubt have a large customer base, and it would appear that all those customers are now exposed," Gunter Ollmann, the chief security strategist at IBM's Internet Security Systems blogs here.

"On top of that, this type of critical flaw can probably be used to usurp legitimate purchases and renewals of their products - which could include the linking to malicious and backdoored versions of their software - thereby infecting those very same customers that were seeking protection from malware in the first place."
