Reducing Sum Insured for Insurance Policy?

A few years ago i'd bought some insurance policy which required me to pay a hefty some of premium every year.
It used to be affordable to me but now due to some financial issue i no longer can service such high premium every year.

Is it possible to reduce the total sum insured of my current insurance policy and to reduce yearly premium paid. I dont want surrender the policy as I will lost alot money
