Lighting :LED vs Energy Saving / Normal bulbs

Hello,

I am currently looking at furnishing my place and it seems that LED lighting is the latest trend as has ultra low power consumption at about 4W for a bulb.

Was also told there there is less heat generated.

My question is, can i change my house bulbs to LED bulbs (screw in type of various sizes available) into normal bulb sockets?
Do i need some kind of adapter to make it fit or do i need special lamps that can only use LED bulbs?

Also I realise LED bulbs are more expensive but I was told can last for maybe 8-10 years, soemthing which i dont mind.

Any opinions?
