Selecting a Color Grade

Color is an important factor to consider when choosing a diamond, as it is noticeable to the unaided eye. Below are some points to keep in mind when selecting a color grade:

Those who prefer a colorless diamond should select a stone in the D-F range with a fluorescence rating of "None" or "Faint".

Near colorless diamonds with a rating between G and J are excellent values, as their color is typically undetectable to the unaided eye. If you are considering a diamond in this color range, a Brilliance diamond and jewellery expert can review the stone to ensure the color cannot be seen with the naked eye.

A near colorless diamond can appear whiter when set in white gold metals. Yellow gold settings complement diamonds with lower color ratings.

A common misconception is that only colorless diamonds exude brilliance. In reality, a well-cut diamond can emit fire and beauty even with traces of faint yellow, although the presence of color will decrease the stone's value.

TIP: Compared to other shapes, brilliant round cut diamonds of all color grades appear brighter due to their greater light dispersion.

Fluorescence

Fluorescence, the effect ultraviolet (UV) light has on a diamond, is an important consideration when selecting a diamond. When UV light strikes a diamond with fluorescent properties, the stone emits a glow that is usually blue, but can also reflect shades of green, yellow, white, pink, orange, and red.

The presence of fluorescence can enhance the visual appeal of a diamond with a lower-color rating in the J through M range. The fluorescence helps to cancel out any faint yellow in the stone, resulting in a colorless appearance.
Fluorescence can occur in different intensities. Gemological laboratories rate the fluorescence of each diamond on a scale from "None" to "Very Strong".

The Fluorescence Effect

Fluorescence can enhance or detract from the beauty of a diamond. The bluish tint can improve a lower-color diamond (J-M color rated) by cancelling out the faint yellow, resulting in a colorless appearance. However, in a very high-color diamond (D-F color rated), fluorescence may have the opposite effect.

How does Fluorescence affect the Diamond Pricing?

Historically, strongly fluorescent diamonds have been marked down in price next to their non-fluorescent counterparts. Typically, higher color (D-H) non-fluorescent diamonds will sell for 10-30% more than similar stones that exhibited very strong blue fluorescence. However, lower color (I-N) diamonds with very strong fluorescence were priced 5% higher than similar non fluorescence stones. This could be due to the perception that blue fluorescence can mask the undesirable yellow tones found in some stones.

Clarity

Inclusions found on a diamond can be considered nature's birthmarks, the distinguishing characteristics that make the stone unique. When grading a diamond, the amount of inclusions and blemishes has a direct impact on its clarity and value. Flawless diamonds containing no inclusions are extremely rare and very expensive.

Contains very obvious inclusions that can usually be seen with the naked eye, as well as under 10 x magnifications. Included diamonds sometimes display poor transparency and lack of brilliance.

Cut
Whatever shape a rough diamond has been polished into, the cut determines the diamond’s brilliance, light dispersion and scintillation. For this reason, the cut plays an important role in determining the price of the stone; therefore it is better to acquaint yourself with all the factors affecting the cut of stone before making purchase.

The Diamond Structure

A diamond is made up of two key sections, the Crown and the Pavilion. Their structure and relationship to each other in the form of table and depth percentage have the biggest impact on the diamond’s sparkle.
The round brilliant cut has been used as an example, because with most other diamond shapes (fancy cut diamonds) the cut grading is more complicated (hence the cut grading does not appear on certificates such as GIA.)

Diameter: Width of the diamond at the widest point of the girdle (in fancy cut diamonds, the smallest diameter is used).
Table: The largest facet at the top
Crown: The top part of the diamond between the girdle and the table
Girdle: The narrow band at the diamond’s widest point
Pavilion: The bottom part of the diamond between the girdle and the culet
Culet: The fact at the bottom tip (preferable when not visible to the naked eye)
Depth: The height of a diamond from the table to the culet

Cut Grading

The cut is mainly influenced by the harmony between the table and depth percentages and crown and pavilion angels, either causing the diamond to dissipate light (poor cut) or optimally refract and reflect light (excellent cut). The table and depth percentages are calculated as follows:

Depth Percentage: The higher the number, the deeper the stone. The lower the number, the shallower the stone.

Table Percentage
Table Percentage: The higher the number, the bigger the table looks. The lower the number, the smaller the table looks.
Table and depth percentages affect how light travels within the diamond and impacts a stone’s brilliance. If a cut is too shallow, light escapes out from the sides and the diamond loses brilliance. If the cut is too deep, light is lost from the bottom and the diamond will appears dull or dark.
