Attorney show rape pics but didnt prosecute

A county attorney in Kansas violated a girl's privacy by showing around photos of her sexual assault, the teen and her mother claim in Topeka Federal Court. The Anderson County Attorney refused to prosecute the assailant, but showed other parents photos of the sexual assault, and was suspended from practicing law for 6 months for it, the family says.

The parents say their 17-year-old daughter attended an outdoor party in May 2007, where four men or boys forced her to take off her clothes. One of them had sex with her in the bed of a truck, despite her repeated pleas for him to stop, while others took photos of it, according to the complaint.

The girl says that she reported the assault to police, who referred it to County Attorney Frank Campbell.

She says Campbell "decided he would not pursue prosecution of the male" involved in the sexual assault, but told a local newspaper that he would share the pictures with parents of the minors at the party.

The girl's family protested, but says Campbell insisted he did not need permission to show around the photos, and photos of the girl allegedly drinking alcohol at the party.

Campbell did show the photos to parents, the girl says, and wrote a letter to her mother stating that "the photographs you refer to are evidence of criminal activity by several minors and as I cannot lawfully withhold evidence, I have allowed and will continue to allow the parents of the potential respondents to view altered versions of them in my office."

The family says they filed an ethics complaint against Campbell, and the state Supreme Court suspended him from practicing law for 6 months.

The girl says she has been "diagnosed with depression and has suffered from flashbacks, nightmares and severe mental anguish."

The family sued Campbell and the County Commission, which allegedly failed to stop Campbell from revealing the photos. They demand punitive damages.

The family is represented by Gregory Lee.

Source: http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/07/15/D...Family_Says.htm

"Shiny phones, handsome boys", out Taliban warns

GHAZNI, Afghanistan (Reuters) - The Taliban have warned Afghans that possessing pictures of "unrelated women and handsome boys" was against Islamic law and owning "shiny new phones" runs contrary to their religious dignity.

The Taliban have been posting "night letters" in the volatile southeastern province of Ghazni, reminding Afghans of their religious obligations and reiterating warnings that they will attempt to disrupt crucial presidential elections on Aug. 20.

In a restatement of the Taliban's austere interpretation of Islam, one letter warned people, especially the young, against using hi-tech gadgets such as cell phones with photography and video functions.

"People with camera cellphones must not have pictures of unrelated women and handsome boys in their phones, which is against Islamic sharia," reads one letter, obtained by Reuters on Monday. Sharia is Islamic religious law.

"People should think of their Afghan dignity rather than buying shiny phones," it said.

Mobile telephones also should not have "immoral video clips", ring tones with verses of the Koran, or derogatory messages against individuals or tribes. It regarded such offences as "a serious crime" that would be punished severely, the letter said.

The "night letters" have been springing up overnight in mosques and on the walls of Ghazni villages since last Friday.

The Taliban also warned voters in Ghazni to stay home from the day before the Aug. 20 election or face serious consequences.

With attacks escalating across Afghanistan in recent weeks, the Taliban's leaders last week vowed to disrupt the poll, urging voters to boycott the ballot and "join the trenches of jihad".

The letters in Ghazni have even been distributed by hand in one district, telling voters polling stations will be targeted.

"In order that this illegitimate process faces failure, the fighters will intensively attack polling centres, and (we) warn voters to stay home one day before," read another letter.

The use of "night letters" and similar threats are a common tactic in the south and east, long Taliban strongholds.

Source: http://in.reuters.com/article/southAsiaNew...-41506220090803

Jobless graduate sues her college

A New York woman who says she cannot find a job is suing the college where she obtained a bachelor's degree, the New York Post reports.

Trina Thompson, 27, filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court.

She is seeking to recover $70,000 (£42,000) she spent on tuition to get her information technology degree.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank said Ms Thompson's lawsuit was "completely without merit".

The ex-student, who received her degree in April, says the college's Office of Career Advancement did not provide her with the leads and career advice it had promised.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," she wrote about the college in her lawsuit.

Her mother, Carol, said her daughter was "very angry at her situation" having "put all her faith" in her college.

With her student loans coming due, the family would be saddled with more debt, the graduate's mother added.

Monroe insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

"The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration," its spokesman said.

Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8180806.stm

Study: Sex without condoms makes people happier

QUOTE

Sex without a condom is good for your mental health. So says controversial research conducted by a leading Scottish psychologist. Professor Stuart Brody claims that unprotected penile-vaginal intercourse (PVI) can significantly boost men and women's mental wellbeing. Brody also cites studies indicating that that using a condom can lead to depression.

Mr Brody, of the University of the West of Scotland (Paisley), argues that mankind is biologically programmed to enjoy unprotected PVI sex because it gives couples an evolutionary advantage and maximises the chances of reproducing. His theory, to be published in the academic journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour, has caused a predictable angry reaction from safer sex groups.

Tony Kerridge of Marie Stopes International, a leading sexual health and reproductive health organisation, said: "I would have thought that the mental health of anyone would be tested if they found out they had a sexually transmitted disease or that there was an unwanted pregnancy."

"Particularly in the case of casual relationships where there is no desire to get pregnant, advice should always be that condoms should be used."

"It really is a no-brainer as far as we are concerned. We are seeing some of the most rapidly increasing rates of HIV among heterosexual couples in Europe."

However Professor Brody said: "Evolution is not politically correct, so of the very broad range of potential sexual behaviour, there is actually only one that is consistently associated with better physical and mental health and that is the one sexual behaviour that would be favoured by evolution. That is not accidental."

The controversial conclusions are based on a study of 111 men and 99 women in Portugal who completed questionnaires about frequency of sexual activity, their rate of orgasms and their condom use. Using a test of psychological health Mr Brody concluded that condom use was associated with members of the sample who exhibited immature psychological defense mechanisms.

Those that had unprotected PVI sex appeared to be able to deal with stress in a more mature way by taking effective action. They also had better mental health. "The more often people are using condoms independent of age, independent of the nature of their relationship, the greater use of immature defence mechanisms against stress. "In contrast, the more often they have [PVI] sex without condoms, the better their mental health and the more mature their mechanisms."

The findings of the underlying study are specific to condoms, not to other forms of contraception, and were not confounded by relationship status, age, cohabitation, or social desirability responding.

Source: http://carnalnation.com/content/15119/3/st...-people-happier
