Saudi Arabia offers full scholarships for 100 Malaysian male students for 2017 intake

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia today announced that 100 Malaysian students will be given full scholarships to further their studies at the Mohamed Bin Saud University in Riyadh for the 2017 intake.

The level of studies offered for this scholarship are the Diploma, Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees, and for all programmes except for Medicine.

The application is open to all male Malaysians. However, Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia Cultural Attache Zayed O. Al-Harethi said it will be open to female applicants in the future.

Requirements for applicants are; aged between 17 and 24 for Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree, 24 to 30 for Master’s Degree, and 30 to 35 for PhD.

Applicants must submit a copy of the last degree obtained, their medical report, passport copy and record of good conduct. These certificates and documents must be certified by the Saudi Embassy.

"This is the first full scholarship offered to a big number of students and for all disciplines of study, except for Medicine.

"There is a large number of Saudi students in Malaysia and we would like to have the same exchange in our country," Zayed told a press conference today.

Benefits for selected students include SAR1,700 (RM1,842) and SAR1,800 (RM1,950) for Bachelor of Arts and Graduate nominees respectively. They will also receive monthly allowances, free housing and full board, medical insurance and possibility of obtaining visa.

Those interested must submit their applications to the Saudi Embassy here by August 7. Interviews will be conducted on August 8.

Public holiday for Sarawak on July 22

KUCHING: Sarawak will have an additional public holiday as July 22 has been declared a state-wide holiday, commencing this year.

A statement from the Chief Minister's Department (State Administrative Unit) said July 22 is now a public holiday, as cited in the Sarawak Government Gazette and will be known as the Sarawak Independence Day.

In April, Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem brought cheer to more than two million people in the state when he declared the date as a public holiday to commemorate Sarawak's independence from British colonisation.

Adenan made the announcement during the grand finale of the "Sejiwa, Senada" (One Soul, One Harmony) programme.

The decision, he said, was made to recognise and acknowledge the sacrifice and contributions of the state's ancestors who had fought for Sarawak's independence from the British.

Watak ‘Abang Long Fadhil’ yang dilakonkan oleh Zizan Razak memang wujud sebenarnya. Inilah dia wajah di sebalik Abang Long Fadzil yang sebenar, bekas gangster Singapore yang telah bertaubat dan menerima hidayah dari Allah. Mungkin tiada kena mengena dengan filem Zizan itu, cuma nama sahaja kebetulan sama.

Melalui perkongsian video selama 50 minit di Facebook, Abang Long Fadzil bercerita tentang masa silamnya dan bagaimana beliau terbuka hati ingin kembali kepada Allah. Jadi kalau anda belum ada masa untuk tonton video penuh ceramah Abang Long Fadzil, anda boleh teruskan membaca sinopsis kisah Abang Long Fadzil di bawah.

Abang Long Fadzil adalah anak pertama dari tiga orang adik beradik. Menurut beliau, beliau terjebak ke dalam kancah gangster adalah disebabkan dari pengaruh keluarga beliau sendiri. Beliau masih ingat pesan arwah nenek beliau di mana sebagai anak lelaki sulung, tanggungjawab beliau sangat besar kerana beliau adalah bakal ketua keluarga dan bertanggungjawab untuk keselamatan keluarganya.

Beliau sangat nakal dan liar sejak dari usia remaja. Beliau masuk penjara pertama kali pada umur 12 tahun kerana memukul budak yang dua tahun lebih tua darinya dengan kayu dalam satu pergaduhan. Beliau tidak menyalahkan rakan sebaya atau pengaruh luar yang menyebabkan beliau terjebak dengan gangster. Tetapi beliau mengaku keluarga atau pakcik beliau yang mengajar Fadzil menjadi jahat. Bapa-bapa saudara Fadzil lah yang mengajar Fadzil untuk berkawan dengan kaum Cina di Singapura dan justeru itu, beliau terjerumus dengan gangsterism.

Beliau mula mencacah tattoo dibadannya sejak usianya 12 tahun. Tattoo pertamanya adalah namanya sendiri, Fadzil. Lama kelamaan tattoo beliau makin bertambah di seluruh bahagian tangan kiri (umur 14-15 tahun), di bahagian belakang badan dan di leher dan muka (usia 20-22 tahun). Menurut beliau, ketika itu beliau tidak perlu membayar untuk servis tattoo berkenaan sebab rakan-rakan yang tolong lukis. Beliau memberitahu kawasan paling sakit untuk dilukis tattoo adalah di bahagian dahi dan leher kerana kawasan tersebut paling sensitif.

Fadzil kemudiannya bercerita tentang kehidupan ketika zaman gangsternya. Beliau jujur berkata arak dan makan babi itu perkara biasa dalam hidupnya dan babi itu antara makanan paling sedap yang beliau pernah makan. Beliau juga selalu turut serta dalam pergaduhan antara geng gangster di Singapura. Ada satu ketika, beliau terpaksa berdepan dengan 8 orang gangster dalam satu masa kerana dua rakan beliau lari kerana takut. Memang ketika itu beliau kena pukul teruk; telinga pekak sebelah, luka besar di belakang badan dan luka di muka. Doktor ketika itu berkata kepada Fadzil yang kalau beliau lambat 5 minit sahaja ke hospital, beliau pasti akan mati kerana luka pergaduhan itu.

Penghijrahan beliau bermula sedikit demi sedikit. Beliau mula meninggalkan babi dan arak kerana timbul rasa geli dengan kedua-dua benda haram itu. Selepas meninggalkan arak dan babi, beliau mula kuat hisap dadah (Syabu). Beliau pelik kerana ketika beliau sedang high kerana syabu, beliau boleh baca doa dan solat. Tapi kalau tidak hisap syabu, langsung lupa tentang doa dan solat. Dan ketika itu beliau tinggalkan syabu.

Titik permulaan yang betul-betul buat Abang Long Fadzil mahu berhijrah adalah melalui mimpi. Dalam mimpi itu, beliau sedang berada di tepi pantai bersama rakan-rakan menikmati arak. Tiba-tiba satu ombak yang sangat besar menuju ke arah mereka. Fadzil ketika itu memang tahu itulah hari kiamat kerana beliau rasa ianya sangat real. Ketika beliau ingin berlari, rakan-rakan beliau semuanya hilang dan ombak pun sudah tiada dan beliau tiba-tiba berseorangan di tepi laut. Selepas bangun dari mimpi itu, Fadzil tidak keluar rumah selamat sebulan kerana takut mati.

Sebulan selepas mimpi itu, ada rakan yang datang menemui Fadzil dan mengajaknya pergi ke masjid. Dan ketika itu beliau terdetik, kalau duduk di rumah pun boleh mati, kalau keluar pun boleh mati. Jadi beliau nekad untuk keluar dari rumah. Permulaannya beliau keluar 3 hari untuk kembali mengenal Allah tetapi tepat hari ke-40, baru beliau yakin kembali kepada Allah.

Fadzil bercerita perjalanan untuk berubah itu sangat susah baginya. Beliau mengaku yang beliau ambik masa 8 bulan untuk menghafal surah Al- Fatihah. Beliau sangat bersyukur kepada Allah kerana memberi peluang kedua untuk beliau bertaubat. Beliau sangat terharu kerana walaupun di waktu jahil beliau dahulu seringkali beliau mengeji Allah, Allah tetap memberi beliau peluang kedua untuk beliau kembali ke pangkal jalan.

“Saya dah biasa kena hina dengan orang sekeliling, dengan ustaz. Kena sound cakap tattoo tak kena air, tak sah solat. Tapi saya pegang cakap mak. Kalau orang susah minta tolong, tolong selagi boleh, kalau orang minta sedekah, kasi selagi mampu,” kata Fadzil.

Bila ditanya tentang rakan-rakan lama beliau, rata-rata kawan gangster Cina beliau menerima penghijrahan Fadzil dengan baik. Tiada yang mengeji tapi siap beri full morale support. Tapi tidak bagi kawan Melayu Fadzil. Kebanyakkan kata Fadzil poyo dan hanya nak publisiti murahan dengan penghijrahan ini walaupun tahu Fadzil telah berhijrah dan sudah cuci tangan dari kancah gangster.

“Saya banyak kawan Cina. Saya selesa kawan dengan Cina. Cina baik sebab orang Cina akan tolong kawan-kawan yang susah. Saya tak suka Melayu sebab Melayu ini pendengki dan suka hina orang. Kalau nak tolong orang, orang Melayu akan tengok wallet dulu,” tambah Fadzil. Menurut beliau, kawan ni ada bila kita ada duit sahaja. Kalau tak ada duit, kawan pun hilang entah ke mana.

Dengan imej terbaru Abang Long Fadzil sekarang, polis sudah jarang tahan beliau dan soal siasat beliau. Kalau dahulu, beliaulah orang pertama yang kena petik kalau ada kes polis. Beliau bersyukur kerana pada usia 29 tahun, beliau dah kenal mana kawan, mana lawan. Beliau menambah kalau kaum Cina, kalau isu duit, mereka akan tolong. Kalau Melayu, nampak duit mereka makan dulu. Itulah perbezaan antara kawan Cina dan kawan Melayu beliau. Bukan semua tapi majoriti kawan Melayu beliau begitu.

Bercerita tentang perasaan mendapat hidayah dari Allah, Fadzil berkata kemanisan tu tak dapat digambarkan.

“Kemanisan dari Allah ni lain. Kalau manis minum kopi ni, hari-hari kita minum kopi lama-lama kena potong kaki. Manis Allah ni dalam hati. Tak dapat saya nak gambarkan macam mana,” kata Fadzil.

Di akhir temubual bersama Fadzil, beliau berpesan kepada semua supaya jangan cepat judge orang lain. Jangan menghukum orang lain umpama kita inilah yang paling baik antara semua. Kerana tugas menghukum itu adalah tugas Allah dan bukan manusia. Yang terbaik adalah membimbing mereka ke jalan yang benar dari kita terus menghukum mereka itu.

Banyak pengajaran yang boleh diambil dari temubual Abang Long Fadzil ini. Hidayah itu milik Allah dan gangster besar seperti Fadzil pun mampu berubah selepas mendapat Hidayah. therefore i think maybe DAP sarawak chong can fikir fikir cerai with DAP Melaya, set up a new DAP, namanya DAP sarawak with a new logo. i no objection chong be the first president, and violet be vice president. i oso like to suggest the following logo for DAP Sarawak.

Once DAP sarawak with new logo can cut tie with dap melaya, dap sarawak can no longer be accuse is a MELAYA party anymore. DAP SARAWAK can yell kuat kuat it can fight for sarawak autonomy, protect sarawakian right and Be-eNd cannot bad mouth DAP SARAWAK

My Melaya kolik complaint tat sarawak BN gorment unfair becoz separate state election and general election.

UNFAIR because:
1) separate the election to songlap $$$
2) separate election waste $$$ coz bijaN go sarawak need to give $$$ to tis and tat. Sarawak dapat $$$ every 2~3 yrs where as Malaya state only dapat $$$ once every 5 yrs.
3) use state election to switch focus. Now whole Malaya switch focus sarawak election and nobody cares 1mdb, fuel naik/ turun harga, gst...

Since DAP, PKR, PAS dapat negeri, y don't their DUN approve to hold state election separate from GE? i m sure the state can get a lot $$$ from bijaN.

Uni Msia Sabah cancels Muslim talk

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and SIDMA college distanced themselves today from a talk tonight featuring a Muslim scholar alleged to be a former Christian priest from a German church.

In a brief conversation this morning, SIDMA College chairman Prof Morni Kambrie told Malay Mail Online that alleged ex-Episcopal priest Ustaz Ayub Abdul Rahman’s event scheduled at the college’s Sabah campus has been cancelled.

“It’s not happening,” Morni said. “I don’t see any more rationale to expand on this issue”.

A flyer on the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department's (Jheains) Facebook page had named SIDMA College, Sabah, as the venue for Ayub's talk titled “Perjalanan Hijrah & Dakwah Catatan Kehidupan” (Records of a journey of migration and Islamic missions).

In the flyer on an April 12 Facebook post on Ayub’s talk tonight, he was described as a former priest at the Church of St Augustine of Canterbury at “Frankfurter” in Germany and the 2005 recipient of the Maal Hijrah Personality award for Sarawak in the category of new Muslim converts.

The Episcopal church in Wiesbaden, Germany, told Malay Mail Online that Ayub had never served as a priest nor held any official functions there.

The flyer on the Jheains Facebook post also claimed that UMS was one of the organisers of Ayub’s talk, but the public university said it was a “misunderstanding”.

“This event is not organised by UMS and not allowed in campus,” UMS’s deputy vice-chancellor Assoc Prof Dr Ismail Ali told Malay Mail Online yesterday.

He added that UMS does not recognise Ayub and always conducts background checks on speakers before inviting them to the university.

He explained that the university does not permit religious events to be held within its campus, and only allows cultural events such as Chinese festivals and the Harvest festival to be held there.

A flyer advertising the Sabah event titled 'Perjalanan Hijrah & Dakwah — Catatan Kehidupan' was posted on April 12 on the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department’s (Jheains) Facebook account.

UMS also distanced itself from endorsing Ayub in a brief post on its official Facebook page late last night following Malay Mail Online’s inquiry, clarifying that it was only providing the venue for a separate talk titled “Ibrah Al-Quran untuk Wanita” featuring independent Muslim preacher Dr Ruziah Gahzali.

“UMS is not involved in the organising or the provision of venue for Ustaz Ayub’s talk,” said UMS.

“The confusion arose because the UMS logo was placed on the promotional materials @publicity, when UMS is only the venue for Dr Ruziah’s talk,” the university added, attaching the flyer featuring UMS’s mosque as the venue and UMS as one of the organisers for Ruziah’s event.

A check of the Facebook page of Institut Pengajian al-Quran (IPaQ) — one of the listed organisers —showed that it had posted on April 19 a similar poster about Ayub’s talk.

This version however did not feature UMS’s logo under the organiser heading and also did not mention Ayub’s alleged ex-priest position.

Ayub’s talk is part of a series of events in conjunction with Sabah’s first-ever “Mahrajan Ilmu Al-Quran Sabah 2016” organised by IPaQ that runs from today onwards and ends tomorrow, according to the institute’s Facebook post.

The institute this morning removed the Facebook post, which had also named the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (Maiwp), Jheains, the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (Jakim) Sabah branch as co-organisers for the “Mahrajan Ilmu Al-Quran Sabah 2016” convention.

The institute’s Facebook page describes itself as a non-governmental organisation and a foundation based at Petaling Jaya’s Masjid Tun Abdul Aziz, also stating that it conducts programmes covering the appreciation and application of knowledge from the Muslim holy book, al-Quran.

Malay Mail Online was not able to immediately obtain clarification from those listed as the organisers of Ayub’s talk, which is advertised as free and open to the public.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — The concept of an Islamic statehood is a relatively recent creation and was never mentioned in the Quran, Turkish-born scholar Mustafa Akyol said today.

An advocate of political secularism, the journalist who has been a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times told an open forum on Islam here that Islamic statehood is man-made and not divine inspiration as some clerics have suggested.

He cited from Islam’s golden period during the Ottoman empire to support his argument.

“The sultanate did not come from the Quran. The republic did not come from the Quran,” he said, the latter referring to present-day Iran. “These are modern ideas.”

“There seems to be a lot of confusion because God did not define the Islamic state in the Quran. There was no such thing,” Mustafa told a forum organised by local Muslim group Islamic Renaissance Front.

Mustafa said that only political values, rights, security issues were discussed in Islam's holy book, adding that Muslim leaders after Prophet Muhammad had created political structures based on these values.

But, he emphasised, they were never declared as Islamic states.

Malaysia's Islamist opposition party PAS supports the idea of an Islamic statehood.

Its leaders have repeatedly stated that the party remains committed in making multiracial Malaysia an Islamic state despite widespread criticism from both Muslims and non-Muslims.

PAS is also keen to enforce the strict and controversial Shariah penal code in Kelantan despite opposition, claiming Islam ordains the implementation of hudud although many religious scholars have rebutted the argument.

Without referring to PAS, Mustafa said historical evidence shows those who propound the Islamic state concept often do so with one political motive in mind: control.

He said Islam’s intellectuals need genuine reform, claiming much of the religion’s interpretation today is done selectively by those aiming to perpetuate dominance.

Mustafa pointed to the present anti-pluralism movement throughout the Islamic world as evidence.

“I agree that we need reform… we can see that certain interpretations are favoured over the other for dominance,” he said.

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 11 — A week after its launch, the government’s early morning congregational prayer programme for Muslim students has drawn lukewarm interest despite an incentive of lucky draw prizes.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor admitted that the programme’s implementation for the dawn prayer that is known to be challenging for Muslims to adhere to, was not well received.

He said there will be a study conducted to identify the reason for the lack of participation from students for the congregational prayer that takes place around 5.45am on school days.

“The reception has been discouraging. The programme began last week, so I am here today to observe.

“We will think of ways to attract more students,” he said when contacted by Malay Mail Online this morning.

Tengku Adnan, popularly known as Ku Nan, had this morning performed his subuh prayers with the congregation at the surau Putra Al-Amin in Putrajaya’s Precinct 8 with the attendance of 30 students.

According to the flier issued by local council Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj), aside from that mosque, several other mosques are also part of the programme, including Ar-Rahman, Al-Furqan, Al-Muhajirin among others.

Malay Mail Online had this morning visited the Al-Mizan mosque and found only five students had turned up for the prayer session.

Fifth Former Muhammad Syafiq Azmi said a lucky draw was held last week as well to get Putrajaya residents interested in attending the congregational prayers.

He said attendees at the Putra Al-Amin mosque were asked to fill up an attendance sheet in the morning during the subuh prayers, and the lucky draw was then conducted in the evening during evening Maghrib prayers.

“There was a 32-inch TV. They are giving out five prizes a day from Monday to Sunday.

“It is being held in conjunction with Minggu Usrah Jemaah, to get more people participating in subuh congregational prayers,” said Muhammad Syafiq, who won an ironing set.

When asked if he would stop attending congregational subuh prayers after the lucky draw programme ended, the school prefect said; “I will continue going, after a week of attending prayers, I have gotten used to it.”

Tengku Adnan was asked if perhaps an officiation ceremony could create more interest for the programme.

“There is no need for an officiation ceremony. Everyone know subuh prayers,” the Putrajaya MP said.

Last November, Tengku Adnan said that there would be prayer programmes and subuh lectures for school-going children at the mosques in his constituency before the start of the school year.

He had said that the programmes would be conducted to encourage students to perform congregational prayers before beginning their daily activities.

Tangku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general had also reportedly said that the programme will involve students from 14 schools in Putrajaya and would be expanded to Kuala Lumpur should the programme receive a positive response.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 ― The Muslim Chicken sells poultry, but no, the chickens are not followers of Islam ― they are slaughtered in a halal method by Malay-Muslims in a business run by Malay-Muslims.

The fact that Malay-Muslims are running the company based in Bandar Baru Bangi imports more significance to the halal label attached to The Muslim Chicken poultry, as opposed to businesses owned by non-Muslims who may not fully understand the halal method of animal slaughter, even if they employ Muslims to do the killing, the company’s director Irwan Kashmir said.

“The Muslim Chicken doesn’t mean that the chickens enter Islam, but it’s specially for Muslims who place importance on halal,” Irwan told Malay Mail Online in a recent phone interview.

Halal, which is Arabic for permissible in Islamic law, is big business in Malaysia, with the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) reported saying last August that its export expanded to RM38 billion in 2014 from RM32 billion the previous year, exceeding the RM19 billion target for 2020.

Various businesses in Malaysia are keen to adopt the halal tag, from bottled mineral water to trains. Among the most recent is a local airline that is marketing itself as Shariah-compliant.

Irwan said the more accurate name for the year-old The Muslim Chicken should be The Muslims’ Chicken, but the company decided against using the latter to avoid accusations of racism.

Besides, The Muslim Chicken poultry, which are sourced from Malacca, are sold to everyone regardless of their faith, Irwan said, noting that some of the company’s customers are Chinese traders.

“Let’s say a Mr Chong says: ‘Yes, my chicken is halal because I bring in slaughterers from Pakistan and Indonesia’, so we assume the chicken is halal. But Mr Chong himself is not a Muslim.

“The boss won’t know whether his workers follow [the halal method] or not, or whether it’s done wrongly; only Muslims will know,” said Irwan.

According to him, all of The Muslim Chicken’s managers are Malay-Muslims. There are seven staff in the company and 20 factory workers.

He said the halal method of slaughtering poultry was to cut the animal’s throat with a sharp knife in a single swipe. The Muslim Chicken is against electronic stunning, which would make the animal unconscious but not kill it, before slaughter.

UK paper The Guardian reported in 2014 that some European countries, including Denmark, have banned slaughter without pre-stunning. Campaigners reportedly said an end to slaughter without pre-stunning would mean a stop to unnecessary suffering.

Irwan, however, said the halal method of slaughter was humane.

“Stuns torture the animal. It creates prior tensions. If the animal dies [during the stun] and if we eat it, it’s considered haram,” he said.

According to Irwan, many Muslims in Malaysia are concerned about consuming halal, but they are generally ignorant about how the chickens they purchase are really slaughtered.

“What you want to do is to do the best for Muslims to give them chickens slaughtered by Muslims,” he said.
