Streamyx with Mandriva

Hi. I'm a newbie in Linux here.

[Newbie level: Knows basic commands, just learn about the different installation package formats: tar.gz,

rpm, tar2.gz, etc..]

The problem:
I have a Streamyx account in my home that is shared by three(3) laptops. The connection to the ADSL modem

goes through a switch, where all three laptops are attached to.

I did a fresh installation of Mandriva Linux Spring 2009.1x64_x86 on my laptop (One of the three).
It boots up to the GNOME desktop allright. The problem is I can't connect to the Internet, though. The

Mandriva Network Manager (think 'View Network Connections' in Windows) shows that the NIC interface

(eth0) is up and running, but when tried to browse websites in Mozilla, they took very long time to load

up but finally failed. [I used settings just like in Windows: Obtain IP automatically (meaning uses

DHCP), and Obtain DNS Server automatically]

Error message: Problem loading page. Server not found.

It just a normal error message from the browser, indicating that my connection did not go through.

Next day, brought the laptop to office. As the office network is using proxy, I changed the network

settings of both Mozilla & Mandriva, and it works just fine.
[I just entered the proxy's URL as my office use Automatic proxy]
I was able to browse the web.

I don't think setting up Internet connection differs so much between Windows and Linux, though it's

easier using the former. I suspected somehow the switch got in the way.

What'b been done:
I searched for the possible causes and solutions throughout the net. Find out that it may require PPPoe

client in order to connect through shared Streamyx for Internet browsing (Don't know if this is the

problem, but it sounds logical ). After downloading the appropriate PPPoe client, tried to compile and

install it (of course after facing those tedious dependencies issues ), but to no avail. I searched again

for an rpm installation package rather than tar.gz in www.rpmfind.net, and ran it. Honestly, I don't even

know if the PPPoe client is correctly/succesfully installed. Mandriva did show the installation progress,

but after that is just sit quiet, like nothing ever happens. When checked, the PPPoe client is nowhere to

be found.

If someone has already encountered this problem before, or maybe there were already threads regarding

this problem, or know websites that have guides about this, then I'll be glad if someone can point me to

them. Just not to waste time.

Help with MS Access 2007

Hi. I'm a newbie in using MS Access.

Need some help here with Access 2007.

The Problem:

I have a text file (.txt) that contains lot (really lot) of parameters that are inter-related.
For example, (part taken from the text file):

ID:300, RMCH:345, DDF:254 <--- Line 1
ID:200, RMCH:344, DDF:253 <--- Line 2
...
... (lot of interleaving line of other parameters)
...
RCX1, CCU:7, FFF:33, RMCH:345 <--- Line 1444
RCX2, CCU:7, FFF:33, RMCH:343 <--- Line 1445

I need to create a database (or pop-up window/table) that will display all the lines containing the parameter that we
entered as the search value. For example, if we enter RMCH:345 for searching, the result will display both Line 1, Line 1444 and any other lines
that contain RMCH:345. How will I do this using Access 2007? Do I need to import the .txt file into a blank database first or something else.

What I've done so far

I was able to import the txt.file into Access 2007, separating each parameter by comma (,). But that did not retain the line where they
originally reside. Result: After importing, line 1444's parameters are separated into three separated lines:

RCX1,
CCU:7,
FFF:33
RMCH:345

When I search for RMCH:345, this will obviously impact the result as what I need is the other parameters that reside alongside the RMCH:345
in the original line, which are RCX1, CCU:7 and FFF:33.

Hope the explanation above is clear.
I think of posting this to Microsoft Help as the last resort, but if someone on LYN has the expertise why not try first.

In the meantime, will continue to search help on the net.
