US President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on imported goods, which will greatly affect Apple Inc due to its reliance on factories in China and other nations. These tariffs will reach 34% for China, threatening Apple’s supply chain.

While Apple makes most of its devices in China, the company has manufacturing centres in other countries. This includes Malaysia, where Mac computers are increasingly produced, and will be hit with a 24% tariff. Apple’s other production centres in India, Vietnam, Thailand, and Ireland, will also be affected by tariffs. The company does some manufacturing in its home country, but it is limited. The Mac Pro is produced in Texas, but its parts are imported from other countries.

The new tariffs, which are expected to be in effect starting 9 April, are more likely to affect the company’s profit margins. According to The Edge, Apple is unlikely to increase prices while consumer sentiment is shaky. Additionally, investors have also grown concerned about the new tariffs. Following the announcement, Apple’s shares went down by 7.9% in extended trading.

As most of Apple’s production is conducted outside the US, the company has attempted to get in the president’s good graces to avoid being hit by tariffs. Part of this includes the promise to invest US$500 billion (~RM2.2 trillion) in the US and the production of AI-related servers in Texas. However, it seems that the current US president remains unmoved, if not unfazed by this gesture.

The tariffs could also have more consequences for Apple as it sources components from other countries, which may also be affected by the new tariffs.

PETALING JAYA: Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin passed away this morning, at the age of 86.
Daim’s lawyer Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed his death when contacted. Daim served as finance minister twice, the first stint from 1984 to 1991 under former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration during which he played a key role in managing Malaysia’s economy and implementing structural adjustments.
He later returned for a second term briefly from 1999 to 2001, again under Mahathir, to address economic issues following the Asian financial crisis.

I'm trying to decide between the Macbook Air and the iPad Pro. I mostly use my computer for surfing the web, reading, and basic editing. I already have an iMac and a Macbook, and my office provides a Windows laptop. I'm thinking of buying a laptop, but I'm not sure if I'll use it. I'm comfortable using a large-screen iMac when I work at home. I have an iMac, a MacBook, and an iPad Pro 10.5. I use the iPad a lot more than the other two devices. My iPad Pro 10.5 has a screen problem and needs an estimated RM1k to repair. At the same time, iPadOS no longer supports this device. Given these two issues, I'm considering replacing my iPad Pro 10.5.

Dalam satu kenyataan selepas mengadakan mesyuarat tergempar malam Khamis, Majlis Presiden PH berpendirian bahawa hak dan kuasa melantik seseorang Perdana Menteri terletak di tangan Yang di-Pertuan Agong, seperti yang termaktub di bawah Perkara 40(2)(a) Perlembagaan Persekutuan.

“Umum sedia maklum bahawa Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong dijadualkan bertemu dengan Raja-Raja Melayu untuk membincang perkara ini,” menurut kenyataan itu.

Majlis Presiden juga berpendirian bahawa adalah tidak wajar untuk Perdana Menteri interim Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad mendahului titah Yang di-Pertuan Agong dalam hal ini.

Pada Khamis, Dr Mahathir berkata persidangan khas Dewan Rakyat akan diadakan pada 2 Mac bagi menentukan calon yang mendapat majoriti untuk menjadi perdana menteri baharu.

China sends two flights to bring back Wuhan citizens from Thailand and Malaysia

SHANGHAI: China's aviation authority on Friday dispatched two Xiamen Airlines flights to bring Wuhan citizens home from Bangkok in Thailand and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, it said on its website on Friday.

The charter flights were expected to land back in Wuhan the same day, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced.

There were 117 nationals from Hubei province in Bangkok and 100 in Kota Kinabalu who were "willing to take the chartered flights back to Wuhan as soon as possible", the CAAC announcement said.

"The charter flights adopt the principle of voluntary ticket purchase," the CAAC added.

China's foreign affairs ministry said earlier on Friday that the country would bring Wuhan residents back from overseas "as soon as possible" due to the "the practical difficulties that Chinese citizens from Hubei, especially Wuhan, have faced overseas".

Chinese No Longer Welcome as Coronavirus Fear Grips World

(Jan 30): Airlines halt flights from China. Schools in Europe uninvite exchange students. Restaurants in South Korea turn away Chinese customers.

As a deadly virus spreads beyond China, governments, businesses and educational institutions are struggling to find the right response.

Safeguarding public health is a priority. How to do that without stigmatizing the entire population of the country where the outbreak began is the challenge.

With the death toll reaching 170 and the roster of cases climbing above 7,700, worries are growing. Many global companies with operations in China have asked workers to stay home. Airlines are curtailing flights to the nation. Several countries have begun evacuating citizens from the most stricken zone around the city of Wuhan.

Though the vast majority of cases involve people from the central Chinese metropolis or nearby cities, or those who have been in contact with them, people of Asian appearance around the world say they’ve been subject to increased wariness since the disease began spreading. In some cases, baser emotions have come to the fore.

In South Korea, signs have begun popping up on restaurant windows saying, “no Chinese allowed.” A Korean casino catering to foreign visitors said it’s no longer accepting groups of tourists from China. More than half a million people signed a petition, submitted to the government, calling for a ban on visitors from the nearby country of 1.4 billion.

A Chinese woman visiting the Japanese city of Ito -- on a peninsula south of Tokyo -- said that a server at a restaurant shouted “Chinese! Out!” at her, according to a recording shared on a Weibo account.[COLOR=red]

The recording, which included a subsequent phone call to the unnamed eatery, was shared by a reporter from Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV.

A woman who answered the phone at the restaurant said it was refusing customers from China and Southeast Asia because the owner was worried about the coronavirus, according to the recording. “If our owner contracts the virus and dies, whose responsibility is it then?” she said.

Health concerns aside, the reaction in South Korea and Japan to the virus reflects longstanding friction with China, as well as resentment over its growing influence in the region. That’s even as an influx of visitors from China has boosted neighboring economies, including South Korea, where tourists surged by a quarter to more than 5.5 million through November from the previous year.

Signs of insensitivity aren’t limited to Asia. French regional newspaper Courrier Picard sparked outrage with its headline “Yellow Alert” on a front-page story about the coronavirus. The paper apologized to readers who took to Twitter to condemn the allusion to “Yellow Peril,” a xenophobic term referring to the peoples of East Asia that dates to the 19th century.

In Denmark, the Chinese Embassy called on the country’s Jyllands-Posten newspaper to apologize for an editorial cartoon that depicts China’s flag with virus symbols instead of stars on a red background.

“We feel angry and we feel sad because it’s a kind of insult to our people and to our flag,” John Liu, Secretary General at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Denmark, said in a television interview.

The paper declined to apologize, citing Denmark’s tradition of freedom of speech.

Those of Chinese descent, but not from China, have also been met with harsh reactions. In Sri Lanka, a group of tourists from Singapore -- a Southeast Asian country where the majority of people are of Chinese descent -- were barred from climbing local attraction Ella Rock because of their appearance, according to Tucker Chang, 66, one of the tourists. No one in the group had a history of recent travel to China.[COLOR=red]

Student Visits

In France, the ministry of foreign affairs advised schools and universities to postpone student exchanges with China. At least one high school in Paris withdrew invitations to a group of students set to arrive this week.

In Canada, parents in communities north of Toronto started a petition urging schools to force students who recently returned from China to stay home for at least 17 days to avoid any chance of spreading the disease. The petition has garnered almost 10,000 signatures in the area, which has large ethnic-Chinese and Asian populations.

In response, York school board chair Juanita Nathan and education director Louise Sirisko have written to parents advising them that such requests run the risk of “demonstrating bias and racism,” even when made in the name of safety.

“What we’re really trying to get at is to [make sure] this situation is not giving rise to any inadvertent racism,” Nathan told CBC Radio’s Metro Morning. “I think the parents may be overly cautious and very anxious.”

Media Prima’s shares close at five-month low after lay-off rumours

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Media conglomerate Media Prima Bhd’s shares fell to 35 sen per unit at market closing today, amid rumours of a new round of downsizing earlier today.

The share price is its lowest since June this year.

By comparison, it had opened at 36.5 sen per unit earlier today.

Media Prima’s shares have not risen above the 40 sen per unit threshold since mid-October, despite hovering near the 48 sen per unit mark between July and early last month.

The price of its shares fell in mid-October after an announcement on October 9 that Aurora Mulia Sdn Bhd, linked to tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary, had gained close to one-third of its stake.

Earlier today, financial paper The Edge reported that a meeting among heads of departments was called this afternoon to discuss the outcome of a board of director's meeting earlier this morning.

Malay Mail understands the meeting is still ongoing and staff members have not been informed of its decision.

It is rumoured that the company will axe as much as one-third of its workforce.

Last year, its subsidiary and TV3 station operator, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd, retrenched 190 employees by giving them three months' notice, while mutual separation schemes were offered to 43 others.

In the second quarter of the year, Media Prima posted a net loss of RM8.83 million, as traditional revenue segments, including publishing and television networks, have seen lowered contributions.

It has seen a string of quarterly losses since the third quarter of 2016, with the exception of the fourth quarter of that year, and the second and fourth quarter of 2018.

Media Prima owns the New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad, with the newspapers New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro under it, as well as four television channels, TV3, NTV7, 8TV and TV9.

Initially having only arrived for iPhone, BlackBerry has now gone ahead and updated their BBM chat app to include support for the iPad and iPod Touch, though it's not real iPad support. The late arrival of the app on iOS doesn't seem to of have hampered its efforts though as BlackBerry has stated the app was downloaded over 10 million times in 24 hours between iOS and Android.

Although I'm still trying to figure out why folks would want to run the app on a device that possibly isn't always connected to the internet, it was one of the larger complaints when the app became available on the iTunes App Store so, it's nice to see BlackBerry actually address it and make the change for those who do want to run it. Other changes to the app have also come along for the ride:
•Improvements to right-to-left language support
•More options for sharing your BBM PIN Barcode
•Find your friends on other social networks who are also using BBM
•Fixes an issue where some users would be missing BBM contact names
