A man who was at an illegal cockfight in central California died after being stabbed in the leg by a bird which had a knife attached to its leg, officials said.

José Luis Ochoa, 35, of Lamont, California, was declared dead at a hospital about two hours after he was injured in nearby Tulare County on 30 January, the Kern County coroner said.

A postmortem concluded Ochoa died of an accidental "sharp force injury" to his right calf. Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said it was unclear if a delay in seeking medical attention contributed to his death.

"I have never seen this type of incident," Sgt Martin King, a 24-year veteran of the sheriff's department, told the Bakersfield Californian newspaper.

Ochoa and the other spectators fled when police arrived at the fight, King told the newspaper. Deputies found five dead roosters and other evidence of cockfighting, he said. No arrests were made.

Cockfighting is illegal in the United States. Specially bred roosters are put into a ring and encouraged to fight until one is incapacitated or killed, while spectators gamble on the outcome.

According to court records, Ochoa paid $370 (£230) in fines last year after pleading no contest to one count of owning or training an animal for fighting, according to the newspaper.

Attending or organising a cockfight, or training an animal to participate in one, are all misdemeanours under Californian law, although a second offence is a felony.

Lithuanian Firm Plans All-Blonde Resort

It will be a case of the blondes leading the blondes when a Lithuanian company sets up a holiday resort in the Maldives run entirely by, yes, blondes -- right down to the pilots who fly you in.

The BBC reported Friday that the blonde island, planned to open in 2015, is only the latest in what it described as ¿a growing blonde movement in the Baltics.¿

The resort will be set up by the Lithuanian company Olialia -- pronounced ¿ooh-la-la¿ and run and staffed by blonde women , the BBC said. It will employ only blonde staff, right down to the crews on the airplanes that fly in holiday goers to the island nation in the Indian Ocean.

But the roots of some potential problems were already beginning to poke through.

For openers, the BBC said, there were suggestions it could be seen as discriminatory by potentially excluding non-white Maldivian staff while local laws require resorts to hire at least 50 percent local staff. In Lithuania, a member of the EU, there are questions about whether a blonde-only hiring policy would violate EU employment laws.

Olialia's blonde managing director, Giedre Pukiene, said her company does not discriminate and welcomes all applicants, no matter what their gender, age, ethnicity or hair color, the BBC said.

"But we find that when women with dark hair work here, they are surrounded by all these beautiful blondes, so eventually they end up going blonde too," she added.

As evidence of the burgeoning Baltic blonde movement, the BBC cited a a two-day blonde festival held in the Latvian capital of Riga last May that included a march of blonde women through the city and a blonde concert that apparently was so compelling a young man felt it necessary to strip off his clothes. He was detained by police.
