EPF Dividend 5.65% for 2009

EPF Declares 5.65 Per Cent Dividend Rate For 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 (Bernama) -- The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has declared a dividend rate of 5.65 per cent for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009, up 115 basis points over the 4.50 per cent paid out for 2008. The dividend rate was declared on the back of the highest ever net income achieved of RM19.63 billion, increasing 34.82 per cent from RM14.56 billion recorded in the previous year.

"2009 was a significant year for the EPF as it rode out the impact of the global financial crisis. While the EPF continues to be challenged by the fragile economic environment, our investment nonetheless delivered a sound performance for the year," chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said in a statement on Friday. During the year under review, 72.53 per cent of the total investment were devoted to fixed income instruments in line with EPF's prudent approach, while 27.05 per cent was in equities and the remainder in property.

As at Dec 31, 2009, EPF's investment portfolio grew 8.55 per cent or RM29.25 billion to RM371.26 billion from RM342.01 billion in 2008. On prospects for 2010, Samsudin said: "Baring any unforeseen circumstances, prospects for 2010 are greatly dependent on the economic performance of the country and internationally." He said globally, financial markets continued to be volatile and this might have an impact on the price performance of EPF's investments and future income.

"We will continue to focus on our key goals of preserving the capital of our contributors and ensuring a satisfactory real rate of return," he added.

-- BERNAMA

What is your investment strategy in 2010?

I have browse thru the latest issues of Personal Money, the question of the month is " What is your investment strategy for year 2010?"

Here are some of the points that i perosnally would like to highlight, you are freely to give your views:-

a) Equity - The recent Dubai Debt Crisis reveals that the government fiscal policy maynot works as the way they planned, Dubai bubble is burst now. Will that be another round of economy crisis that affect world emerging market stock performance??? Stock Index has been dropping for the last few days due to the Dubai crisis. Emerging Market Equity have to date improved by 40%-60% compared to early this year. Will there be any room to grow in year 2010?

b) Bond - High Yield Fund, Emerging Market Bonds returns are at their all time high now, thanks to the "near to zero" low interest rate in most of the economy. Will this government backed bonds/debt at higher risk now as more than 50% of the bond issued are in USD denomination whilst US is printing money in the faster pace now than b4? Bond is still the safe heaven for investors?

c) Forex - USD is keep on depreciating....so which currency is worth to keep in 2010 or in long term?

d) Commodity - Gold is at its all time height, Oil is now double up compare to the Year lowest level of USD35/barrel. Is commidity still a good tool to hedge against the inflation?

e) FD / PNB products/ money market funds - CASH is King???? PNB Products and money market fund is as good as cash as they are liquid and can redeem anytime, but the return is comparatively low. Will it still your preferred form of investment in 2010?

f) Real Estate - There are > 50 new properties launching since June 09, after the world economy show the sign of recovery. The property price in Penang/ Klang Valley also have gone up a lot compare to 2-3 years b4. Coupled with the increase of bank borrowing rate started from 1 Jan 2010, and reimpose of Goverment Property Gain Tax of 5%, will it be still viable to invest in property in 2010?

Feel free to discuss

Why majority Phd & MBA holders are salary earners?

I have read a magazine recently and came accross the above topic, and would like to know the feedback from all Low yat forumers about this topic.
a few key points:-

a) majority of the Phd in biz study or MBA degree holder ended up in teaching jobs or a consultants to many big/medium firms instead of becoming a successful businessman/entreprenuer.
b)Warren Buffet said: business is mostly about what you have in the guts, not what you about the knowledge in the brain, is that true?
c) Bill Gates did not finish his bachelor degree and becoming the richest man in the world. Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook, with usd 2billion networth, just finished his bachelor study, did not attend any postgraduate degree.
d) looking at our top 10 richest men in Malaysia or any South east asian countries, how many of them finished the secondary school or finished the 1st degree?

Open for discussion.....all kind of ideas are appreciated.

Where to invest if u have 1 million dollar

When being asked on where to invest if he has 1 million dollar, Jim Roger's answer is:

a) On Commodity
"Cotton, coffee, silver, these are things that are very depressed. This is where I would start looking … if I only had a million dollars… I wish I had a million dollars, then I would head out and look for those things."

When asked about GOLD outlook, he said: "I own some gold and I am optimistic about the price of gold but I don’t think I would buy it now either. The gold is near its all-time high, I think I would rather buy silver for instance if I had to buy a precious metal. However, I am not buying either at the moment. I certainly would not sell any precious metals — if they go down, I plan to buy more and maybe a lot more."

b) On Emerging Market
"I wouldn’t buy any of them. I would never buy the Russian market. The BRIC is some kind of an artificial thing, which some marketing people put together. I would not ever buy the Russian market. I own China. Brazil is a natural resource-based economy and it is being better managed these days and it has been in the past. So Brazil probably has a good future though I don’t own any Brazilian stocks. The Indian stock market has run up a lot in the last year or so. So I don’t think I would buy it either. I am not buying shares anywhere in the world as we speak."

"The Chinese market doubled between the fall of last year and August of this year. So it was one of the strongest markets in the world, if not the strongest. It has calmed down in the last month or two but anything that doubles in ten months should slow down and consolidate. Who knows where it is going to go from here but I own Chinese shares, I have not sold any of my Chinese shares because longer-term I am very optimistic about China.

c) USD or other currency?
"I am not optimistic about the US dollar long-term. In fact, the US dollar long-term is going to be a disaster. However, there are many people in the world right now who are terribly pessimistic about the dollar including me, many people have sold the dollar short, and so it would not surprise me if there were not a big rally. If a rally comes, I plan to sell that rally but I am not selling the dollar down here.
I own the yen so I am very pleased to see the yen going higher. Various things are happening in Tokyo and Japan. They are the second largest creditor nation in the world plus their government has given big incentives for people to bring the yen back into Japan. Billions of yen have been invested outside of Japan and now there is good reason for them to bring it back.

WHat is your opinion on this interview between JR and CNBC???
